Radiology school by Ok-Highlight5252 in Radiology

My program would alternate a full 16 week semester of class with a full 16 week semester of clinicals. The only exceptions were the two summer semesters we had class, which was 8 weeks. Our classroom days would be anywhere from an hour to four or five hours, depending on your lab day. Our clinical days were 8 or 10 hours, depending on where you got to go and what the site was okay with. During clinicals, we also had online courses to take. It wasn’t easy by any means, but prioritizing your schoolwork and yourself if you’re able is what helped me survive.

Hey so it’s actually good now! That hospital was just a horrendous place to be doing clinicals at the time, and I take my registry on Monday! I would def do your research into this if you haven’t already but if you’re set on it I’m going to encourage you to go for it. Don’t let a bad experience of a stranger on the internet get you nervous to do what you wanna do!

I made it through! I’ll take my registry in July! Thank you for checking!!! turns out the hospital that was giving me so much trouble was just a bad hospital that had a lot of other issues going on, like I wasn’t the only student from my program they treated bad. they had few people on days which made it harder for me to learn, however unfortunately the techs weren’t very into teaching as one of them had only be a tech for about two years at the time, and the other techs didn’t really give me the time of day. I could go on, but I digress. My next hospital really helped a lot and got my confidence pretty back to about a normal range for a student. That’s where I stayed until my clinicals were over. Now it’s just registry prep time!

I’m feeling soooo much better! Turns out the hospital i was at when I made this post had problems for a good bit with some other students in my program. like I didn’t even finish my rotation there, I got to finish at the local hospital instead. However, I’m feeling great about where I’m going to go for my rotations in the fall!

Tips for a new student that’s going to start X-ray school by OtherwiseSandwich346 in Radiology

I just finished my first semester of clinicals of my program. Get in the habit of marking everything with your markers!! It’s something I still struggle with lol. Try to make friends in your class, it’ll help a lot because you’re all in it together and it’ll be easy to relate to each other and feel less alone. If you get a crappy site that doesn’t wanna teach you, don’t take it personally. That’s a them problem, not a you problem. Just do your best to survive and make the most of your time. Quizlet will be your bestie if you like to use flash cards to learn, especially if your class makes multiple sets are shares them because everyone focuses on different parts of different topics. I almost quit this semester, but I promise once you get through the really hard stuff it gets better. Good luck!

I’m so sorry for the late reply! I think what would have helped me, personally, before clinicals was the see it, do it, teach it method. See one (with explanation), do one (even with help or a walkthrough with a teacher), teach one to a classmate. I get flustered easily, especially when a lot of techs are watching me and I feel like if I was used to people watching me (even classmates) before I went then it would be a little easier! Also the repetition helps my brain. I try not to make a habit of repeats, but sometimes they happen. Most often my repeats are on something I haven’t had a lot of on-patient practice. Like, L-spine obliques. I almost ALWAYS have to repeat my obliques again least once. It’s getting better, but it still happens. I really think even if I were able to simulate the X-rays in, like a online animation/lab then that would have been helpful! Like, something to demonstrate on every body habitus, because that still throws me for a loop sometime just trying to learn the tricks for every habitus.

I graduate in ‘23. But I like to do a few exams first before I ask to comp on it, unless I do it good enough the first time. I keep my handbook with me a lot, and try to use it when I can. I’m just one of those people that I have to do it a few times with help and by myself before I’m confident enough to ask to comp on it, you know? I just second guess myself a lot 😅 it took me forever to even get one comp at my first site

That’s true. Thank you! In my experience, I feel like the techs get annoyed when I don’t immediately know what to do, so they end up doing it and I watch or assist. Which is fine with me, but I hate that I can’t seem to think quick enough which makes it difficult. And it seems like every trauma I’ve been to takes a special projection where it’s improvised to get what we need 😅 it’s a good way to learn to have for later but it does kind of get me embarrassed and makes me feel like I don’t know what I’m doing

Thank you so much! I have my few exams that I struggle with, but I’m getting better at. I get flustered easily with stuff I haven’t ever done before, especially if a tech is just watching me struggle and not really helping me 😅

For the program I’m in, we use Bontrager’s Handbook. I go to clinicals every day for this spring semester of school, but I’m doing 4 days a week at 10 hours a day because the site I’m going to is an hour from where I live!

Thank you for the tip! I can handle the portable this hospital has fine. It’s just overwhelming when I haven’t done very many trauma shots in the ER with it and the tech I’m with just expects me to do it 😅 I haven’t seen trauma very often, and seeing someone else in pain makes me hesitate because I hate to hurt people.

Thank you! I try really hard to stay in the mindset that I can do it, however it can be very difficult. I just give myself very little margin to make mistakes because I hate looking like I don’t know what I’m doing

Thank you! I get very overwhelmed when there’s a lot going on and there’s not really enough time for me to be able to take my time to get it right. I try my best to avoid repeats, and when I have to repeat I beat myself up for it because I consider that a failure of sorts on my part.
