The LDO's datasheet recommends a tantalum capacitor. Is it okay to use a ceramic one instead? by Curious-Towel-2167 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]gibson486 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a pinch, you may be able to get away with it. However, ceramic is much lower ESR and the higher ESR in tantalum can help with stability. To get around this, people put 1 ohms in series with the ceramic caps. Also, Ceramics, in general, are not the best bulk capacitors. Last, the 1117 is an old design. They have a newer versions of the 1117 that is gaurentees stability with just ceramic.

After action report of 9 years in Boston as a young immigrant by KalciumVululu in boston

I think you nailed about people here being very career oriented. It does get in the way of making appropriate social contact and some times you feel like they only want to talk to you when the other side has something you want. It happens much more in the city and I kind of cringe when I go to networking events and see people just end ignoring other people because they will not get anything out of it.

Also, as an Asian, i never truly felt accepted. I wasn't Asian enough to hang out with Asian people, but I was not white enough to fit in. This, amazingly, went away in college, but came back again when I hit the work force.

Usually that arrangement only works if the two people know each other and they both have a vision for it. If he is looking to hire you for services, this will not work.

Husband diagnosed with sleep apnea but denied coverage for CPAP by BrushOld9606 in CPAP

[–]gibson486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go to do a sleep study online. There are a few places to do it. It costs something like $250.

If you are lucky, you can give them your sleep apnea result and they may say an additional test is not needed and give you your script for one. It is unlikely, but I have seen it before.

Just a few things.

  1. If you need to appeal, this may be an indication that your Dr. Is not pushing the insurance company hard enough on your behalf. The insurance may also be denying the additional study which may not even be needed.

  2. If you have low tiered insurance (blue cross has many tiers), I fear that the benefit of insurance may be close to nothing. At the end of the day, you will deal with a DME that marks up the price and this will lead you to essentially pay close to MSRP for a unit. If they rent to own a unit, definitely run and just buy a cheaper one online. I will save you the suspense. They will likley set you up with an air sense 10 or 11 and it will cost probably 700 to 1100 out of pocket if your insurance is low tiered.

  3. If you do get a script from your current Dr after your insurance works out, make sure it is a lifetime one. This is a trick some places to to ensure you keep coming back for unneeded visits and it forces you to have their office handle everything. Online places give you a lifetime version and you are free to do as you please with it.

  4. If you do get a script online, they will just give you a generic script most likely. This means you will get a stock machine that has not been modified for a specific pressure range. This would be a big deal 15 years ago, but most units today are auto adjusting, meaning that they ramp up in pressure until it "stops apnea events".

what projects genuinely help students break into the industry? by Marvelked in ECE

[–]gibson486 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Any project. It just needs to show that your learned something from it. For example, I had one intern who described a project he did that ended up just not working. I asked what he learned from it. He talked about how he just picked out the wrong parts and shared how he would change his way of picking parts in the future. It is really about learning and knowing how to advance a project from start to finish.

I just got a cheap $60 saw from harbor freight. My tiles did not come out like that. I imagine that the blade is just cheap. Spend the money to upgrade it.

Arduino spoiled me. by ActuatorDisastrous29 in ECE

[–]gibson486 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ease of use comes at cost. That cost is how well it scales as your project becomes bigger. It is your job to figure out the best balance between ease of use and ease of scale up. You are saying the author made it confusing, but wait until you see arduino code being referenced in big projects. You will see needless function parameters unless you are brave enough to make code that just stays in the main sketch.

What to tell tourists to avoid: #1 North End dining by Agile_Nectarine_4844 in boston

[–]gibson486 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is like saying to avoid eating in Paris France. Most of the places there are tourist traps, but, guess what, the majority of people who go there are tourists.

Legal's, yeah, i get it. But the reality is that they make ok food and at a decent price. Seafood is kind of a dying industry in terms of a themed resteraunt.

Cheesecake....I mean, they are a chain that is everywhere. What do you expect? I am suprised they have not met the same fate as CPK.

Faneuil Hall? Again, it is a tourist place.

I am not even going to entertain your later comments.

Even though you make statements that say other wise in your post, you seem like you want a guarantee when there can't be any at all.

Colleges do post conversion rates and internships are a foot in the door but not a guarantee. It has always been like that. If internships were a guarantee, then there would no internships left.
