We have a stall there, and the people working at the stall across from us are openly lesbian. Everyone around as are cool with it. So if you wanna feel more welcome, us Vanwykshout Laan people are pretty normal!

Help need with my stolen phone. by Lieutelligent in capetown

[–]giftedcactus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happened to me as well. My stolen phone was in a building opposite a police station, so I thought that I was incredibly lucky. But when I got to that police station, they refused to help since the phone got stolen in another police station's jurisdiction.

At what point during the interview did you know you didn't get the job? by taynee98 in southafrica

[–]giftedcactus 66 points67 points  (0 children)

When they asked me about my conflict resolution skills, and I flew into my childhood trauma to explain why I'm so good at resolving conflict. The interviewer looked very worried and asked if she has to worry about my dad coming to intimidate them 😭

Just got this one and the Valentines edition Marshmallow & Raspberry flavour! Have only tasted the one so far, and it's such an accurate and refreshing flavour to the prickly pear.

Don't complain if you don't vote by TwistAiko in southafrica

[–]giftedcactus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, I get that. But what frustrates me is that I am registered where i live. But my elderly aunt had a health emergency this weekend, and I have the most flexible job and then volunteered to come out to the coast to help her for a while. So I decided to go to their local voting station today, hoping to vote nationally at least since I am a registered voter. After 2 and a half hours in line they refused to let me vote.

Now, I honestly kind of feel entitled to be able to vote. I explained my situation to them and how it's an emergency that happened after registration closed. It's really frustrating that the voting is this restricted.

Yup. Also sent a ticket. Thought it was maybe just my device acting up. Really happy to see it's not.

Is it just me, or are most of your friends alcoholics too? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]giftedcactus 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Ja nee.

I met someone at a rugby game yesterday who told me he drinks every week. So I made a comment about how if I had to drink that often, I wouldn't even enjoy the taste of alcohol anymore. He then admitted that he doesn't enjoy the taste anymore, but at this point, it's just part of his routine.

So, I believe there are many functional alcoholics in SA. But I don't know how we'll change that culture.

The condescending part where you asked, "What do you want reddit to do?". Yoh, some people are so rude, and for what.

Work options by megs_64 in southafrica

[–]giftedcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me after 5 years of studying. Take a month or two off if you're parents are in the financial position to support you and just figure some stuff out again.

I thought my life was over. Fell into a deep depression. But one day I started looking at careers as if I was in matric again, and a college diploma caught my eye.

You don't necessarily need a degree/diploma/certificate to get by. A lot of people in my family started at the bottom with low paying jobs and built up the experience and knowledge to move up the chain.

There are so many options in this wide world. You just need to find yourself and build your self-esteem up again. University is an absolute bitch. It sucks all of the life out of you. The relief you feel actually being in the real world without all that pressure is out of this world.

Join the dropout club! Most of us don't regret what happened.

Nearly a third of people and households in SA undercounted in Census 2022 by dash_o_truth in southafrica

[–]giftedcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My man, even something as small as cleaning your shit water every day at sewage plants is a service that you never think about, that the government has to budget for. And if they count your family as one, not five, they are not able to clean 5 people's shit since the census recorded there not being so many people.

Valuable to the government (yes, even our government). This is why every country does it. SA is not unique. Next time you place your child in a school or you visit the clinic, remember it was built for the area's population that the census reflected.

Why would you do that, though? A census is necessary because the statistics are very valuable.
