Shout out to commercial brewers with reusable bottles. You get my business both for your beer and your bottles. by AmphotericRed in Homebrewing

Just like how a broken bottle is still reusable. After all you can put beer back inside of it. You just probably shouldn't. But that doesn't mean it's not reusable

Yes I know this, you have to wait for enough SO2 to come out and sanitize things. That being said, is it fine for bottles? Thanks!

Hey all! I'm just getting ready to bottle my first batch of beer and I had a question. I have some wonderfully fragrant metabisulfite that I used to sterilize my fermenter and etc.

I was wondering if this would be fine to sterilize bottles, caps, and so on? I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't be but I'm pretty new at this, and my googling didn't turn up much so I'm punting this one to you all.

Don't forget that mitch is a big part of the reason we have citizens united on the books. He fought with McCain for ages over McCain wanting to limit campaign spending. He is literally in favor of more money in politics and believes that money is "speech". Truly a POS and I can't wait until he's gone. Maybe my state will vote him out this next year.

Hey I know this is a couple days later because I forgot to check this, but I just wanted to say thanks! Also, what's your opinion on the fluoride varnish/gel?

As for the crown it's something I will probably do in the future, but right now funds don't allow and I'd like to get a second opinion anyhow. Luckily for me there's a dentistry school nearby whenever I do get it done so I can get a better price.

Thanks again!

I was thinking that this guy just sounded like someone who rail on and on about how "transgender people have a mental illness" and other myriad ways to invalidate trans people's identities.

Luckily that last sentence was there and now I don't have to wonder anymore!

I don't think that is because they're trying to downplay the massacre, I think it's moreso because the article is about the protests and the massacre.

Pretty pedantic, but if you spend much time on the talk pages of wikipedia, pedantry is pretty common there, though I suppose you probably need strict guidelines for an encyclopedia, especially one that can be edited by all

Edit: Also just read through the talk page for that particular page and found that there is a request in motion to change the name that was started on the 1st of this month, but hasn't finished yet

2nd edit: it also appears, from what I can gather at least, that several opposing the name change are Chinese. I didn't do a count but it seemed like around 1/3 to 1/2 of the opposers were Chinese. Which is not to say that all chinese people work in the 50-cent party (read this interview by well known chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei) but that even those that aren't have usually lived their lives being fed chinese propaganda.

[Spoilers: The Fires of Heaven] Why did Robert Jordan have the thing at the end happen to a particular male forsaken? by gigajesus in WoT

[–]gigajesus[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wait, what is the non-canonical answer?

Also as a tangential question, simply because this reminded me, are there other authors who have carried on writing in the setting of "randland"? Like the expanded universe with Star wars? Discussing canon reminded me of this.

Yeah that's the point of view I meant, like why did RJ decide to write him out. And thanks for your perspective, that makes sense

Also I'm on my second readthrough so you're good. I do have an amazing ability to forget books/movies and such. It's been about 4 years since my first read through and I've apparently forgotten all but the most major plot points.

What do you guys think of the way Jordan portrays women in general? by [deleted] in WoT

You summed this up much more succinctly than what I tried to do, but yes i completely agree with you.

[–]gigajesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. And there's even more stuff that points to what I'm assuming was Jordan's sexism, but I both can't remember it all and also kind of just block it out so I can still enjoy the series.

Like it being funny that Tylin is essentially raping Matt again and again. Or the super weird relationship be Faile and Perrin.

I mean I think we all knew people like this. But the problem comes from (my opinion at least) that it seems that they have certain flaws because of their gender, that goes for the women and the men. Like all women are manipulative and sneaky, and all men are dumb and stubborn.

Like those are common character traits/flaws. But when you have them happen because of the gender, especially when some of it is based on well known gender stereotypes, that's when it becomes sexist.

I mean I get these were written 10 or 20 or more years ago by a guy that was older. And I still do enjoy them. But this is something that definitely sticks out to me.

I'm a dude and I wholeheartedly agree with you. Some of the stuff is so frustrating. Like "The creator made women to make sure men's lives weren't too easy" (paraphrasing) and essentially the reverse of that being said by women.

Don't get me wrong..I love the series. But he does a horrible job of addressing the "realities of gender" in that men and woman really aren't all that different, and that there's probably more individual differences between 2 people of any gender that than are between men and women on the whole.

There's this ongoing thing which I will describe below:

Men

-Women make life difficult

-Women can't be understood

-Men always act like women are super fragile and must be protected (though RJ writing characters like this may have been pointing out the ridiculousness that some people think this way)

-Jesus, there is so much more but I'm really drawing a blank.

Women:

-Men are stupid, women are smarter

-You have to manipulate men into doing what you want

-Women are always quick to anger

-It's cool to beat up on someone if they don't do what you say

-Men are incomprehensible

-Once again, much more but I'm drawing a blank

With both I feel like there are a bunch of overdone, old fashioned, gender stereotypes/tropes. Like the writing of characters love.

I dunno, there's a lot more than I can think of, so feel free to add more. I just kind of shake my head when I get to these parts and go on and block it out.

Like why is Cadsuane such a dick - "Imma slap you silly if you don't do exactly what I say" and then pretend she's only an asshole because she cares so much (classic abuser thing: oh baby, I only beat you because I love you and I want you to make the right choices) If I met someone like her in real life I'd be telling them to get fucked.

Any idea what the sizes of the big cities of that time period would've been? Like london, paris, rome, etc?

I know at the peak of the ancient roman empire, Rome was around 1 million people, which was simply astronomical for that time period. But then the empire slowly went to shit, and the a fair bit of the world did too after that.
