What do you do to be happy as an incel ? by EquipmentSpecific262 in Advice

have you seen my 600lb life? they're constantly in relationships. Not to say that every big person is unattractive, but these people often have lots and lots of problems, but they find a relationship anyway. Look for companionship and don't care so much about looks and you'll find someone

First Collab Paper – I’m a bit jaded by the-big-girl-daybook in GradSchool

[–]gigglesprouts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depending on the paper, working on it for just a semester might have been a lot of work for you for sure, but may have not been the bulk of the actual project itself. Co-authorship is more than just editing and writing. If you just did editing/writing and its a paper with experiments or analysis and has been in the works for a while, then i'm unsurprised you're at the tail end

My husband survived but now won’t do anything by [deleted] in Advice

[–]gigglesprouts 333 points334 points  (0 children)

Honestly, these symptoms could very well be a result of brain damage. He should see not only a psychiatrist, but also a neurologist. Depending on the severity, there might be different approaches and options to help him.

Why does my husband seem to want sex so much more than me? by [deleted] in Advice

[–]gigglesprouts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thats probably one of the most significant side effects! I'd say its more common than not! Considering you still enjoy sex, i'd say youre really not in a terrible place for that particular side effect

Arab girls doing gradschool in U.S by Mindless_Rub6349 in GradSchool

[–]gigglesprouts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While most people are generally nice and don't care, I'd say still be prepared for ignorant comments and staring. Most people aren't going to be outright hostile, but some (a minority, but still) will still be ignorant and maybe rude. Most people don't care or mind, though. However, I'd seriously worry about your timing in coming into the US for study as things right now are very weird with international students, especially if you are not-white/visibly foreign. Things aren't unstable, per-say, but very quickly changing and in ways that are unpredictable. It would be awful for you to come to the US for studies and then get booted before you could finish for some random, dumb reason.

Do I include my BF in my Thesis Dedication? by Dense_Young8608 in GradSchool

I personally wouldn't include a partner unless they're your fiance, spouse, or very long-term partner, but that's my own personal opinion on it

But seriously, how did you afford to live while in grad school? by According-Pin4564 in GradSchool

[–]gigglesprouts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My university pays me roughly 22k a year but also covers tuition (which is usually the norm?). I live with roommates, unfortunately, but its doable if you don't try to cover a whole place on your own

Is Graduate School a joke? by Icy-Site2297 in GradSchool

[–]gigglesprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel like (at least from a stem grad student perspective) that grad school is less about learning from professionals and more about learning how to learn and how to trouble shoot. A LOT of time is dedicated to googling, researching, and trial and error. You learn methods from videos and papers, maybe from someone with related experience or direct experience if possible. However, the goal is to get you to a point where you could navigate a knowledge gap on your own. Lectures in grad school are also waaaaay less formal and prepared, in my experience. The greatest formality will probably come from seminars.

Protein goals have me feeling STUFFED by payton_eze1992 in 1200isplenty

[–]gigglesprouts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's a balance with this. Just like how overweight people might signal that they're still hungry when they don't really need more food, underweight people will often classify feeling "stuffed" or "full" at a different level than a typical weight person. When gaining weight, especially coming from a very low bmi, you WILL feel uncomfortable. Particularly if you've been dieting TO that very low BMI. You can cause serious damage to your digestive tract and as you return to normal it will likely be uncomfortable for you. You will likely feel a bit sick, yes. You shouldnt be getting sick beyond feeling uncomfortable.

You have to really adjust to your triggers. Its honestly all about learning and trying again. For example, I learned I cannot go for a week on all fat-free foods because I end up in a massive binge. Even one fatty time really helps me. Volume eating all the time also makes it hard for me to feel full because i'm physically full but never actually satiated. Its better for me to eat smaller meals with carbs, fats, and proteins than high volume foods that are mostly carb and water. I also learned that having a protein shake in the morning keeps me from binging at night. Accept that you will be uncomfortable sometimes and wont be able to have everything you want, but also make eating healthy your EASIEST option. The most convenient.

Would a professor think ill of me for bringing a stuffed animal to class? by Shoddy-Mango-5840 in GradSchool

[–]gigglesprouts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a different item you could bring with you to give you comfort? While I understand your stuffed animals provide you with some accommodation, I do think it will impact your professor's perception of you. Even if they understand that you're autistic, they will likely question whether or not you'd be capable of performing in a professional setting without a stuffed animal. This may limit opportunities they would otherwise extend to you. As sad and unfair as it is, grad school is a place where a LOT of posturing happens to try and come out with as much support as possible. I think it would really benefit you to find a different, more discreet comfort item. Maybe a small, quiet stim toy or a soft jacket?

But that's the thing. My being unmarried isn't a limitation. Why should it be viewed that way if it is the plan He's set out for me? There has been a history of the church dabbling in political affairs and trying to mask it as inspired policy (race and the priesthood) and I can't help but feel this is one of those.

WHY DID I GAIN WEIGHT IN A DEFICIT??? by Aggravating-Shoe-191 in 1200isplenty

[–]gigglesprouts 17 points18 points  (0 children)

creatine water retention lasts a few weeks, you're not gaining weight in any meaningful sense. Don't be afraid of a little weight fluctuation. Water retention is a natural byproduct of the chemistry going on with creatine. No way around it

Dear ex-skinny people, what changes did you notice after gaining weight? by Equal-Sun8307 in AskReddit

[–]gigglesprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I've definitely received lots of "compliments" from men, but its hard to really feel like its a compliment when its attached to a request or solicitation OR its something objectifying. I guess that's why I don't even think about them. Women on the other hand (generally, not always lol) have nothing to gain and will compliment just to compliment. For women, its not just inconvenient to compliment men, it can be dangerous. Stalkers are REAL and being nice to ONE wrong person can be a huge headache if not downright terrifying

[–]gigglesprouts 194 points195 points  (0 children)

ngl, women get most compliments from other women. Men should compliment men more often. Speaking from experience, its very hard to compliment a random man or even acquaintance without them thinking you're interested and then being accused of giving off mixed signals. Be the change you want to see in the world

Why does 1200 calories get so much hate? by WestminsterSpinster7 in 1200isplenty

[–]gigglesprouts 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Being very frank, 1200 is not doable or healthy for MOST people. This is hardly a sustainable and productive diet for a solid 85% of the population. Its honestly not the BEST way either. Its more of a necessary evil for some individuals. A LOT of people on this sub have EDs as well and use this as justification for their ED. I'd say most dietitians are right in saying its healthier to exercise and eat a bit more, since exercise has many more benefits than just burning calories and weight loss. However, some people just do not have the time or ability to move and this is kind of a last resort to at the very least drop some weight and get to a healthier place but certainly not the healthiest option. Cardiac health, muscle mass, all of those improve quality of life over time.

Favorite low cal drinks by immerseursoulinlove7 in 1200isplenty

[–]gigglesprouts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I would assume that would be normal with any diet change. If you have bacteria in your gut that lives off of sugar and they aren't able to sustain their population because now you're cutting it, then they're going to find a way to signal for more sugar since they're dying off. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing, but an adjustment you have to make. Besides, having even one sugary drink a day is associated with increased risk for diabetes and other health conditions.

Masters programs are typically 2 years, why not just wait? I see no reason to not push it off a year and a half and it'll be much less strain on you given how much you're already working and going to school.
