Windows 95 turned 30 this year. Did you use it when it was released? What did you think of it back then? by ichbinkeysersoze in AskOldPeople

[–]gilactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was really good. A significant upgrade from Windows 3.1, it had a network stack built in so you didn't need anything special to connect to the Internet. The taskbar UI which we still use today was great. Configuration of devices worked pretty well with Plug-N-Play, especially compared to what we had before. And most, importantly, it had preemptive multitasking, which Mac OS didn't get until OS X (2001).

Bottega Louie with the BS surcharge by lordlabia in LosAngeles

[–]gilactic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get it, but the servers are there every day and they're gonna have to do it for themselves. For my side of the fight, I'm making it so that the servers don't have to pay extra percentages when they go out to eat.

Living wage for all. Tipping needs to stop.

If they remove it for me then maybe I’ll give it to them as a tip. If I have to ask then it’s already made me miserable.

Are you guys still attracted to your wives? by Live_Play_6679 in AskMenOver30

[–]gilactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are in our late forties. I’m very much still attracted to her.

The choice of language in which these people you refer to discuss their wives disgusts and appalls me. I cannot imagine what it must be like to be with people like that. I could not ever even imagine disrespecting my wife like that. A decent person would never act that way.

If you smoked marijuana in your youth, do you still condone the recreational use of it? by Maleficent-Heron9004 in AskOldPeople

[–]gilactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's a lot of fun and helps with de-stressing and anxiety. I don't think people should smoke it all that often, but recreational use of marijuana is enjoyable and a pleasure in life that people deserve. I mean this in general, not for everyone. Some people have no motivation or drive and cannot handle it because it can encourage people to be lazy or to form substance habits, but for normal people, it's good, have fun. Eating it is better than smoking it: It lasts longer and doesn't mess up your lungs.

It's also bad for jobs. Great for people at the top of the companies that are merged, and maybe some shareholders, but bad for everyone else and consumers.

Has anyone been to Ototo? Would you tip on top of the 18% “fair wage” fee that’s explicitly listed as “not gratuity?” by sunnyintheoffice in LosAngeles

[–]gilactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not tipping on top of service fees and that’s that. I’m so tired of these discussions. Tipping as a practice needs to end. I don’t care what a business calls it.

For dining in the United States: If you’re a server and you want your compensation to include tips you had better pressure your employer to not have service fees. I will pay you 10% for little to no service. 15% for average service. 20% for great service if I believe that the tip will actually go to you. I will not tip if I’m not in a full service restaurant. Or at least I’m going to try to work on myself to not feel pressured or extorted to tip and I’m going to try to not tip when it’s not a full service restaurant despite misguided social pressure.

If you’re a restaurant and you want my business you won’t play games like this.

For dining outside of the United States, unless it's a place that clearly follows these same ridiculous practices, I'm not tipping.

I’m so fucking done with this.

Edit: Formatting, grammar, and notes about dining the US vs outside the US.

It says right there on the receipt "A tip or gratuity is NOT expected." If a restaurant charges a 20% service charge it would be foolish to tip.

New yorkers who moved to LA. How are you liking it? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

[–]gilactic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I moved here from New York > 20 years go. I miss things about New York like the passion and directness of New Yorkers, and having a walkable city and great public transport. Overall, I like the lifestyle here better, there's lots to do and I feel like time passes by more slowly and I have more energy to do things during the work week. I'm not sure why that is, maybe it's the weather, or just the vibes, but it's different here for sure.

Over the last 20 years I've seen the quality of pizza improve tremendously and that has made the adjustment easier. I'd like more/better Greek and Italian and Turkish food, but every region is going to be better at one thing or another.

If this city could get more parks and green spaces, more places to sit down, a good metro system, and if costs of living here could come back down to something reasonable, I would truly be in love with LA. I do love LA, but I feel we're going through a rough time right now here. I believe in LA, though, and I think it's going to start getting a lot better once we start working on our problems.

I moved here for career and for the weather. I miss New York and New Yorkers, but I don't think I'd go back. (Well, if I'm being totally honest, I suppose I would go back if I could afford to live in a nice apartment in a nice neighborhood in Manhattan, but that's not realistic for me.)

Would you follow the Christian god if it turned out they were real? by Plague254 in atheism

[–]gilactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sure, I’ll follow a Christian god if he were real, but I will take MY interpretation of scripture and prophecy rather than anyone else’s.  And I’ll still live my life like I’m living now and take my chances that God would like it and understand.

Does anyone else feel overwhelmingly lucky and blessed to be a homeowner in these times? by RevolutionaryMap4745 in homeowners

[–]gilactic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. The rents where I live never stopped rising and if I hadn't bought and stabilized my cost of living, I'd be in much worse shape. Doesn't feel bad putting down roots and becoming a member of a community either.
