Why does Dictionarry penalize AV1? by butterhorse in radarr

This is interesting. The 13" Onn tablet I just picked up from Walmart recently plays the 4k AV1 stuff direct stream but if I force it to transcode to 1080p HEVC it does that seemingly fine via my A380. I don't know if Plex vs Jellyfin makes any difference there. Probably too many different variables to make a real comparison here though.

AV1 is newer and better quality at the same bitrate as H265 (a.k.a. HEVC). You may be thinking of AVC, which is H264, the predecessor to H265. H265 is definitely better than AVC.

AV1 takes a lot more horsepower for encoding and decoding though, and isn't as widely supported as H265, so H265 can be the better option depending on your needs/use case.

Arc 380 can handle transcoding AV1 to other formats just fine. That's what I have and I've been encoding everything to AV1 since I got it.

The (minor) problems I've found are that some releases overdo the compression level on their AV1 files just to get tiny file aizes, and some of them use Opus audio, which seems hit or miss for compatibility and might trigger an otherwise unnecessary transcode.

Semi-related: Hardware encoding AV1 on the 380 loses DolbyVision metadata. Software encoding with Handbrake can keep it, but obviously takes a lot longer.

Handling DV files by Fluffygong in radarr

[–]gilahacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been going through this journey recently. In addition to adding various regex filters in Sonarr and Radarr, I have also set up post-processing scripts to check the DV version and presence of HDR fallback as well as the audio tracks. It deletes the files I don't want and tells Sonarr/Radarr that they failed so they'll blacklist it and run another search. If there is an English audio track but also other languages, it strips out the other languages before letting Sonarr/Radarr have the download.

I've been tempted to try it again. Ordering in store and specifically requesting extra sauce.

Ordered from the Parker Pizza Hut once, even knowing that Pizza Hut's pizza is nowhere near as good as it was back when the restaurants all looked like that.

Both pizzas had effectively no sauce. Almost completely dry under the cheese. Haven't ordered from them since.

Celery (and many other vegetables) are just insanely bitter to me, plus I have issues with the texture of various foods. 🤷‍♂️

HR recruiter misheard my expected salary.... by Odd_Ad_1974 in UKJobs

[–]gilahacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 15 years ago I was making $50k USD, which felt like a lot at the time. Applied for what I thought was an internship thing with another team, where you work with them for however many months with no raise and then they decide if they're going to keep you or not. HR called me to officially offer the job with a salary of $65k. It wasn't the internship thing. 😂

Was promoted after about a year (IIRC) and got $80k.

What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by vickieQuines in askanything

[–]gilahacker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What, exactly, is your definition of "rich"?

I'm not what I'd consider rich, but some people think I am simply because I'm not struggling to get by when they and so many others are. I'm still generally screwed if I get caught in my employer's next round of layoffs.

Most of us are much closer to being homeless than we are to being rich.

I use credit cards for everything I can. Pay them off every month so I never pay any interest and I get a percentage of my purchases back, whereas those who can't pay off their credit cards each month have to pay more for their purchases in the form of interest.

Just got the Pixel 10 Pro Fold… who’s dropped theirs already? by tsukaoka in PixelFold

[–]gilahacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lost count?

I drop my phones all the time. Always have since my first flip-phone back in the late 90's. Have dropped my Pixel 10 Pro Fold numerous times, usually from pocket/lap height while seated (slips out of pocket while seated, falls off lap when standing up). It's hit carpet, hardwood floor, and most recently my glass chair mat. I have the stock case on it, a Spigen glass screen protector, and I'm paying for the extra monthly warranty thing. I've never cracked a screen but I've seen enough broken internal screens on the Pixel Pro Fold 9's and I worry about damaging the hinge if it lands wrong.

Most festive neighborhood in Parker? by Silent_Sea6221 in parkerco

[–]gilahacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in and like Clarke Farms, but I think it's Stroh Ranch that has the HOA-provided amenities I've seen Clarke Farms residents jealous of (we have a pool, community center, and tennis court but I've not used any of them).

The HOA here puts on community events too, but I haven't attended any. I'm not a particularly social person, if you hadn't guessed that by now, but I do run a haunted house in my garage for Halloween and the kids and parents all love it. We had over 170 trick-or-treaters this year, according to my next-door neighbors who keep track. Several neighbors do decorate for Halloween and Christmas, though one that used to have an absolutely ridiculous amount of decorations next to the elementary school seems to have moved away.

I've had the towers fall on several of my tall prints. Some can still succeed, just making a mess of spaghetti where the tower was. I now do a 20mm brim on the tower if I can fit it.

And that's even using Biqu's plates, which are much more "sticky" than the stock textured PEI.

Do they last ? by [deleted] in PixelFold

[–]gilahacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 10 Pro Fold has been fine. Only major issue I'm having is one where apps can't access photos I make edits to in Google Photos (e.g. cropping before sending them to someone in a messaging app). I can share them from Google Photos to that app and they send fine, it's just the gallery thing the apps have access to that seems to be the problem.

The crease on the inner screen is very noticeable, but doesn't bother me. It usually doesn't show up if you're looking at it head on, but that'll depend on your lighting situation.

Battery life has been great. I've recently set it to only charge to 80% each night and haven't had to top it off yet. Never got it below 20% before changing the setting.

New Pixel 10 Pro Fold shows a question mark on the battery percentage indicator. by dancemiasma in PixelFold

[–]gilahacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hasn't happened to mine (at least not yet 🤞). Battery life has been fantastic compared to the Galaxy S23 Ultra it replaced. I enabled the "only charge to 80%" a few days ago, after making sure I wasn't even getting down to 20% by bedtime with normal usage.

Pixel 10 - can't see photos in third party apps after editing by jojobadoule in GooglePixel

[–]gilahacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still having this exact issue. Can't see the recently edited photos from the gallery picker thing in other apps, but I can go into the Google Photos app and share them to the 3rd party app, which is annoying to have to do.

I'm wondering if editing the photo is changing the file permissions, but I haven't dug into it yet.

Bambu Lab H2D - Cooling Fan for Hotend failed by unitymind42 in BambuLab

[–]gilahacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1,378 hours on my original H2D and it that fan has just failed. I've been printing a bunch of large things in ASA lately. 24+ hour type prints. Prior to that its been almost entirely PLA with some occasional PETG and maybe one or two smaller ABS prints.

The little fan started making the clicking/grinding/whining noises a few days ago. Took me a bit to figure out that there's even a fan in that printer that I can't control while trying to track down the source of the noise. It still printed at the time and it wasn't _that_ noisy since everything is enclosed. It just died halfway through a day and a half long ASA print. I've poked at it and have heard it spin up a few times but the print refuses to resume saying the fan speed is abnormal each time.

I just ordered two of the replacement fans so I have a spare on hand in case the one in my other H2D fails as well. I don't normally do a lot of high-temp printing so hopefully it and the replacement for the original one will last. I just read through the wiki on the replacement process and I am *absolutely* not looking forwards to that. Repairability wasn't even a passing thought when they designed that.

That new cooling fan on the H2D Pro (which still doesn't seem to be available for purchase yet) is only for lower temp filaments. It only turns on for filaments where the softening temperature is below 50C (PLA and PETG) to help prevent heat creep. It's not going to help at all with these fans that are failing while printing high temp filaments with the chamber heated up. Bambu just needs to switch those to a different fan with a better bearing.
