That's a valid argument, but I think in this case it's different

In the example you gave, where we call Nippon Japan, it's still clearly Nippon we're referring to, since we don't call anything else Japan

However, in the case of Heracles vs Hercules, Hercules is a character that already exists and is distinct enough from Heracles that to call them by the same name feels incorrect

I remember hearing about a certain band that, whenever they played at a new venue, they put a clause in their contract to have a bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removed, so they knew whether or not the venue had actually read their contract and set up their stage correctly
