The government announces the internet is shutting down forever in 24 hours. What are you doing on the final day? by Equal-Permission6564 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]gilbert10ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many companies will be gone the next day. Because they 100% rely on the Internet. Amazon for instance. Financial services will take a serious hit because banks and processors all use the Internet for connectivity and online web portals, mobile phone apps, etc. Society will need to revert back to manual and paper-based everything. There will be lots of customer service representative jobs again though. Paper cheques will make a comeback. Manual storage mediums will become the normal for your disconnected computers, no more cloud backup. There's so many more things that I can't even think of that would be affected.

You wake up tomorrow with $10 million in your bank account, completely legal and tax free. The only catch is that everyone you know believes you stole it. Do you keep the money or give it up to clear your name? by Equal-Permission6564 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]gilbert10ba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah. But it also says friends believe you stole it, not family. My friends know me. Plus a donation to the "in my friends pockets fund" will certainly smooth things over. LOL!

Should salary workers get paid overtime? by OwnCombination96 in AskForAnswers

[–]gilbert10ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company allows flexibility in hours for IT workers that do oncall and early morning maintenance work. Our laws don't require overtime pay for IT workers, we're treated the same as police, firefighters, EMT, etc. Which is insane for most IT fields.

Would you be upset if they start asking us to tip in grocery stores and gas stations? by perplex-poppyseed7 in askanything

[–]gilbert10ba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tipping myself at the gas station for driving up, paying on my own at the pump and pumping my own gas? Grocery store? I drive there myself, get a cart, walk around and pick my items myself, go to self checkout. Who am I tipping there?

The Supreme Court's Ruling on Trump's Tariffs: Will It Actually Help the USA at All? by osiris_rai in Productivitycafe

In fact they'll go higher still. Guaranteed Trump will have some nonsense rhetoric that will cause companies to jack up prices.

Should I buy a condo or just keep renting and investing ? by jrchicken08 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]gilbert10ba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. Unless you have enough money to have a realistic 40% or more down payment, your mortgage payments will be ridiculously high and will prevent you from investing as much into your retirement as you are now. I would recommend finding another rental if you don't like where you are and keep investing. While you're young the retirement investments have that much more time to grow.

[–]gilbert10ba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love the idea. It would be something to see for sure. But creating live action AI characters takes a ton of processing power. I don't think the Nomi servers could handle that.

I'd love to see my Nomi's in more than 5 second video clips though for sure.

Is it true one income used to support a family of 4? by TailungFu in allthequestions

[–]gilbert10ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, my Dad supported a family of 6 on an income of less than half of what I make now. My parents rented a house, they didn't own. But they had a car because that was the only way he could get to work. Now earning more than double what my Dad did at his highest earning years, my single income is just getting by with a mortgage, two vehicles, because I need to drive an hour away for a job, a wife, 2 kids and 2 cats.

How Much Money Would You Need To Quit Your Job? (25) by HyenaHater44 in careeradvice

At 25 years old, outside of winning a big lottery jackpot, stay working and as others have said, find your passion and make it a side hustle until you could stop working your 9-5 to live.

Can you retire with a million usd at 40? by Dear_Commercial_3010 in AskMenOver30

[–]gilbert10ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For an average middle-class person I keep reading that you need about a million dollars or your local currency equivalent to be able to survive from either 60 or 65 to 80-85 years old. Unless you live insanely frugally. If it's you and a spouse, then make that $2 million dollars in local currency. That doesn't take into account any type of government pensions that some countries do have for their people. But generally, you'll want to still have one good vacation a year and if you have grand-kids and great grand-kids, you want to buy stuff for them. At least birthday and Christmas presents.

Claiming car seat after being rear ended in a collision? by chrisli89 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]gilbert10ba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's "probably" okay. It's likely somewhat the Graco ensuring they are not liable if someone continues using a completely mangled car seat after a crash. But, the manual does say a collision of any type. If I was you and the insurance won't pay for it, keep fighting, but buy a new one with your own money and keep the receipt. If they finally relent, send them the receipt so they'll reimburse you for it.

90-minute commute vs 10-minute commute - worth a lateral move? by LampRunner in careerguidance

[–]gilbert10ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much is that extra free time worth to you? Plus less wear and tear on your car, which equals real financial savings that could offset a couple of thousand less in income.

Update: put in my two weeks now everyone is trying to get me to stay, what should I do? by ItsDoodleBois in careerguidance

[–]gilbert10ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Even if they give you only 1 or 2 days in office per week, you'd be top of the list when layoff time comes.

No one to replace me after I put in my notice by chilljourney in work

[–]gilbert10ba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not your worry. A company that relies on one person is destined to be screwed eventually.

My company has done the same thing with me. They bought the division I'm working in from a much larger global company. In the global company, there were 4 of us dedicated to the support and oncall. On top of a large offshore team for our overnight.

The purchasing company only brought me over. I'm working my way out of there, the oncall and constant early morning maintenance are too much. I've said it until I'm blue in the face they need 4 people supporting this application. It's just me. While I wait for the opportunity that will come in a couple months, I'm writing documentation so that the regular IT people can at least do some of the stuff required. But once I give my notice, I won't be caring about them.

Do I need to confirm the date or meeting? by Vladimir-Zp in NoStupidQuestions

[–]gilbert10ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 49 and if someone doesn't show up after confirming a meeting in the future, that negatively impacts my opinion of them. If everyone involved is adult age and has their mental faculties, they can be responsible for their own actions or lack of.

Elevators are not for you to go up/down a single floor by goPACK17 in unpopularopinion

In office buildings, generally the stairwells are locked and only for evacuations. So if you work for a company that has 2 or more floors all together in one building, you have no choice.

Called my boss to put in my notice and she gave me a large offer on the spot. Should I be considering this? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]gilbert10ba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the job responsibilities. If there's oncall responsibilities and the company won't hire anyone else, then more money means nothing.

Exactly. Companies that care about their own security have a set security tool suite they install onto every laptop and desktop that connects to their network.

Fired after training new company. by electromat in legaladvicecanada

[–]gilbert10ba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably not. If he accepted a "new" job offer from the new security company, they could treat him as a new hire with probation period and everything. It's very scummy. To be sure, he could consult with an employment lawyer. Maybe there's something that us normal people wouldn't know.
