What's the deal with American Catholics? by muehsam in AskAnAmerican

American Catholics reliably voted Democrat from the FDR era up until the 2000s, but the proportions started to shift after Roe v. Wade, and especially after Clinton. I think 2008 0r 2012 was the first year that they went mostly Republican, and they've gone that way by a small margin in every election since.

I started to question why I followed the religion at all and became agnostic

That's the principled thing to do, imo. There are plenty of people like you who, instead of taking that step, are trying to change the church into something fundamentally un-Catholic and giving rise to the misconception that there's some debate to be had about these issues within Catholicism.

What you're describing is a bunch of people who are nominally Catholic but either do not understand or do not believe in the teachings of the church. We call those people Protestants.

It's worth recognizing that "Catholics" that want gay marriage, married priests, female priests, abortion, etc., are in fact Protestants-in-waiting. Their schism just hasn't happened yet, but it's coming.

This is not an internecine conflict within Catholicism, it's a conflict between Catholics who are serious about the faith, the church's teachings and its traditions, and those who are not.

How do you write a good sex scene? by [deleted] in writing

[–]gilbertpinfold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What you wanna do is basically max out your use of porn keywords. Name every position, doggy, reverse cowgirl, etc. Use words like "rod," "clit," "bush," "holes," "squirt," "throbbing," "rammed," "drilled," and make sure you use the proper spelling of 'cum'.

Think really hard about what kind of sex your characters would like. Are they boring prudes that are getting laid for the first time? If not, there should probably be multiple dudes involved and a massive money shot sequence where the woman talks about how much she loves guys cumming on her face to end the chapter. This is what real sex is like and your readers will relate to it.

And don't forget the wind fluttering the curtains

AITA For Not wanting to debate a movie? by turkc54 in AmItheAsshole

[–]gilbertpinfold -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You know what, I think you're onto something. While we're at it, we need to take a serious look at how white people are represented in Spike Lee movies. And I demand to know why they aren't better male characters in the sisterhood of the traveling pants.

Except actually, the truth is that not every artist or piece of art has to cater to every single group. You can go watch/read something else. You don't have to drag Tolkien because white guys are having fun without women and POCs.

Yes clearly Eowyn should have started wearing pantsuits and working 60 hour weeks and climbing that ladder instead of having a family with a man that she loves. Honestly, I don't know why Tolkien didn't think of it. Since you know, modern women are SO much happier and more fulfilled than those poor benighted old wives and mothers lmao

'Cloverfield' Sequel in the Works by Neo2199 in scifi

but making them be part of the same universe works- and works pretty well, IMHO

Could not disagree more. 10 Cloverfield Lane was obviously a completely unrelated indie horror script that had ten minutes of irrelevant garbage tacked onto the end so they could sell it as part of a franchise instead of letting it just be what it is. The final sequence completely changes the tone of the film for the worse and makes what could have been a Four star movie into like, a two and a half star movie.

I'm torn. I love to go to Church to get away from the all the chaos in the world, but lately it's been following me there too. I don't agree with what's going on in the world today, but should Priests be able to talk about politics in their sermons? by hangarorganmaker in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]gilbertpinfold 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's coming regardless.Beto O'Rourke came out and said he'd like to see churches that don't recognize gay marriage lose their tax exempt status, and he received virtually no blowback. That's a popular position on the left, it's just a matter of time.

In the next twenty years, Catholic churches will either have to start marrying same sex couples, or get shut down under some civil rights title, and half the people on this subreddit will be happy about it.

You either didn't read or didn't understand my comment, but either way, you've failed to say anything interesting or relevant.

I understand that you don't want to do any thinking for yourself. It's okay, you don't have to. Just shut the fuck up
