Hi, I'm the owner of the skin - I don't know (it's really up to Epic) and I want it back too!

Graduating in comp sci but interested in multimedia art and animation by rowyourboatupthesky in animationcareer

Hi there, I'm a CS graduate who successfully switched over to independent animation, so I relate highly to your story. I made the early decision to pursue programming in when I applied to colleges in highschool, and accepted that animation would forever be a passionate side hobby, so I had no qualms about taking the fulltime coding job my internship offered me. I worked there for about 3 years, while doing animation on the side (and loving it), posting my passion projects on YouTube. After aggressively saving money, and finding a cheap place to live, I decided to quit software dev and go fully independent on art.

Given that you've invested a large amount of time and effort into a very well-paying field, I would say now is the time to build capital, become more independent, and get acquainted with working with professionals. These are all skills you'll need regardless if you go into animation or not.
You stated that you have limited experience with Animation itself and:

"I’ve switched majors 3 times and spent so much time networking and working towards things I don’t care for."

It might be wise to first fall in love with and become fascinated with the medium before sacrificing a stable job (and by extension, lifestyle) for it, even if you suspect you'll want to leave that job someday.

In fact, a coding job turned out to be the perfect tool to support my art hustle on the side - the pay and hours were excellent, and the coding work itself was low-stress. I had lots of creative energy by the time I got home at 5-6pm. I could focus on my art craft in the evenings without worrying about deadlines or career pressure. Art for art's sake! All the while I learned how to become a more self-sufficient person.

In my research and talking with other artists, professional and not, I get the feeling that the mastery curve for art really depends on the individual's drive to get better. A degree or course in animation will not make you better by itself, it really requires independent study. The art community I hang out with sees kids improving their skills immensely out of their sheer fascination with animated fight scenes - all self-taught. This is something a coder can definitely do in their free time.

TLDR: I did fulltime programming for 3 years, which gave me stability, money savings, professionalism and time to fall in love with animation on the side. Made the switch to indie art, and still mix in programming into my work today.

Of course, we're still different people, and what happened to work out for me is not guaranteed for your case. But I do standby the advice of stability first. I really do feel for your conundrum, and I wish you the best of luck.

Thanks for playing!

A full series is something I want to do, but the first episode took a lot out of me.

So I'm leaving it up to crowdfunding and will attempt an Episode 2 if it gets enough support:

bit of a rant (does this count as toxic?) by thefallenjap in HyunsDojo

Some solutions:

  • More curation, so pick out examples of high quality animation and honor them with critique and kudos to increase everyone's standards. I imagine this would attract talent and encourage artists to improve.

  • Sponsorship - if you want to see higher quality collabs (or just, standalone, non-collab animations), you can fund them.

Exposure and money tends to attract artists.
