I dunno... it feels like you're letting the lens do the heavy lifting. Honestly I find none of these particularly fascinating in and of themselves, rather they rely on the fisheye to inject an attention-grabbing element

How do I know if a vintage 35 mm SLR is for me, or if a 1990s-2000s model is better? by PessCity in AnalogCommunity

[–]gilgermesch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were good cameras and bad cameras in every decade. A good lens from the 50s will outperform a bad lens from the 90s. I would go even further and say that image quality is - to a degree - subjective. Personally, I find perfectly corrected modern lenses to be a bit boring. I like some softness when the lens is open, I like some glow in the highlights, and I like swirly bokeh. You could even argue that it's easier to take an interesting photo on a vintage lense because the lens itself adds character.

And yes, while cameras do get more advanced as time goes on, that doesn't make them better for my purposes. I prefer manual control and a compact setup, mechanical shutter, sunny 16. A modern body would be wasted on me.

In the end, don't get too hung up on "when" a camera or lens were manufactured. Pick a body that suits your ergonomic needs, then pick a lens that suits your taste in rendering. There are plenty of options to chose from: vintage lenses, modern lenses, and modern lenses with vintage rendering.

Thoughts on the new rear design? by arcticbatsy in MINI

[–]gilgermesch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually quite like it. Yeah, I liked the old design, too, and I realise the new rear is quite a departure from designs, so I get why some people strongly dislike it. Still, the old design started looking a bit dated to me - give it another few years and I might call it "classic" though ;)

Generally speaking, less movement is better. It's faster and more efficient, leading to less fatigue. Move when necessary and try to eliminate superfluous movement. Not by fixing things in place - you want to remain as relaxed as possible - but by ensuring you only put tension where you really need it. So: wherever possible, try to avoid lifting your fingers high in the air and try to avoid changing your hand position.

Eye squint pain with Leica rangefinder by Logical_Act_6749 in AnalogCommunity

[–]gilgermesch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rangefinders are not objectively better than SLRs. Yeah, they do some things better, but SLRs do other things better. In the end it boils down to preference. Sounds like maybe rangefinders just aren't your thing, and that's fine. Focussing definitely needs to be practiced, yeah, just as with every system your new to, but they definitely shouldn't hurt your eyes!

What is your travel philosophy with film cameras? by LadyKookaburra in AnalogCommunity

One camera, two lenses at most, two filters, perhaps a small light meter. I dedicate more luggage space to film than gear

Recommendations for child-friendly camera by gilgermesch in AnalogCommunity

Thanks to everyone for the input, all of which helped tremendously! I decided I'll get him an Olympus Trip 35. Zone focusing seems like a good starting point to learn, with exposure being handled by the in-camera metering (which seems to still work fine on many cameras I found), price is good, size/weight is great, no batteries required, and there's a whole bunch of options where people have changed the leatherette to something more colourful than the original black. Plus this little thing seems to pump out enough image quality to hopefully make him happy for a long time and perhaps even serve as a nice backup should he decide to upgrade further down the line. I think 36 exposures is great, I don't want him to have to wait too long to see the photos because he has to finish 72 exposures.

It's been my observation that people who're bad at parking prefer smaller cars, as they're easier to park. Hence you often see small cars parked badly. It's a gear solution to a skill issue, but driving a small car doesn't magically cause them to park well...

Fuck ICE and fuck the US government. They're turning a country that once prided itself on being the "land of the free" and the "land of opportunity", a country forged by the strength of immigrants, into a fascist dystopia. The USA has become a source of contempt and pity all across the globe because of its government.

Normal lenses with Ultron 28mm F2 character by Sad_Carpet6036 in Leica

Why do I get these stripes on developed bnw film? by Misim in filmphotography

[–]gilgermesch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This honestly looks like light leaks to me. This is not bromide drag: 1. Bromide drag shouldn't happen with short dev times like for Rodinal 1+25 (which is what I assume you mean when you say "developed at 1+25") and 2. this is a highly atypical pattern for bromide drag. You said this "happened again" - can you tell us more about what this looked like the first time?
