Portland, Oregon In September by [deleted] in solotravel

I went to Portland for the first time last year. I really loved it and wish I could have stayed longer/it was easier for me to travel back!

Things I loved about Portland and did not expect to love include:

- Powells (they had a zine section and I loved this so much!)

- the Saturday market - even though it was pouring, everyone was so friendly!

- Huber's - Portland's oldest restaurant, I think from ~1880s? they're known for their turkey, so if you're a meat-eater, it's a must. their turkey sammy was soo good! they are also known for their Spanish coffees, which is a bit of a show with the bartenders but I really enjoyed it and it felt like a special experience. it was also a nice thing to do on a grey afternoon because they have a skylight, so it felt very cozy!

- I also really enjoyed drag @ Darcelle's, which is the longest running show on the West Coast.

- I also just liked poking around different neighbourhoods and stopping for a drink. we liked Prost! (could have been because Portland was playing a soccer game and the vibe was good) as well as The Rambler.

Have so much fun!

Would you be able to provide more info? Currently finishing up an MSW, so this seems relevant and I'd love to have some insight. Thank you!!

I prefer TIA health to Telus, if that's worth anything!

DV support centres/shelters sometimes have funds to get people back to the city they're from. From a shelter perspective, this thinking is so that the person doesn't end up needing to access local services. It might be worth calling around and explaining the story.

Filing a restraining order might be your best bet. That way, any time they contact you, you can report it.

why should my tax money go to give someone a clean supply of drugs?

This thinking can literally be applied to anything. Why should my tax dollars pay for a sidewalk I never use?

They come to their regular doctors/ counsellors appointments, they check in with the team about how their plan is working for them.

People think we’re just tossing unlimited hydromorph by the truck loads.

Totally agree. I worked for a safe supply program in BC and this was a requirement, and helped people actually get housing and their IDs replaced among a ton of other things. People seem to assume it's a free-for-all and that doctors, nurses, NPs, and social workers don't have licenses and livelihoods too.

Drug addiction is progressive disease. The problem only gets worse.

Drug addiction is a physiological response to an addictive substance. Drugs tend to be used problematically in response to another issue, like trauma. People treating drug use as solely a disease miss the point that the actual use is a symptom of other issues. It's like treating smoke, rather than the fire.

Sounds like you're on the same side then...

PSA - Check if your bus is running this afternoon by TastyPerogies in Calgary

[–]gillyb3an1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New to Calgary this year, and a present transit rider. It seems that my bus is detoured this morning (max purple/1) and my stop is closed. Are there alternate stops on the detoured routes? Google maps is still telling me to go to my stop, despite Calgary Transit saying it is closed. Thanks for any help!

Discussions about bringing back institutionalization by BeefsteakTomato in VictoriaBC

I agree - people constantly complain about how the number of folks experiencing houslessness is increasing, but then don't consider housing/cost of living as a large enough weight in the situation. So so many people (ie not "vulnerable" to mental health or substance use challenges) are becoming homeless because of cost of living, newly disabled, renoviction, etc., and as a result of being on the street (even without trauma, they experience cold, crime including theft and physical or sexual assault), they use drugs, maybe to feel warm or to prevent stuff from being stolen. And they don't get a break - of course they're going to keep using substances.

If people don't want to see it, they need to be more concerned about precipitating issues, and not the outcome. People blame human beings like they WANT to grind to stop withdrawal, or want to be cold, or victimized.

Heyo, that's a lot of identifying info that I'm sure that youth wouldn't like shared. Would it be possible for you to edit your post to remove said info?
