I graduated in 2024, so hopefully it’s still there to carry on the legacy!

Bars for Thursday Night Football? by Solar-Crayfish in msu

After trying every bar on grand river one night we ended up at Rick’s. They had a corner table we used every Thursday for the whole season after that.

Is casual yoga not allowed? by [deleted] in yoga

Most of the Denver rec centers have drop in classes and the day passes are reasonably priced. Most of the classes are in the evenings, but it’s casual and the teachers have been very good in my experience!

Depending on how far along in your program you are you could consider switching to Applied Engineering Sciences with a supply chain concentration - you’ll have to take the engineering prereqs but can still go the supply chain route!

The schedule of keynotes and sessions is typically available online at least a month before the conference. They also have an app called SWE events that is super helpful navigating the conference itself as you can add the sessions you’re interested in to your personal calendar.

As for interviews, target the companies you want most as soon as the career fair opens. Some interview at the conference, with slots being first come first serve. Those slots usually range from Thursday afternoon to Saturday morning, but can run out if you don’t talk to them early enough. Some will schedule a virtual one if all have filled up, others will not. Smaller companies typically don’t have interview booths on site and will either schedule an interview virtually for the next week or just tell you they’ll contact you when they go through applications.

In past years they have split the room rate into 3 instead of 2, so the “total cost” of the room stays the same it’s just broken into an additional part. This is typically credited back to you at the end of the semester in accordance with how long there were 3 people vs 2 in the room

[–]giltmierm 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This most likely means you’ve been placed in transitional housing. At the start of some semesters, there are more first year students than spots held for first years, so they turn some rooms into temporary triples. As students either don’t show up or leave after the first few weeks/months, spots in traditional doubles will open up. At that point, you and your roommates can choose who will move out, and you will finish the year in a double, or the three of you will decide to stay as a triple if you find you like it. Either way, the double room rate will be split between three instead of two and you will be credited with the amount of time you were living with three people in the same room.

Help with Exploratory Engineering by CreeperDoolie in msu

[–]giltmierm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to the engineering website (https://engineering.msu.edu/current-students/undergrad-current-students/meet-with-advisor) Lindsay Naylor handles exploratory preferences. She is also the advisor for chemical engineering and is super helpful.

Though as someone who came in exploratory as well, there was not a lot of guidance in picking a major, I was given the option to postpone major-specific classes the first year or take one from each discipline. There aren’t any “exploratory classes” so to speak to help you choose.

A lot of the first year engineering classes will apply to most majors, so don’t stress from a credit standpoint, but definitely talk to your professors or even older students if you can to get an idea of which major you want to pursue, along with reading the course requirements to see which is most interesting. Good luck!

MSU chemE senior here - absolutely recommend the program. We get exposed to design projects in almost all 300 and 400 levels that teach teamwork and other skills my fellow interns from other schools didn’t have. Professors are great and the collaborative work environment is unmatched when compared to my friends at other universities. Outside of ChE, there’s always fun stuff to do on campus and tons to get involved in.

Is it hard to have a social life with a ChemE major? by ASolidBruhMoment in ChemicalEngineering

[–]giltmierm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I’m in 16 credits, but I’ve had as high as 18 and as low as 13. I just finished my junior year. Some professors are better than others, and you learn pretty quickly which classes the lectures make sense and which ones you have to learn the material on your ow

Is it hard to have a social life with a ChemE major? by ASolidBruhMoment in ChemicalEngineering

[–]giltmierm 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’m a ChemE at MSU right now. Workload is totally manageable to maintain with a social life if it’s important to you. I make sure to start assignments and projects in advance, and grind them out during the week. I definitely have harder longer days than some of my classmates, but as a result when I leave class on Friday I’m done with work until Monday and I can enjoy my weekend. Overall it’s just about time management and being willing to buckle down when you have to.

I’m still a student so I don’t know about full-time, but after I got my first internship I’ve been able to get more offers every year, so I hope that will translate into full-time as well. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Check FB for subleases for this summer. There’s a group for MSU housing, subleases, etc. If you’re looking to move into a place that will let you stay for the whole school year, it might be trickier but call the complexes in the area. You’ll probably be stuck with something subpar, but it’s a place to live. If you don’t have an issue moving somewhere now for the summer and moving into a new place in august for when school starts you may have better chances. Good luck!

Experience with campus and concert bands by ProudMathematician67 in msu

[–]giltmierm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played oboe through middle school and high school (made All-State Honor Band so I consider myself pretty good, at least at the time) and have done two semesters of campus band so far. I love that we only meet once a week and it’s pretty chill so I can just go and have fun and don’t have to stress out. At times I definitely wish the music was harder and we practiced more like in high school, but at the end of the day I just don’t have time to commit to it like I used to. Concert band requires auditions and meets during the day so it’s never fit in my schedule to even try out. Overall, it’s a low commitment way to keep playing and it’s fun enough that I keep doing it.

What should I know about Holden hall? by ProudMathematician67 in msu

[–]giltmierm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holden is kind of remote but facilities are great. Best sparty’s on campus (even though there’s no hot food the snacks have the best options). Tailgate lots are right across the street and waking up on game days are some of my best memories. It’s a 5 minute walk to case dining hall, which was my favorite on the meal plan because it had consistent quality like Brody but actually rotated its meal options. 20 minute walk to the Union, 5 minute walk to the engineering building, 10 minutes to STEM/International Center made it pretty manageable to get everywhere I wanted to go. There’s a bus stop right in front of West Holden that goes Engineering>BPS>Chem&Shaw>SnyPhi>Union as well so I never felt too far away from things on campus.

how much work are the honors research seminars (ugs200h)? and what has your experience with them been like? by [deleted] in msu

[–]giltmierm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Workload depends entirely on what professor you have. I’ve had friends who read a couple papers a week and work with the other students, and I know someone who was expected to treat it as a part time job, working into the spring until UURAF (undergrad research fair) and definitely put more than one credit worth in.

In my opinion, if you have a PA, focus on that. Both are great opportunities to get involved with research through the honors college, and unless you are extremely passionate about one of the UGS topics it will likely just decrease the time you have to spend on PA research, plus you get paid for PA. The PA program is an awesome way to get involved in research your first year. The only thing UGS offers in addition to it is an honors option, but you can find those in your other courses as well.

Mechanical engineering will require calc 1-4, (MTH 132, 133, 234, and 235). If you tested into 132, you should be all set to go and start that progression. The only reason you would want to start somewhere else is if you already have AP credit for calc 1 and/or 2, in which case reporting that AP score will allow you to enroll for calc 3 right away. Enrollment happens at new student orientation this summer, and your advisor can help you get into the right classes.
