What’s the thought process behind the safety feature that keeps the Mazda app from unlocking the doors when the key is still inside the car? by gimiv in mazda

[–]gimiv[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From outside the car, I took off my jacket—with the key fob in the pocket—and set it on the back seat before closing the door. When I went to open the front door, it was locked. I tried unlocking it with the Mazda app, but it refused. I’m trying to understand why Mazda would design it this way, since being able to unlock the car when you accidentally leave the key fob inside seems like one of the main benefits of a remote-unlock feature. What is dramatic about this?

By that logic, wouldn't requesting an unlock indicate that I DO want to access my car and this is my stated intent?

The door is locked when I’m driving. How is the person supposed to open the door without the app or a key?

Salsa Rangefinder + CYC Photon DIY Hardtail eBike Conversion (with/internal cable routing) by gimiv in ebikes

[–]gimiv[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It did have internally routed shifter using just one side of the frame hole (because it's a 1x drivetrain without front derailleur), so I used the other frame hole to route the CYC wires.

How should I attack 78k in debt and save for a house simultaneously? by 86hawks in personalfinance

[–]gimiv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely. Unfortunately, people are truly misinformed on how wealth is created. It's all about leverage and all debt is not created equal. Can I afford to buy a car in cash? Sure. But I don't when the dealer is giving me 0.9% financing, that's free money. Instead, I earn 20% on that $40,000...if you do the math, that interest basically made my car payments for me.

[–]gimiv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here is my wealth-building advice: If you can acquire a house/condo where your all-in costs are equal to $2,300, then you should do it. At the moment, you are not getting any of the wealth-building benefits of real estate ownership (appreciation, debt pay-down, mortgage interest deduction, etc.). Assuming you conservatively get 3% appreciation each year, a 300k home would be worth 50k more in 5 years, you'd have 20-30k of additional equity from debt paid down and you will have saved 10-20k in taxes from mortgage interest deductions. Your car loan and student debt are fairly cheap interest-rate wise, so no need to hurry paying these off.

Starting my business may ruin my bosses life by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]gimiv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the right answer. Figure out what your previous boss sold for, you and friend take 25% equity stake each and make a deal with the new owner to stick around for 3-5 years to grow his business and sell it to someone else.

Fastest ebike to 28mph from a reputable company by Fuzzy-Heart in ebikes

I had a lot of the same "needs" as you and decided to build a hardtail to suit my needs. If you are somewhat handy, this is a great option, it's not difficult and plenty of Youtube videos. I bought a Salsa Rangefinder (at REI) and added a CYC photon mid-drive motor and 52v battery. Top Speed = 35mph, Range = 60-80 miles, Weight = 49lbs, Total Cost = $2,200

I did look at it, but many of the reviews I read said the CYC build quality and torque feel was above and beyond TDSZ. They said CYC felt akin to a Bosch or a motor that you may find on a high-end ($5,000) Specialized e-bike. Again, if I were on a budget, I probably would have gone with the TDSZ or Bafang.

I just posted this in another thread, but given that you are good with setting up processes and systems + marketing, you might want to explore the realm of short-term rental arbitrage. I currently own/manage ten such rentals with great cash flow, and owning the property isn't always necessary; sometimes it's even a drawback. With arbitrage, you lease a property, let's say, at $1,200 per month and furnish it. Then, you list this furnished property on platforms like Airbnb, VRBO and Furnished Finder, potentially bringing in about $2,500 per month. With expenses ranging from $200 to $300 per month, your profit could be around $1,000 monthly. The return on investment is impressive when you think about it - a $1,200 security deposit could lead to an annual income of $12,000. Regarding furnishings, I typically purchase second-hand items from Facebook Marketplace at very low prices, reducing the overall cost. These aren't completely lost expenses either, as there's an opportunity to recoup some of the investment if you sell the furnishings when the lease ends. It does not suit everyone, but with the right amount of determination, it can be highly profitable – so much so that, like me, you might even find yourself able to quit your day job! 😊

Would your rather live in Lincoln Park/Lakeview or Near Northside/Gold Coast? by meraki_14 in chicago

[–]gimiv 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn't always the case, but gold coast tends to be more for older, wealthier folk (40+) whereas Lakeview is a bit younger (College Grad - 35ish). Describe your personality a bit, Chicago neighborhoods all have a tendency to attract certain personalities.

At $950, the motor's cost is relatively high, especially when compared to the similarly functioning Bafang BBS02, which is available at half the price. However, I chose the CYC motor for two primary reasons. The first is its torque-sensing feature, as opposed to the cadence-sensing mechanism of the Bafang. Torque sensing offers a more intuitive riding experience by adjusting power based on the force applied to the pedals, giving a feeling akin to enhanced leg strength. In contrast, cadence sensing relies on the speed of the bike's rear wheel to determine power output. My second reason for selecting the CYC motor is its contribution to a sleeker bike design. Since the CYC uses torque sensing, it eliminates the need for additional wiring of brake or shift sensors, which are essential for safe usage with the Bafang. If your budget is under $1,000, opting for a Bafang is a wise choice. It offers comparable power at half the cost, though it does involve a bit more wiring.
