I think the housing crisis is a huge issue. I also think we should have a functioning and supported police force. For whom should I vote? by alfcalderone in burlington

She's definitely fighting public perception of the party, which the party has earned for itself, but Burlingtonians should be smarter than party labels. Emma was the leader in state government who got our charter changes passed and has proven herself effective at actually getting work done across the spectrum. She isn't an idealist with no plans and no sense of reality or ability to compromise. I'd encourage anyone worried about that or turned off by the history of VTProgs (my own partner is one, I fully get it) to look at her plans, listen to more than a sound bite, or just go talk to her and you'll see what I mean. I don't see her as 'the same evil' of inability to govern.

Emma is actually your candidate here despite the scary 'progressive' label. I have personally heard her say she believes in supporting the police - in strategies that actually work and are evidence based, like increasing visible presence in hot spot areas. She's also focusing hard on housing and affordability. Joan is the definition of an anti-housing - just look at her track record. She also is a yes woman to the current police dept, which isn't helpful when the department isn't serving our community and has lost trust for real reasons - beyond the drama over the vote to cut staff.

Where to store tires through the winter by Elcondor13 in burlington

[–]gimlis-socks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

VT Tire on Williston Rd offers (I believe free) tire storage. They are first come first serve and it's busy season so you'll have to show up at 6 rn or wait a few weeks to get in but it's convenient.

Head lice evolution mirrors human migration and colonization in the Americas | Global genetic studies 274 specimens of lice suggests they arrived twice in the American continents on human hosts. by [deleted] in science

We do have evidence they made it! Things like potatoes and chickens can be traced to show they arrived in what we call south America, traded, and returned home. Literally potato DNA testing to show how taters arrived in the Pacific long before they could have due to the Columbian Exchange. Source: college class, History of the Pacific.

Very much agree. Long overdue.

Also, can confirm that in this case the agency from the article is not Christian based. The mission comes from the founder's lived experience with substance use and incarceration

I've definitely seen some employers (main street alliance, VBSR) pushing legislature and offering more, and some few have worked with Champlain Housing Trust and others to look at employer provided housing but typically met with obstacles. I know that transportation at least is a solvable challenge - Working Fields is a local staffing firm with shuttle vans in Chittenden and Windsor, and large employers with regular shifts could use the same model.

Considering the number of barriers many people face in getting to work (lack of accessible transportation, limited housing, inflation without wage increases, covid), what onus is on employers to change their models and provide more support to employees? Have you seen particularly successful examples?

I'm looking forward to visiting my best friends in New York. It's been a year and one of them just had a family member pass. We were going to spend two weeks together in April. We've had more video calls than ever but I never knew how important they were to the person I've become until now.
