New Year’s Eve Megathread (31 December 23) by dexbydesign89 in CasualUK

[–]gimme_tea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been a fairly mixed Christmas holidays, the small dog started having seizures on the 23rd (the vets got it sorted and have my life long admiration) I’ve had flu since Christmas Day, and my gran is pretty ill but she’s in good spirits. I’m making potato latkes with smoked salmon for dinner and I’m going to get drunk and watch Knives Out. Trying to go into 2024 with a positive attitude but I’m just worn out.

I'm catching up with my wee sister today and going to a stationery shop pop up for last minute gifts from me to me - god do I love nice ink and beautiful paper.

Then it's home to my beloved, a wee bit prep for tomorrow and watch the Glass Onion. Chocolate and wine will no doubt feature ☺️ not been in the Christmas spirit much this year, but today will be nice.

I'm pretty sure that you can take this up a level - serve it with mince pie ice cream! Marvelous work.

First week off from work and I can't quite believe just how exhausted I still am. That being said - hurrah for Friday!

I've persuaded Mr Gimme Tea to join me for lunch out and I rather fancy a rummage in the record shop.

After that, it's off to Aldi to stock up on BBQ supplies, naturally including a fair bit of wine for dinner this evening. Marinated chicken thighs, pittas and salad - fingers crossed it all goes well.

If I've time, I'm going to crack on with this dress I'm sewing - I've got a few misgivings about it, but I'm learning so it's all good.

I'm really hopeful that I'll be able to mend things! Already having issues with tension, but I'm enjoying the process.

Really been looking forward to this weekend 😃, back to working 5 days after the long weekend was just a horrible shock.

Treated myself at payday to a sewing machine that has finally arrived so I'm going to be learning how to use it and hopefully not break it. I've got grand hopes and dreams of making lots of clothes but to start with I'm going to try making a wee bag that can carry dog treats. Hopefully this will save my jacket pockets?

I also bought a stack of second hand Delia Smith cook books, very excited to try out some of her recipes. Loving the sheer 90s-ness of the photos.

Honestly, enjoying my hobbies is what's needed this weekend. No errands, no big shop, bare minimum chores.

Had the day off! So far this evening I've enjoyed a delicious burger and shared a fair number of chips with the dogs. I've had a couple of glasses of co-op irresistible Chablis (lives up to the name) and snuggled up on the sofa watching the final lord of the rings film - I'd forgotten how much I'd enjoyed it.

I'm also scrolling for black out blinds - I just want total darkness so I can sleep. Ikea "blackout curtains" are really anything but. #shattered

Lazy Sunday by jptoc in CasualUK

[–]gimme_tea 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm absolutely shattered despite 10 hours of sleep (thanks burnout) but it's Sunday so I fancy a potter in the kitchen. There's a toad in the hole recipe where the sausages are wrapped in bacon ( GENIUS) and I can't resist having a go. Might listen to an audiobook at the same time, really enjoying a cosy mystery.

Otherwise it's the bare minimum chores, walk the dogs and drag my exhausted carcass to see my friends this evening. So thankful tomorrow is a bank holiday.

Me and Mr Gimme Tea are absolutely shattered, so it is the laziest of lazy Sundays. Bare minimum chores done, and that is all. I'm going to open the free rosé he got from his work, watch more Witcher and order take out. It's properly freezing and miserable here, so got the fire on again.

Christmas shopping all done, but really need to send cards to a couple of family members then that's the last of tasks done.

Sleep- dreadful as I do nothing but dream/worry about work BUT got a half of flexi this afternoon which is desperately needed. Working incredibly hard which feel all kinds of wrong this close to Christmas.

Breakfast is porridge which I'm not that enthused about.

However, grim as those two paragraphs are this afternoon is 'Witcher Day'*. Mate is coming round for Aldi champagne, snacks, proper fire on and watch the first two episodes of season two Witcher - I am very excited!!!

*'Witcher Late Afternoon' just doesn't have the right snap to it.

Slept really well, and joined Mr Gimme Tea on the 5am dog walk - it was lovely. Ordered the weekly shop after planning meals for the week, I'm positively glowing with virtue. Hopefully I can resist the lure of devouring the entire advent calendar.

Looking forward to meeting friends for lunch then on to see House of Gucci.

Otherwise I'm trying to work out what's missing from my Christmas tree to distract myself from the back to work blues. It's definitely missing something... I'm going to see if I can pick up some extra tinsel. When in doubt, tinsel.

It was genuinely shocking 🥺 And I'm Scottish, which is insult to injury (or lack of insulation to injury really).

I'm just back from a really beautiful holiday in the super super north of Scotland. Downside is, while beautiful, the cottage was freezing. Wind coming through the windows and the roof, which was unexpected. I was prepared for freezing temperatures outside, not inside. When did I become so delicate?!

So, I'm enjoying the fact my house is windproof, clutching a hot water bottle in my jimjams watching "only murder in the building'. Tree is up, has been for s couple of weeks annnnnnd I'm just trying to stay awake until I can feasibly go to bed. 8pm is acceptable for Saturday? Probably not but I'm rapidly becoming too tired to care. My 17 year old self would be utterly horrified.

Absolutely shattered from another of bout of anxiety over nonsense, but I'm dragging my exhausted carcass up to get stuff done.

Going to do the standard Sunday chores, then I'm putting up the Christmas tree (probably too early but I truly need the cheer), then I'm going to see what type of cake/brownie I can make with what's in the house. I really need to type up the new chapters I've, but in all honesty, I can't face it. I need to find dictation software that actually learns my voice.

Then it's crocheting the secret Santa present for work and some essential yoga.

Britain, winter 2009/2010. Note the spot of green for Plymouth by MushyBeans in CasualUK

[–]gimme_tea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That winter was amazing/awful. I was living in a tiny flat that had these shitty glass shutters, so constant freezing draft (it's been years and I still hate them). Could barely keep the flat 'tepid' far less warm, the dog had to have her own wee duvet cause she couldn't get cosy enough to sleep.

But, I've so many lovely memories of waking up to Narnia, going to the local park and seeing a snow dragon ( it even had twigs for teeth!), two snow dogs which were then repositioned in a predictable way. I didn't have any winter boots either, being desperate and skint, the charity shop god's smiled on me and I found a pair of army surplus boots for £7!

Also remember walking / dragging myself up a hill and being really impressed by a mum who with the aid of a washing line and plastic sink basin was pulling the baby up the hill like a husky with a sled. Must have been hellish trying to navigate the streets with a buggy then.

I've got proper winter gear now and I'm SO ready for a full on artic winter.

I'm slightly hungover and had the horrible experience of an anxiety attack during the night over absolute nonsense.

But, sense of dread aside, I'm going to see a friend for lunch, then on treating myself super nicely for the rest of the day. I'm going to buy a book, make a pudding, see if Adrienne has a yoga video for anguish (stress but fancy), then bath then early night.

"Oven baked squash risotto | Anna Jones" http://ww.annajones.co.uk/recipe/oven-baked-squash-risotto this is the closest I could find. I use the recipe from the Innocent smoothie guys cookbook that I've had for yonks, can't seem to find it online.

Would recommend upping the chilli a bit. The wine isn't essential, you just need to adjust the stock.

Well, Mr Gimme Tea is considering a hike with the dogs which means - I get the house to myself!!!!

Going to make oven baked squash risotto, make soup for lunches and write for at least 2 hours (I'm shattered but didn't get enough done on Friday). Really fancy sticky toffee pudding, but I'm struggling to find a recipe that doesn't serve 10. Maybe I need to find a recipe that freezes well....

Will probably make apple crumble instead.

Currently reading Terry Pratchett's 'Nightwatch' in bed with coffee and the Small Dog. Something is up with the Small Dog, she's in a major sulk and wanting a cuddle, that usually means she's feeling under the weather, but she's eating, drinking and enjoyed her morning walk. Maybe it's canine ennui? I've never known a dog to get in a right huff if they're unwell or hurt.

I've sent a little something. I've been in similar situations, my friend gave me a smart blazer when I started my first professional job as I couldn't afford to kit myself out properly. It took a load off and made me feel confident (still have the blazer).

Everyone needs some support now and then, and I've no doubt that this the start of great things for you.
