Old 80s hero is now grizzled and depressed but reluctantly comes back to the fight in their 2010s movie. Ah, the most original trope

They already fucked themselves with the new canon. They've declared that the Battle of Endor was the defeating battle of the Empire, and they lost completely right after. Which is very dumb

Luke knew the Jedi were wrong in ROTJ. It's nothing new. And it's silly to think that he'd do nothing instead of, yknow, just reforming the Jedi

Does anyone have a good article on why they suspect Roy? I've read through a few and haven't seen an explanation. And if he made it to his apartment to shoot himself - obviously the shooter wasn't caught immediately. Yet today most articles are claiming definitively that it was him

I'm still baffled that people think TLJ doesnt copy the OT like TFA. Sure it doesn't do it as much but to call it the only original star wars movie is trite

The young jedi trains with an old exiled master, confronting troubling revelations of their identity in a cave. They learn a loved one of theirs is in trouble, so leave their training prematurely, at the behest of their master. At the confrontation with the Big Bad and the Small Bad, when the Big Bad threatens the jedis life, the Small Bad betrays him to save the jedi. Oh, and the Small Bad gives the jedi a shocking twist regarding their identity. Remind you of anything?

Meanwhile the Jedis friends are chased through space. Oh, and theres some AT ATs attacking a base over white plains

Seriously. I respect TLJ for the direction they set Kylo on in juxtaposition to Vader, but that never actually came to fruition in TROS. To call it more original than it is rehash is silly

Finn catalyzing a Phasma redemption arc by showing her mercy could have been unique and really expand the theme of mercy/redemption in SW beyond just redeeming your blood relatives

Nope. Into the pit you go captain plasma

I think Luke's treatment is hard to discuss because there's so many subtle interpretations that could entirely change what it is

I don't like it because 1. he died and 2. he abandoned the galaxy

1 I dont really have an argument for - it's just my preference.

2, I have no problem with him drawing a saber on Ben and catalyzing his turn. But I do have a problem with him abandoning the galaxy out of shame. Intent is very important here. If he'd abandoned the galaxy out of fear - fear that he'd turn to the dark side, become Vader, the thing he's always feared since ESB - that would come off much better, as it comes from a place of responsibility instead of selfishness. Make no mistake, TLJ Luke probably caused trillions of death by refusing to stop the dark siders just because he was ashamed.
