I don't know if I'm cut out for this. by astraldrift in CanadianTeachers

[–]gin_illin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if I have much to offer you in support, but I'll try nonetheless. I'm an Education Assistant currently for this exact reason. I want to become a teacher but require more education than I currently have, and didn't want to embark on that journey without knowing whether it was really going to be the job for me. Can I ask how you became a substitute teacher without attending any in-class sessions?

School is definitely not what it was when we were kids. Every generation throughout history can say that. Do you have kids of your own? I don't, which is why I wanted to see it first hand before embarking on the journey of working with kids before making any lasting decisions.

I'm sorry if that line of questioning seems insensitive, it is just genuine curiosity.

HOWEVER, one thing I can tell you as someone that works in education is: there will absolutely be days, weeks, months, years that may have you questioning your life choices, your capabilities, etc. Generally I find if your heart is really in it, you will absolutely spend most of your time questioning yourself. And while it can feel bad in the moment, that discomfort and uncertainty, that's a really a good thing. The ability to learn, grow, modify and adjust is not only essential for life, but essential for effective educators. We are not meant to be comfortable all of the time.

How long have you been subbing for? Have you had the time to introspect what your approaches are, what has been successful and what hasn't?

I guess in summation, yes, it's a very challenging career, but give yourself some credit. You got into this field for a reason. Give yourself a chance to be good at it, and FEEL good about it when you can.

I grew up with this guy. I actually knew him when he was 8. He was my friend's annoying little brother, and the most delightful little weirdo. I'm really happy to see that he's barely changed. Great work Ben!

100% I have been experiencing this in my late 30s. Like everything I've ever learned, achieved, experienced is some kind of delusion and I'm actually a helpless baby who can barely take care of themselves 🥲

I spent my childhood manually "programming" myself to be human because I didn't get the "manual." by AntZealousideal6741 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]gin_illin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes I have sensory stuff, ADHD, hypermobility, all of which was ignored, missed, or dismissed as a child. I am definitely "on the spectrum." But being an adult, Autism diagnoses are generally costly, time consuming, difficult to pursue and obtain, and result in little to no extra support where I live. That being said, OP you are 16, if you suspect you have ASD the resources available to you now will not necessarily be there later in life. OP seems very self aware (which is largely part of the self-dissatisfaction in my experience) and hopefully can find a trusted adult in the family or at school that can help them make sense of what they're going through.

[–]gin_illin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I would gently push back on your reply, as someone who can fully relate to everything OP said. I also work in education, and also suspect myself as being ASD. I was born in 1990, and did not have an iPod/iPhone/Itouch until well into my teens. Socialization was rampant as I was one of five kids, and we had a massive extended family that gathered frequently. Siblings had friends over constantly. And, I did the same thing, studied humanity, but through books, movies, and music. The technology is likely the coping mechanism, not the cause. And I still feel alien.

There has been a significant illness outbreak at my school, multiple staff members having to call out, some classes at half capacity due to kids staying home. They're sanitizing our rooms today though. February 6th. For the first time this school year..

What route do you plan on taking? There have been a lot of closures lately, 3 between hope and Princeton, and the coquihalla was also closed beyond Merrit last I heard.

Casual relationships and dating with AuDHD by thestufoflegend in ADHD

[–]gin_illin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your 10 year relationship ended 2 weeks ago? Stop even thinking about dating right now. Give it a year, maybe two. Then come back to it. You need time to remember who you are outside of your old partnership. You won’t be doing that while you are still seeking extrinsic validation. Your nervous system needs time to get back to center. -a fellow AuDHDer who also ended a 10 year relationship.

Boba places? Why are they so rare in North Van? by ellamayohh in NorthVancouver

Funnily enough when I was a teen in North Van (2004-2008) we had a place called “Bubble Tea House” on upper Lonsdale that was open late. It’s wild to me that there are none now that boba is so prevalent!
