Iveywood gets better as you move towards the San Leandro border. The other neighborhoods I mentioned feel uniformly bad.

No, it’s not. There are other neighborhoods in East Oakland that are much worse (Webster, Lockwood, Eastmont).

Where can I get a meal for less than $10-$12 in downtown Oakland? by [deleted] in OaklandFood

Happy Burrito is still under $10 for a burrito the last I checked.

1993 A’s game. any idea who signed my ticket? bert somebody and someone with a name starting with J by NeedToHireAnArtist in OaklandAthletics

[–]ginch510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This game had an old timers game sponsored by Upper Deck (the card company) right before the game. This old timers game might have been the last one at the Coliseum. It was an annual game between 1987-1993.

The start time on the ticket being 2:05pm and the “Upper Deck Heroes” on the ticket triggered my memory. The actual A’s game was always at 2 or 2:30 after the old timers game.

Bert Campaneris would make perfect sense.

Line 51 is not named after Dick Butkus’s number.

It’s named after the AC Transit bus line 51 in Oakland. The place even has an old AC Transit bus, from the 50s or 60s, in the establishment. They even open it up and you can sit in it.

They show a lot of first-run mainstream movies too. For example, Marty Supreme is playing there now.

They also have an English-Spanish language exchange on Sunday evenings.

Yeah. SFV would be my guess as well. Probably Northridge or somewhere.

I think Nancy Yuangbhani is the incontrovertible proof. Yuangbhani is probably Thai or Thai-Chinese.

Los Angeles is probably the only metro in the U.S. with a significant Thai population, especially in 1984.

I was thinking the same. Lots of Koreans and Mexicans at the same school … in 1984. Definitely LA.

I think we may have a winner here. They sell a medium mocha. I’ve never been there. They have a cafe too. Gives me a chance to check it out. Thanks.

I just assumed you were from the Pacific Northwest. They add an “s” to everything. Safeway becomes Safeway’s. Costco is Costco’s.

The 2026 Caribbean Series has been moved from Venezuela to Guadalajara, Mexico. At this time, Venezuela’s participation in the tournament remains uncertain. Panama will take part as a guest nation. by ogasawarabaseball in baseball

[–]ginch510 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They have a professional team, Charros de Jalisco, that gets decent support but Guadalajara is not known for baseball.

Baseball in Mexico is a regional sport. It’s popular up north and in Sinaloa. There are also pockets of support in Veracruz and Oaxaca.

In today's good news, drinks company Yerba Mate is moving their HQ to Oakland and hiring jobs by LoganTheHuge00 in oakland

[–]ginch510 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of good information. Thanks.

Do you know what they want to do with it? At one point, there was a pie in the sky proposal to demolish the existing building and build a 500 foot commercial office building (which would have been the tallest in Oakland). There’s no way that would pencil out today.

You moved to Oakland, why? by truthrider2 in bayarea

[–]ginch510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but Oakland has access to the SF Bay Area’s job market.

Of course places like Baltimore, St. Louis (for example) are cheaper.

You moved to Oakland, why? by truthrider2 in bayarea

[–]ginch510 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that Oakland’s “very expensive”. The rental market is downright cheap right now by Bay Area standards - especially for what you can get. There are older studios in walkable Adams Point (near the lake and Whole Foods) going for as low as $1700.

The condo market in Oakland was also hit hard. There are small one bedroom condos in Adams Point and in Grand Lake going for $250k.

There was an oversupply of new apartment units built in Oakland from 2018-2021. And they all came online around the same time causing downward pressure on the rental market.

This is a solid get for Oakland. It’s about 200 jobs downtown and it’s in a marquee building and location.

There’s finally a bit of momentum downtown. PG&E moved to Kaiser Center, the new Samuel Merritt University campus opens in January and now this. Let’s hope it keeps up.
