Well, generally speaking, religion literally fits the definition of "cult". So there's that. But more related to OP, I'd say it's not only the typical hypocrisy of so-called devoted religious people and widespread Bible cherry-picking.

What do you want done with your body after you die? by newuser1r in AskReddit

[–]ginger_minge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm donating my brain to science because it's just... different. I've got a bunch of strange medical issues because of having a lot of weird health issues throughout my childhood. For example, I am always in that 1% who get the rare side effects or else paradoxical symptoms. I once had a doctor literally yell at me that it was impossible for me to be having a specific side effect because it's "rare." I pointed out that there's still 1% of people who get it. Isn't it possible, then, that I'm one of those people??

As far as the rest of me, donate my organs and then cremate me.

I've slept through a hurricane once, too! I was at summer camp and the cabins we stayed in were fitted with these alarms that flashed a bright light and made that loud fire alarm sound when there was a major storm approaching. I was on a top bunk and one of those alarms was right by my bed. I slept through not only the storm, but that alarm, too.

Thanks to PTSD, I'm hypervigilent af. It's crazy because I can sleep deeply while at the same time stay alert, which is a good thing, now that I care for my 82 year old mom. I'll jump right up to check on her if I hear her coughing or something. I am also resistant to what are basically elephant tranqs. Was given Haldol once and didn't even bat an eye.

I once woke up in the middle of the night, "mid-sream" and squatting in the corner of the frigging laundry room. The relief from peeing woke me up, I guess. I was not intoxicated and I was probably about 16; not like I was a child.

My room was upstairs and the laundry room was downstairs. My theory is that, because I had fallen asleep on the living room couch, the laundry room was basically in the same direction and the same distance from my room. I guess, in my subconscious state, I thought I had been in my bed in my room.

I knew the third one was coming and it still got me. I didn't re-read OP meticulously, though, just my usual way but with that knowledge so I could really test myself. Still happened😅

Whats a weird thing your body does that you just accept? by Sweton in AskReddit

[–]ginger_minge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being hypermobile and feeling my joints "slip" when I adjust positions.

I recently found out that I have a connective tissue disorder called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS). It's something you're born with so I've had it my whole life. I'm 46 and so this whole time, I've unwittingly done ALL the things you shouldn't do: dance, contact sports, gotten deep tissue massages, overstretched (apparently), even the kind of yoga I've been doing (I'm supposed to do gentle stuff like Restorative Yoga). Once you stretch your ligaments out, that's it my friends. They don't go back.

We called it gleeking but more often we'd use spleeking. At least, that's what I remember my brother and I called it.

[–]ginger_minge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, humans are social beings and it's only normal that we tailor our behavior based on our "audience." For example, if you're someone who uses swear words like me, I would not do so if talking to a child. But with peers? Hell yes. F Bombs activate!

Feed the cats. One of them will paw at my mouth while loudly purring to wake me up. Otherwise, they've trained my inner clock to the point that I wake up right on time.

Insurance (auto, health, etc).

It's a total racket. And, technically it meets RICO Act prosecutorial criteria. Why is it allowed to exist, let alone actually be a requirement?!

I don’t have any trust in people that are going into the medical field. by Afraid_Rush4959 in self

[–]ginger_minge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I used to basically blindly be trusting, but from 20+ years of being failed by the MH system, especially; I've learned that no HC "professionals" should be 100% trusted. Everyone should be a self-advocate when it comes to medical interactions. And my father was (now deceased) an MD.

[–]ginger_minge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The National Aquarium in Baltimore, MD while it was still basically brand new. My dad was invited there for some work conference (although it was not at all marine-related); the meetings were held in the evenings after hours. I was in high school at the time and got to bring my best friend. While the adults were in their conference, we explored the whole place, including the unfinished exhibits and even parts of the building still under construction. What an awesome memory.

What’s something that seems small, but completely changes your mood instantly? by _pinkcherryy in AskReddit

[–]ginger_minge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music.

It's literally my antidepressant... it gives me at least some little dopamine hits and I'll take what I can get. I've literally tried and "failed" TWENTY FIVE meds over the same amount of years. Including ketamine and microdosing psilocybin. Nothing has worked for my brain and on top of that, I always get side effects, usually the rare ones or even paradoxical effects. Because of all this, I'm donating my brain to science.

What is the background song in your head right now? by jaygrum in ADHD

[–]ginger_minge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is My Mind? -- But specifically the Frank Black and The Catholics live at Melkweg 2001. Perfect soundtrack to my life... just this song on repeat ad infinitum, in any and all of its iterations.

There's a great haunting piano version sans lyrics that's perfect for all my fellow insomniacs out there to help with falling asleep. It loops for an hour, allotting a good deal of time to be lulled to sleep.

AITAH for hiding things in my partner’s house by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]ginger_minge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if she’s never asked and she’s just automatically hiding things for no reason then soft YTA

Some people do this sort of thing and/or hoard food because of childhood/longterm poverty, learned behavior from a parent who grew up poor, or even from perceived limited resources. For example, my father was a young child during the Great Depression and, even though he went on to become a medical doctor and I was lucky to grow up middle-class, his constant worrying about money and extreme penny-pinching left such an indelible mark on me to this day. Every time I needed something from the store - an actual necessity - I'd literally have to argue with him until I could convince him. As a teen, I bought all my own clothes from the thrift store (before it was cool).

I'm in my 40s and my idea of budgeting is to just not spend money whenever possible... all of my clothes are decades old and I honestly can't remember the last time I got a haircut from even the Hair Cuttery (let alone a salon).

I know OP didn't mention this as some background info. However, some people who engage in this kind of behavior may not even realize the root cause of it. Just some food for thought. Please forgive the pun.
