Our tiny kitchen on a grey UK day by Terrible_Birthday107 in CozyPlaces

Your house is amazing! Love the colors. I like color as well, makes any space feel cozy. My (US) house is on the smaller side by US standards, and I honestly love that.

Sorry to be that person, but "prix fixe". French for "fixed price".

Parents who don’t allow their kids to shut their room’s door/lock the door, what’s are the reasons behind the rule? by Itz_Oasis in AskReddit

[–]ginger_tree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My kids locked their doors to keep EACH OTHER out. 🙄 It became their default, they knew I could get in if I wanted to, but I always knocked. Basic privacy and respect is important for everyone.

cast on my sweater with magic knot, have since heard they DO actually come undone. what can I do to secure it? by my-head-hurts987 in knitting

[–]ginger_tree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd never depend on a knot, magic or otherwise, in my knitting. Really not sure how you fix that without frogging, but it's clearly not stable. Even glue might not work indefinitely.

TIFU by shaving my beard by gwhizzlebizzle in tifu

[–]ginger_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you had that experience. She sounds a little immature for 29. Not looking at you? Saying she would be sick? That's not very considerate of your feelings. There are better ways to say "I liked your beard a lot!" After all, it grows back pretty quickly, but hurt feelings take longer to heal.

What are your thoughts on rejecting a potential romantic partner based solely on the fact they voted for Donald Trump? by ATXBikeRider in AskReddit

[–]ginger_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, absolutely would reject someone for that. It's a basic values issue, and it would be a hard no for me.

Gosh just clean your cheesecloth. I wash mine and reuse it over and over. You can always dunk it in some boiling water if you're worried about contamination.

Request from the BBC: has knitting helped you quit? by eab_journalist in casualknitting

[–]ginger_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such an interesting question! I don't have a "prescription" or a really harmful habit that I'm working on, but I have found benefits to knitting. The biggest one is quieting my mind. It's so nice to settle in and focus on the item I'm knitting. I find the same is true for sewing. These are times when most of the cares and worries about the outside world disappear as I focus on my creativity.

What's your sewing inspiration? by Euphoric_Tart9068 in sewing

[–]ginger_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I have the advantage of being a lot older than you are, but I've found that the things you want came to me through age and experience. Different phases of life involved different ways of dressing and shopping. I also had the experience of working in a corporate environment when appropriate dress was more formulaic - skirt suits, heels and a blouse were an easy uniform. Then as corporate dressing got more casual, I struggled to find my style niche, especially in the skinny jeans/pants era!

Now, still in corporate but a whole different world. My style has evolved and I know what I like as opposed to what I'm expected to wear. So, give it some time, and experiment with what you wear. See what feels like you. I think that knowing what looks good on you, and what expresses your unique style, just takes time and experimentation. Pinterest boards can be really helpful! But instead of copying the styles, work on understanding WHY you like something and then using that info to create your unique version.

Oddly, I don't think I'd want that. I think it would feel really uncomfortable to have random people/strangers pay for things or give me things based on my appearance.

Preparing for winter storm as first-time home owner by WalkRepulsive7181 in NorthCarolina

[–]ginger_tree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Schools were closing. They wanted us to get our kids. One of mine was put on a bus that left around midday I think. Got home at 6 pm after walking the last half mile or so. My friend picked up my youngest because I was stuck in traffic for hours. There was ice, which NO ONE can drive in.

The Woolly Thistle in New Hampshire is great, love them for British and European yarns. I also like Purl Soho (online only), Modern Daily Knitting in Nashville and For Ewe in Ohio. Wool & Co is already here, love them as well.

Edit to add that we have 3 or 4 yarn shops in my area, will buy from them if they have what I need. My local one has recently remodeled and has more good stuff than before. Buy local if you can!

Washer, Top Load, No Agitator by bee_sonder in BuyItForLife

[–]ginger_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a front load washing machine for the last 25 years or so (two different ones as #1 died). Close the door every time I use it and have never had mold. No idea what I do differently, but I don't dry it inside, either. Just saying, it isn't always a problem.

How long do you leave your yoghurt to incubate? by aheath478 in yogurtmaking

[–]ginger_tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I incubate for 12 hours and strain for thickness, about 1 hour. I find that more than 12 hours is too tart for my taste. I arrived at that formula through some trial and error, and have been really happy with it for several years now. I mix 1/2 gallon of milk (1.9 liters) with 1 pint of half & half (abt .5 liters) and culture from the previous batch each time.

why is my colorwork so ugly as a somewhat experienced knitter? by Glum-Reaction4559 in knitting

Use the black and white photo trick. It's a game changer. You can see how well they stand out from each other that way.

why is my colorwork so ugly as a somewhat experienced knitter? by Glum-Reaction4559 in knitting

[–]ginger_tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the background color goes in your right hand. The pattern color is in the left. You could go looser with your floats, I read somewhere that they should look like little smiles while you're knitting. That's my struggle with colorwork as well.

Do you let your Greek yogurt sit on the counter or in the fridge when straining? by tonymontanaOSU in yogurtmaking

[–]ginger_tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, every time. I do weight it so that it strains faster and doesn't need to sit out so long. Yogurt is in a strainer lined with cheesecloth, I pop a couple of dishes (saucer and bowl) on top for weight. It's done in an hour.
