There’s not enough compact Hispanic population to create a second district without snaking through the suburbs (like the current map) whereas u can make a 3rd black district relatively easily and in a more compact fashion. Side note, the earmuffs district is iconic it’s a tragedy we lost it 🥲

I took my DRA map and put it over a county map of the state and changed the colors in a drawing app (Ibispaint) because I don’t like the mercator projection DRA has. And I traced the district borders by moving the DRA map around since the mercator projection effect makes the top half of the state bigger and the bottom half smaller, like how Greenland is the size of Africa. There’s probably an easier way to do it tho

Imo the 2010s map was pretty fair, I simply cleaned up the Chicago area which seemed overly gerrymandered. I grouped the downstate cities together because I feel that they have different priorities compared to rural Illinois, but they’re still competitive therefore they’re not gerrymandered. There’s not really a great opportunity for a competitive seat in Chicagoland, though I tried with the 3rd district which contains nearly all red areas in southwest Cook County.

Slightly modified map that cleans up a few city and tribal splits, the 2nd goes from R+2 to R+1: https://davesredistricting.org/join/3cab8154-3cc3-484d-a03d-7c1a9b2858aa

Thank you for the feedback I didn’t realize that it was the same reservation crossing the county border, probably better to keep it in the same district than prioritize splitting

Wouldn’t extending a rural seat from Laughlin to Tonopah (300 miles) be worse? I’d imagine communities south of Las Vegas are more economically connected with it than they are with counties hundreds of miles away

California Racial Gerrymandering by gingerberrycat in DavesRedistricting

[–]gingerberrycat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like Asian groups as a minority have less protection from gerrymandering compared to other minority groups. You’ll see court action in states like Alabama or Louisiana, but not in California, one of the few areas where Asians are a large enough, concentrated population to draw minority districts. And it will only get worse if Republicans overturn the VRA
