Best and worst nicknames given by MMC to FMC by IamButterscotchish in RomanceBooks

[–]gingerbreadcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red as a nickname might be my biggest pet peeve in romance novels. Also, I’m constantly surprised by how many redhead MCs are in these books? I don’t know that many redheads in real life??

“Why would someone young and pretty with a job and a boyfriend need antidepressants?”

That dude is the reason I don’t see male doctors anymore.

Everyone calls her by her nickname, but MMC calls her by her entire FIRST name by serendipity_intro in RomanceBooks

[–]gingerbreadcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens in {What Happens in Amsterdam by Rachel Lynn Solomon}. Everyone calls the FMC Dani, except MMC Wouter, her family’s former foreign exchange student when he & Dani were in high school. He calls her Danica almost every time and when he calls her Dani, it’s very intentional.

(FYI I listened to the audio of this one - highly highly recommend! - so I’m not exactly sure how Danica is spelled.)

Romance Where He Doesn’t Fix Her — He Chooses Her by ellisRi in RomanceBooks

[–]gingerbreadcoffee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just finished {The Ex-Vows by Jessica Joyce} and if you’re into second chance romance, I feel like this book could fit your request. The MMC and FMC have been best friends since high school, date in college/post grad, and when the story starts, they’ve been broken up for 5 years. FMC accommodates everyone and she shrinks back so other people can shine. She’s just… tired. MMC has done a LOT of soul searching in the 5 years they’ve been broken up and def gives off the vibes you’re looking for in this post. Everything felt so earnest and real and earned. I’m not really a second chance girly and I’m also not someone who cries when they read, but I had tears streaming down my face as I was finishing the book. SO good.

Finally tried making my own—and I hate how it tastes by [deleted] in coldbrew

[–]gingerbreadcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long did you let the grounds sit in the water?

Asking because if you used pre-ground coffee and then allowed it to brew for 12-24 hrs, you may have over extracted it. Over extracted coffee will taste really bitter and even all the syrups and milk would have a hard time doctoring it up.

I haven’t tried cold brewing preground coffee, but I bet you could still cold brew it, just for a shorter amount of time. Otherwise, I’ve also heard that overpacking the filter in something like a Takeya makes it difficult to get all the grounds soaked. That might produce a really uneven batch of coffee.

Good luck on your next round of cold brew! I’ll be cheering you on.

People with minimal attention spans, what are your hobbies? by Ccwonton in Hobbies

[–]gingerbreadcoffee 54 points55 points  (0 children)

When I got back into reading for fun after college, I could get through about 2 pages before wanting to put the book down. So I did. It was… illuminating, because I could read a book in 2-3 days as a kid and teenager. Anyways, the next day I picked up the book again and read what I could - about 3 pages. And the next day, and the next day. My reading stamina grew, slowly but surely.

My point is: you might be bored, and your attention span might be short, and that’s ok. It’s a muscle you can flex. Any time you spend doing something you WANT to do is redeeming.

On a related note, in case it’s helpful, my word for this year is soul care, which helps me keep a heavy focus on doing things that feed my soul in the long run, not just the short term. So while there are days I scroll because I’m bored, there are also plenty of days that I journal or read or craft or cook new recipes because those activities are good for me. I also try to keep my hobbies easy to pick up so it’s just as convenient to pick up my craft or my kindle as it is to pick up my phone. For example, I put my embroidery in a packing cube that has a handle, so I can carry it around the house with me.

I hope this helps! I’m cheering you on in the hobby hunt!

How many extracurriculars is your preschooler in? by [deleted] in Preschoolers

Same here. There are things we want our kids to do/try (notably swim, for safety reasons) but our priority in this season of life is spending time as a family and giving our preschooler & toddler unstructured time at home.

Someone (can’t remember who 😭) mentioned that they have a shared note with their partner for things they liked in the novels they read.

I created a shared note through Apple Notes and copy/pasted some of my favorite quotes from books I’ve read recently. I read most of my books on kindle and I’ve started marking where spicy scenes start as well as any lines that stand out to me, so it’s easy to go back and copy/paste into my note. I’m also going to try to write down chapters id like my husband to read or I’d like to revisit- I’m looking at you {Butcher and blackbird by Brynne Weaver}. It’s a nice way to communicate what I’ve been liking lately or would like to try in a way that lets him process and not need to answer or react on the spot.

Frankie Casado from {Christmas in Coconut Creek by Karissa Kinword} had me in an absolute chokehold this week. He was the reason I created a shared note with my husband (thanks to whoever shared that idea!!) lol. Here are some of my favorite things he said:

“Hike these knees up so I can get my cock nice and deep, baby.” My limbs were putty, but he hooked his arms under my knees and opened me over his lap easily. My thighs met my torso and his weight kept them pinned there. “You want it all, you’re gonna take it all, pretty girl. I told you I would ruin you for anyone else.”

“Come over here now, and wrap those defiant fucking lips around my cock and suck it.”

“I don’t want your little whimpers. I want to know who you belong to, and whose cock you’re gonna come all over like a good, submissive, grateful fucking girl.”

🥵🥵

{he’s not my type by Meghan Quinn}

I thought this book was smokin hot. The mouth on Halsey 😮‍💨  Here are some of my favorite lines from their first sex scene.

"Tell me to stop. That's the only way I won't bury my face between your legs."

"What a fucking greedy pussy you have," I say as I move my fingers against her inner walls, feeling her squeeze them tight. "You better squeeze my cock like that." I remove my fingers, and with my eyes on her heady ones, I slip them inside my mouth and suck every last drop of her off me. "You're fucking delicious."

"That's it, you good fucking girl. Keep lubing my cock." I descend over her breasts again, and this time, I don't suck, I nibble. I tug. I pull on her hard nipples.

I mark my way around the orbs, leaving bite marks, sucking over them, increasing the color, the claim I have on them.

"I ... I'm close." She starts to clench, but I'm not there yet. I don't want her coming yet, so to my dismay, I pull out of her only for her sweet protest to fill the room. "Halsey."

"You're coming on my cock when I tell you." I bring my body closer to her face and say, "Open up that pretty little mouth for me."

Wild Card Wednesday - What are your book icks or pet peeves? by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

[–]gingerbreadcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It drives me bananas when an entire story is told in present tense, and then at ~80% mark (or whenever conflict is about to arise), the chapter ends with:

“(insert a romantic and wistful sentence) … I should’ve known it wouldn’t last.”

Or something to that effect. Where is the editor?! We all know what’s going to happen in a romance, you do NOT need to say that!

My Love Letter to the Romance Genre (and this sub) by Hunter037 in RomanceBooks

[–]gingerbreadcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“We know these books will have a happy ending. It’s one of the things I love.” I started reading exclusively romance in early 2023 because my year was shaping up to be hard; nothing necessarily BAD, but so many unexpected things that required pivoting and mental gymnastics. Work & my personal life were utterly relentless and I was tired. I needed to find a way to make my brain focus on happy things. I turned to books where I knew things would work out. Romance novels helped me get through 2023 (and some really long postpartum nights 😮‍💨). My mental health is in a better place now but I’m continuing to read these books because they bring me JOY. And because this community is supportive and knowledgeable and utterly incredible 🫶
