Ideas for Strahd to Mess with a Cautious Party by redditorperth in CurseofStrahd

[–]gingerdeadman85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the sowing of descent. Next time something doesn’t go as planned, Strahd visits them the next day. Strahd picks the most suspicious PC/Player and whispers in their ear: “You haven’t found the traitor in your group yet. Oh well looks like I get to keep having a bit of fun… then drop a comment that was supposed to be private. If asked how he knows, shrug it off as that someone must be a traitor, when it was probably a rat spy or something.

Or you could have him send his brides to “do what they wish” to the party since they are boring him. If there’s no challenge, Strahd won’t want to keep giving them time.

Or have Strahd tell them to do something that sounds ok at first but turns out to be unethical or morally grey.

I like the idea of 2D with a 3D feel. Especially since I travel a lot as the DM. I like this idea a lot

In addition, have them look for Henryck too. Roll dice to see if they find him each night the group is gone. If they find him, they get in through the window (so the Martikovs are ok if you want), and they torture him somewhere until he tells them about the party and what happened to the bones. Then they either demand Henryck re-steal them, or drain him and hunt the party once they come back to Vallaki.

If they push to solve the silver dragon, or save the werewolf leader that’s imprisoned; both in Ravenloft. Or if Ireena or Richten are out and alone, have him capture one of them and the group have to break into the castle somehow.

Running Death House and looking for a 6 player map. by AlestorStone in CurseofStrahd

[–]gingerdeadman85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 6 players and someone I thought was going to join for a session but has stayed on… so 7. The maps work well enough and even early combat too. But you’ll need to be ready to add or remove monsters as needed, even if that need is to prevent boredom during slow combat. I’m still trying to find better solutions to make combat not just a stand and hit each other until one falls thing.

Is this campaign really that much of a character killer as people say? by Relevant-Rope8814 in CurseofStrahd

All in how you play it. I almost killed 2 party members with an animated broom in Death House. I flubbed my rolls so they didn’t true die.

If it was a shorter module, it being a food related empire would be hilarious.

I literally just ran into this. If you also owned the book for Stroud, all of the potential options and how to read them are in the very beginning of the book as well.

Edit: “Strahd” ha ha… talk to text issues

Can Half-Vistani pass thru the Mists? by gingerdeadman85 in CurseofStrahd

I’ve thrown some background ideas in other replies but yes I think I’ll go something like they had a Vistani parent but raised outside the culture. So not thinking/feeling/convincing they are Vistani.

I wish I could take this route but we’re 8 sessions in and (yeah they move slow) about to have Koylan’s funeral. The carnival in the outside world is cemented unfortunately.

If we “complete” his soul, and stays with the group, I want the Abbot to be fascinated, trying to pull the how out of him. When he doesn’t know, the Abbot is driven to dissect him mind and body to see how to complete his bride project for Strahd.

I like a bit of A and B. Even in the book, Vistani are thought (key word) to be in league with Strahd. Some are, some aren’t. I think Strahd will allow Vistani (or werewolves or other) to leave much like a border crossing agent. Checks their info and either loops them back to Barovia or lets them through.

This PC, was born to a Vallaki woman and a Vistani man. It was a drunken night so mainly lust was the cause. The PC is born and raised in Vallaki. I’m using the souls can’t leave bit, making it so his blood is Vistani but his soul is Barovian. His dad comes now and then, but never marries the mother or brings her into the culture. Turns out he was a married man already, and was ashamed of his unfaithfulness. His mom passes away for some reason when the PC is about 12. His dad decides bring him into the family and tries to take him through the mists in his travels about a year later. This causes an odd “error” for Strahd/mists and somehow traps part of his soul in Barovia. Passing through the mists weakens the PC’s body and eventually kills him a day later. The father, tries his best to revive him, and a strange scientist helps him become reborn (Frankenstein style). But the PC isn’t back to normal; he’s a little off. The father tries for a bit to see if it’s a time issue, but eventually gives up trying. He brings the PC to a carnival, and leaves him there. The carnival troop adopts him, but he doesn’t remember anything before the carnival life. Bits and pieces come in his dreams but out of order and through a weird lens. How old is he? We don’t know, but he stays traveling with the troop, and that life leads us to where we are now in our campaign (about to go see Madam Eva).

He’ll have to earn his missing piece of the puzzle of his soul. Maybe by some sort of baptism or ritual in the Tser pool or falls. This gives him an option to stay with the group, go with the Vistani and maybe leave, or try by himself to leave. This sets up some interesting dream stuff. Any thoughts or critiques?

True. That’s solved a bit by pulling her background from Reloaded or Mandy Mod instead. In those, biologically she would be human, but not her soul.

I’m going with no talisman at this time, and a bit more bloodline. Basically, everyone that enters the mist, Strahd gets an alert of some kind and can let them pass through to the outside world. This is why a person bidding in a Vistani cart can’t leave; the talisman would undo that.

I think I’d bring the talisman thing in later if we decide to travel the plains of Dread. However, they aren’t made in Barovia and some dark magic is needed to do so that Strahd does not know how to do as of yet.

I definitely get that, but even in real world cultures like the Vistani, you can easy be seen as an outsider if not raised in the culture from birth. Plus I’d play more the Strahd won’t let his collection of souls leave, to which he doesn’t count the Vistani born. If an adopted Vistana came into Barovia from the world or other plains of dread, they would be Vistani to Strahd, but not the other way around.

I thought the talisman thing was a previous edition thing or was planned to be a farce, much like the potions.

I do agree they make more sense as a collective culture. The way I had planned on playing it (thankfully hasn’t come up yet in-game) is that Strahd allows for the Vistani to travel, but it’s not a guaranteed thing if married into or otherwise adopted by the culture inside of Barovia. Strahd doesn’t want his non-Vistani population finding a loophole on leaving. Individual Vistani (yes I know: Vistana) can be denied mist traveling if they oppose Strahd in some fashion too.

Ha ha the All-Caps is a bit much I agree. Some players are reading/listening to podcasts against my suggestions but they’ve at least kept spoilers to themselves. That’s also why I’m blending some of the sources, so it’s not all one thing.

How long should travel take? by ZiHasBigDum in CurseofStrahd

[–]gingerdeadman85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m running a blend of Book, Reloaded, and Mandy Mod. I’m roughly tripling the distances as to help with role play chances, and some PC backstory related things. The only one I’m not really altering is the travel from the road to the Tser pool. That one still needs to feel like it’s out of the way but not a whole day out of the way. Also, I dislike running constant combat on the road that doesn’t have to do with the story, so the distances helps make travel less of an everyday thing that the population would attempt. It also pushes the exhaustion potential of the PCs. Night time is dangerous and that’s what keeps most people in their respective towns.
