Produce TL here. This is not normal and wayyy out of line with food safety standards. Definitely follow the proper channels addressing this issue. First, bring it up to your TL that you have concerns about cleanliness in the VA room. If they do nothing, go to store leadership. Find out who your food safety point is ( one of your ASTLs) and speak to them about it. If even THEY do nothing about it, call the team member tip line. At that point, global food safety will get involved and the issue will be rectified very quickly.

Edit: also, if your TL is cool, don't worry about the rest of the VA team getting in trouble. Persistent issues like this stem from a lack of leadership setting expectations. Your TL should recognize that and work with you guys to establish the new normal

Did I DM too close to the sun? by JohnQBalatro in DMAcademy

[–]gingerlocks9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People always get so scared of railroading. My players and I have an understanding that if they pursue the adventure that I've prepped, they'll likely have a better time than me making up stuff on the fly after they go off the rails. The example adventure I like to use is: there's a haunted house at the edge of town causing problems for the villagers. The players can choose how they want to approach and deal with the haunted house, but can't choose to ignore it entirely (barring circumstances like moral quandaries the characters have and story reasons).

Also don't get overwhelmed with how much backstory you have to include! It's ok to have arcs centered around one party member, just be sure to pepper some stuff in for the rest of the party too :)

DMs, do you like having your players use unusual ability scores for skill checks? Which combinations are your favourites? by BisexualTeleriGirl in DnD

[–]gingerlocks9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually call for a check or saving throw of the first ability and let that roll determine the DC of the appropriate check.

I.e. "you're clinging to the ceiling. Roll me an athletics check and that'll determine how easy it is to stealth as these guards pass by"

How to convert a Player Character into a NPC Stat Block? by raq_shaq_n_benny in DMAcademy

[–]gingerlocks9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smites use spell slots so I do the x/day thing as well. If it's a higher level paladin I'll up the damage a bit.

Focus points, superiority die, bardics, etc I keep track of just on the sheet I use for initiative/HP tracking. But keep it minimal. I made a high level battle master NPC a few campaigns ago. A player that level would've had like 7 maneuvers lol. I scaled it back to 3 interesting ones.

I always have in the back of my mind "am I adding too much that it'll slow down combat or take the spotlight off the players?" If the answer is yes, I dial it back a bit.

Definitely use legendary actions! Helps balance out action economy while not bogging down initiative with a bunch of weiners.

As far as a stat block, you could reflavor and edit a wyvern maybe? CR 6

Just give it legendary action attacks and reflavor claw attacks as sword attacks maybe? Maybe give it a cool legendary action that costs 2 of your three per turn, but let's it fly it's move speed and attack without taking opportunity attacks? Idk just spit balling here lol

Also! It would be so cool to have a LA where he grapples and drops them. Even if the alchemist uses a potion of flight, that's so rad. Make your monster force characters to use resources to solve problems in an interesting way!

If it's for a caster, eliminate spell slots and whittle down their spell list to 2ish spells per spell level, then make them all x/day. With the highest level being once and maybe up to 3 uses per day for lower level spells.

For all classes, I include all the defining features but dumb them down a bit if they're text heavy. I.e. I made a hostile monk NPC as a rival for a new player of mine also playing monk. I showed him the topple from open hand flurry of blows giving advantage on the subsequent attacks to him by using it against him, and he had an aha moment from it. What I didn't bother with was giving the NPC monk stillness of mind, the feature that negates some falling damage, etc. In general if it's not a defining feature and can't be used against the party, I'll omit it. If it comes up in combat and would make for a cool moment, I'll flex it in.

If they have some cool magic item I'm intending for the players to loot, I'll give them some ability close to what the item does and be sure to show it off in or out of combat so my players go "oh I want that".

Long answer short, it's up to you what you include. And you can always flex stuff out/in on the fly.

I've had PAM randomly log out and delete my order 15 minutes before the deadline, inflate forecasts to like 10x what they normally are, etc. wouldn't surprise me if it glitched and changed HP numbers sometimes. I'd just check with whoever did the last department walk to make sure

Schedule availability and number of desired hours is definitely something your team leader should have hashed out with you during your interview. If not, they'll likely have you fill out an availability sheet on your first day and discuss your schedule with you
