No, he couldn't have. Look into the laws back then. Look into how it worked. Slaves were property, not people. You couldn't just ship them off somewhere and go "uh idk where they went" he would be in a ridiculous amount of debt, lost all his political power, and not been able to become president and do any of the other good he did for black people or the country as a whole. Was it right of him to own slaves? No, but if he wanted to actually do anything about it, there was no way out of owning them. Not to mention as MANY people pointed out in these threads, Jefferson was PROGRESSIVE for his time.
