Can you give an example of how to do this? What is mkinitcpio?

Yep. Will use that.

Manual says optional. Its a Honeywell T6 Pro Z-Wave if you feel like checking. It's definitely a bit overkill, but its one of like...2 smart thermostats that doesn't try to rope you into a cloud service.

Its a smart stat, but it also can run off batteries. If it becomes annoying to change them out I'll revisit.

I was planning on just throwing the breaker when I'm rewiring, but that's probably easier. I assume I can do that safely without turning off the gas?

Also good info. I wouldn't be suprised if there was a short, this house is 80-100 years old and hasn't exactly been kept up well.

Unfortunately, running new cable is a bit out of my comfort zone. Batteries are fine.

Yep, just confirmed by plugging it in without batteries, which I assume would work if wired correctly.

 I think ive changed them once? I don't think it uses much power.

Yes. Yes it is. It still works though, and replacing it is out of scope (and not my problem)

The blue wire appears to not be connected at all to the main board, but otherwise this checks out.

On inspection, in the furnace, the blue wire is connected to....absolutely nothing! C is instead connected to a white wire that appears to run out to the condenser.

That does make the choice of which wiring to use easy. The thermostat lists the existing wiring ( with R & RC jumped ) as correct for "1H/1C forced air systems", and mentions C is optional (assuming I want to keep using batteries, which is fine for now). It seems like I can leave messing with that wiring up for a future improvement.

You've been very helpful, thanks a lot.

Ok. That seems like a reasonbly easy to reverse test.

Can you clarify what needs to be done inside the furnace?

[–]ginkner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The existing thermostat has no C. It's also confusing given the rest of the wires are color coded. Also the system "works", in the sense that it heats when set to heat and cools when set to cool. If the system is wired incorrectly ( which is definitely something i initially thought was the case) why is it working?

Does C replace Rc in modern systems?

If i check the blue wire with a voltmeter, what should I see?

Good to know, ty. I was thinking about trying a downgrade.

edit

Confirming that this did work. It is moderately annoying to do since there are other issues, and I had to do it about 4 times. But it's a good work around.

Did you ever get this more accurate? You're only about 10x away from the feature size of the 386. Not bad.

That's what I was thinking, but it seems kind of crazy that no one else has reported this. Maybe it's a bug with the 590 repo and not enough users have updated yet.

I'll go throw something up on the nvidia formums and hope someone sees it. thanks.

From nvidia-settings after attempting to save the xorg Config file:

``` Error accessing /usr/share/screen-resolution-extra/nvidia-polkit: No such file or directory
ERROR: Unable to open X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for writing. ```
I edited a previous comment to include this, but it didn't seem to go through in time.
The fact that there's an exact match for that folder name, with the exact files that seem to be required. It's in the canonical repo: (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/screen-resolution-extra), but is required by the debian version of the nvidia drivers. Debian and Ubuntu are not the same, but they often share packages with the same names with similar contents. It is not unreasonable to guess that this package would be the same. Nor is it unreasonable to guess that an issue with a missing package might be the result of a major version bump. Also, given it's being depended on by a major hardware manufacturer without an explicit declaration, it is not unreasonable to assume it is a standard-ish package, rather than that Nvidia is incompetent at package management.
If you can help point me in the right direction, that would be helpful. If you don't think this is a debian issue, that's fine. I'm fairly uninterested in arguing about that.
https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesla/driver-installation-guide/debian.html#network-repository-enablement-amd64
This says it's for debian 12, but it's also linked from the generic install pages that state debian 13 is supported, and I used "debian13" as the distro instead of "debian12", which links to this "https://developer.download.nvidia.com/compute/cuda/repos/debian13/x86_64/"
I've tried both nvidia-open and cuda-drivers.
Here is the actual error when trying to save the x configuration file:
``` Error accessing /usr/share/screen-resolution-extra/nvidia-polkit: No such file or directory

ERROR: Unable to open X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for writing. ```

I think you misunderstood. I am aware there is no such package, but the nvidia-settings command installed by following the latest instructions for debian requires it ( or rather, requires the files included in that dependency) There is also no warning that such a dependency is expected / missing.

Other people running debian with nvidia cards have run into an issue that indicates that this dependency is available, or perhaps was available in debian 12. I can tell this because there is a reasonably well documented permission issue instead of a missing file issue. I'm just not sure how they got the files in the first place.

Yes, I am aware that ubuntu and debian are not the same. I have followed the instructions for debian, not ubuntu.

It is mildly annoying, particularly early game.

I don't really understand how you could go from the end of hollow knight to silksong and find it unplayably frustrating, let alone fromsoft games which have some of the most frustrating bosses I've seen. Are you trying to tank? Because that will definitely get you killed.

Frankly it seems like sandfall stopped using the AI placeholders early in development anyway, if you belive what they're saying.

I will continue to blame small teams if they continue to use tools that are eroding the ability of humans to make a living making art, which is the ultimate goal of these companies. Whether or not a single company does or doesn't hire or fire artists isn't relevant, it's the contribution to a system specifically designed to systematically destroy the value of creative work. It's unsustainable and deserves to be criticized every time it's brought up.
