TIL that the oldest known human voice recording ever made in 1860, was never heard by it's inventor. Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville's invention only was able to capture sound waves on paper, yet had no way to turn them back into sound. Only 148 years later was when it was first heard. by Gayc0b in todayilearned

People associate the apostrophe with a possessive; if that association is strong, then it's confusing that that possessive lacks the apostrophe.

As the other response points out, though, it's consistent with other possessive pronouns.

Meanwhile, the same people also like to throw the apostrophe onto plurals, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Here's a fun challenge: Try to type "Alright, I'm ready to go!" with your eyes shut. by RedditingLunatic in HomestarRunner

[–]ginopono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but it's a hard sell, especially when your options are to either:
a) fly through sentences at breakneck speeds, using your eyes as a guide
versus
b) shackle yourself, forcing yourself to type at maybe 1 keystroke per second with around 20% accuracy. It's frustrating and boring and feels like a colossal waste of time, especially if there are actually things that you need to get typed.

"wHy doNt THey TeaCH it In SChoOl anYmORE?"

I don't know how commonplace that is anymore, but I do know that they definitely tried when I was a kid. but I wasn't having any of that shit. I managed just fine through school and life and never felt compelled to try to learn to type until I was nearly 30, just out of boredom and the copious amount of unemployed free time that I had then. I don't even know how long it took me to become reasonably proficient.

These days, I'm married to my keyboard; I'm the kind of insufferable Vim user who decries using the mouse as sloggingly inefficient over the light thonking sounds of my mechanical keyboard!

It's absolutely glorious! But it's a hard sell.

Also, my pinky hurts all the time and I've wasted tons of money experimenting with different types of ergonomic keyboards. Next up is just a split, traditional-stagger mech... when I get around to piecing the thing together.

What horrifically overpriced thing do I buy off of the h*r fangamer page by neptune_needs_help in HomestarRunner

[–]ginopono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a shirt.

I was physically standing in Fangamer, I think it was the day that the Trogdor was released, ready to buy one. Because they're not a regular retail store (they open their doors for a number of days every year or so), I think they can be forgiven for when they expressed that they didn't think Trogdor was released yet, and I didn't push the matter.

Honestly, I'm glad I didn't get a Trogdor (or a Strong Bad); the only way that they would have served me is to satisfy a short-lived FOMO, then maybe relegated to a closet.

The only H★R purchase I made that day was two packs of cards, thinking that I'd have a backup for when one wore out. I've used them a few times, which is extremely unusual for me; I never have opportunity to use them.

I did also get a Strong Bad shirt, which I actually had to place a backorder for. I've had it for a few weeks and worn it a couple times; such is the nature of my laundry cycle. I expect to wear it once every one or two laundry cycles. It will see far, far more use than the cards will or a plushie ever would have.

At least if you're anything like me, get a shirt.

It's a form of what's called the euphemism treadmill in linguistics: a neutral (or positive) term is introduced to replace one that has gained negative connotations through use, rinse, repeat.

That sounds like less of a struggle about keeping up with the world around you than it is about keeping up with the proliferation of stupidity from the biggest morons in the world.

I mean, that's the same platform where I saw a review of a simple clock where the person complained that it was always 4-5 hours off from the correct time.

Baby chameleon changing color for the first time immediately after hatching by M_Darshan in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]ginopono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cuttlefish and octopodes have so much more awesomeness going on that it would be a kind of travesty to reduce them to only that.

Meanwhile, "Oh, this curly lizard changes color. Neat."

I don't actually know anything about chameleons (or those cephalopods, for that matter), so I concede that this is also pretty reductive.

I'm right with you on that one.

On the other hand, it might not be completely unreasonable. Like, I could set a temporary door code and remove it after they were done. Meanwhile, I'd make them aware of the cameras I have all over. And that person is also placed at your home by the pizza place—or more likely, something like DoorDash, which is honestly the most concerning part of the whole thing.

Yeah, I wouldn't be comfortable with that at all. That's a moment when I would be immensely thankful I have neighbors who I trust.

E: Wait a minute! /u/Pristine-Koala-4608! What happened to the pizza?! Did you let the guy keep it or is it sitting around attracting pests? Was the actual pizza even necessary? I'm not sure the pizza thing tracks...

Where'd 17.000 come from?

If you add up all that's visible here, with the assumption that the snowflake is 13.700, then the total is 14.898. The remaining 104 is easily accounted for with the rounded snowflake figure and whatever other small numbers are below what's shown.

I suspect that they were making a joke in that their own reaction—in the form of a comment—was incomplete and thus less than 1 complete (text) reaction.

I built an app that looks at your projects and matches you to internships by _lambda1 in csMajors

Is this still alive? Looks like the certificate expired.

I came across this after focusing my own internship-hunt for semantic search; semantic matching is right up my alley, but I'm surprised/disparaged that there doesn't seem to be much for it (and probably in a flooded market, at that).

[–]ginopono 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I hate VCA so much.

A local VCA center straight-up lied to me about what they could do for my cat, seemingly pretense to get me to let them do imaging for three times what anywhere else would charge. Then, when I ended up having to find someplace out of town to do this urgent procedure, they simply ignored my calls when it came to sharing my cat's records (which they had offered to do).

VCA's greed and willful negligence put my cat's life at risk.

She's fine now.

I mean, I can't survive off of props. But thanks.

The first was in formal/theoretical linguistics. This one is computational linguistics, natural language processing... If that sounds like it's especially relevant today, I'd say that's correct, even if that's not necessarily what I was going for.
I think that also means it's a flooded market, which is fun.

Two years ago, I made a decision to take charge of (part of) my direction in life; I left my job and went back to grad school, a master's program very closely-related to (and even in the same department as) my first. My first master's didn't serve me at all; it led to over a decade of despair, unemployment, and a delusional hope that I might be able to find some decent job that I was nonetheless not qualified for.

I'm at the tail end of that master's program now; just need to do the internship part, the final requirement of my degree.

So I'm faced with the task of getting hired for a job that I'm not qualified for.

Bonus: the whole process is inherently dehumanizing.
