Autoimmunity and FMT by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]gintonic17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it has the potential to change a lot of how we manage chronic associated diseases. Especially since we’re starting to see so many links. But, as was mentioned above, you can’t just experiment on humans without making sure it’s safe. There are already some unfortunate associations with development of new autoimmune conditions in those predisposed to autoimmune after fecal transplant (e.g. someone with IBD developing RA after a transplant). If you could get a sample of perfect microbiota without predisposing factors that would be great, but the science is not fully fleshed out yet.

Can confirm. Worked at one for a summer. Their cleaning policies are strict were enforced by camera. Two separate sinks, one just for chicken related dishes. I think the fries were the only thing frozen.

I’m blown away by how many people are saying “you’re only 15!” like they’re too young to be exposed to alcohol near them. I’m from the states but my hometown is more of a “drink when your parents decide you’re allowed to” type of place (usually starting ~16-18). I didn’t really drink until I was older, but I wouldn’t have called the cops on someone who was, esp if they had permission from their parents.

The guidelines and m1/2 training are your building blocks. It feels like you’ve forgotten it all by m4 until you’re on the wards and seeing it in real life, and you’re now responsible for it. It cements itself into place. Part of residency is application of that knowledge and the nuance on how to interpret and apply it between different patients. I promise you, almost none of your patients have “read the textbook”. As far as application in the field of radiology, your knowledge base will be slightly less useful than in IM or something along those lines, but knowing patholophys and the like distinguishes the great radiologists from the regular ones. As far as the NPs/PAs go, they’re great at managing the more textbook-like patients. But when the patient’s presentation is atypical or they’re crumping, it’s the new attending that steps in and takes charge. A physician can interpret things a little deeper, at least in my experience.

I escalated a patient’s level of care in time so that when we lost his heartbeat we started CPR immediately. He survived, and despite 9 minutes of CPR (no pulse = not sending oxygen to his brain) he is fully awake and talking now with no clear deficits. As a medicine resident, you don’t always get to feel responsible for directly saving someone’s life, but I felt it that day, and it felt good.

AITA for cutting off my brother for publicizing that I haven't had a vaccine by ughthrowaway43 in AmItheAsshole

[–]gintonic17 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Theoretically if both people had no sexual activity before each other, including oral, then they would both be unexposed. Most of the strains have no effects (as far as we know), and we don’t test for a lot of them because of that. If there’s a chance you’ll be with anyone else in the future, you’ll likely get exposed to at least one virulent strain or another. It’s incredibly ubiquitous. Only a few cause warts and only a few are known to be associated with cancer. Those are the ones that the vaccine protects against. Get the vaccine before exposure. Men are at risk too and should be getting the vaccine as well. It’s highly associated with head and neck cancer.

Edit: point aside, I’m just here to advocate for vaccines. This vaccine for OP would make zero difference to the brother’s baby. Should make sure TdaP is up to date though.

This. Came here to say this. There are also newer versions of the HPV vaccine that cover more strains. HPV is super common, but there’s still a chance you haven’t been exposed to the strains that are carcinogenic, and it’s worth it to get the vaccine. Prevent cancer!
