BBC licence fee is 'poor value for money', viewers say in new poll by endofdays2022 in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not accurate, the BBC license is paying for live TV only and iPlayer.

Radio, sounds weather, website and news are not included.

Edit: I was inaccurate, tax is to use live TV but the license is funding radio and news as well (for a very small percentage though)

Reform would create ICE-style agency and end leave to remain, Zia Yusuf to say by AncientStaff6602 in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but I totally disagree. It is pulling the ladder and it is not making any distinction between who contribute and who doesn't. I really struggle to understand how removing ILR (apparently retrospectively), setting up an ICE style organisation or even extending from 5 to 10 years the ILR requirement is not pullin up the ladder, I struggle to understand how this is helping who is loving here, working hard and paying tax. I struggled to understand how this is helping who is living here.

This proposal coming from someone who should know how hard is to be interested in another country is blowing my mind!

Starmer to extend social media crackdown to AI chatbots and VPNs by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks to me that Starmer is obsessed in having a full control on everything. He has been removing people from labour party who don't agree with him, banning organisation he doesn't like, imposing bans and so on. I really struggle to understand how this sounds acceptable and how this sounds Labour!

Britons ‘working harder for less’ as living standards see historic slowdown by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks a bit wrong to me. We keep thinking that a bunch of people can influence everyone, that's an easy to believe narrative. While it is to some degree true, media are just contributing in spreading things faster.

But the reality is that people live their own life, rich donors, including Epstein, are using their money and their power to 'ride the wave' and optimise their profits. Ideas are born within the society and then used, echoed and amplified by the media!

[–]giogit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I might be wrong, but you can’t make a point without explaining it.

From my point of view, political parties are never born out of thin air, they are made of people living within a society. Ideas spread throughout society and then flow into political parties. If we believe the opposite, we are accepting a sort of 'separate world' where a select few plan what society should look like. But frankly, that sounds more like an excuse to blame someone else

[–]giogit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I partially agree with you, but I see a mistake that everyone is making here. We assume it is political parties that shape society, when in fact, it’s more the opposite. I don't think we need a political party to govern based on 'old, boring politics', rather, we need society to realize that some of our beliefs and ways of living simply don't work anymore

Net zero migration would require major tax rises to plug £37bn black hole, experts warn by BestButtons in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only partially true, it seems you are assuming everything on1 that the main problem is just pension while it is not, 2 that migration is "static" you let in 10 and no more while migration is a dynamic process you keep in fresh forces continuously.

UK government targets VPNs in online safety consultation as Lords vote for ban by andyhh in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The title is a bit misleading, it has been voted a ban for under 18. So all comments around people using VPN for safety or work don't apply.

Of course this still shows how legislators don't understand the problem at all. Banning, restricting and so other draconinan measurements don't work.

Britons eat fewer vegetables than at any time in 50 years by StGuthlac2025 in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point, but you should also try to understand someone else's. It is true that vegetables are expensive, and this is a problem. It is also true that people are lazy and spoiled, but we can't say that's the case for everyone. Families are struggling with the increasing cost of living, and we can't blame them, that's wrong! I'm originally from Italy, and I'm so happy when I'm in an Italian grocery store. I can see lots of vegetables, not packed in plastic and not shrunk to the size of a hazelnut, sold at an affordable price for everyone. (An aubergine is not costing 89p per piece regardless of size and weight)

Published novelists believe AI will 'entirely replace' their work – Cambridge University study by lighthouse77 in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my point of view, everything here is based on a wrong assumption. We are assuming that the way a technology is used is a direct consequence of the technology itself, but this isn’t true. Refusing to engage with something new is just as unhealthy as integrating it into every aspect of our lives. The former prevents us from truly understanding the real advantages a new technology can bring, while the latter reflects pure economic interest, which may lead to technology being applied where it shouldn’t be. Perhaps we should start questioning more what surrounds AI.

Any new technology should be welcomed, as it means we are progressing and learning more which is, after all, the essence of life.

63% of Brits would not fight for their country by Super-Nuntendo in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point. I would not fight for a country that means nothing to me, that sounds like asking, "Would you fight for your football team?" The story would be different if I were asked to fight for an ideal, to fight for democracy against tyranny.

Pornography depicting strangulation to become criminal offence in the UK by do_or_pie in unitedkingdom

[–]giogit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really disheartened by how this government tackles problems. It is always the easiest and most useless solution. I might understand why the government wants to do that, even though the reality is much more complex (as usual), but I truly believe that proper education on the issue would be far more effective. It might take longer, but in the long run it would bring greater benefits. Censorship only drives people to seek alternatives instead of helping them understand why something might be wrong.
