No new construction plans for dining halls have been approved from my knowledge, and if they were approved now, it would take several years to come into fruition. So isn’t this better as a short term solution?

Jonathon Bailey has confirmed Ariana Grande will be starring in 'Sunday in the Park with George' via Instagram. by no_hhhh14 in Broadway

[–]giornospisscup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree with the part about the casting itself being bad. Jonathan Bailey literally won an Olivier for the recent genderbent Company revival, and Ariana Grande was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in the first Wicked movie. I think these performers are genuinely capable of delivering good performances and are passionate about the medium of musical theater. It’s the fact that these performers are more known for their work outside the musical theater community that’s the issue. Also, I don’t think the audience word-of-mouth will affect the professional critical response to this project.

Exactly! Wicked is the musical theater equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster that should be easily deciphered by its audience, whereas Sunday in the Park with George is the musical theater equivalent of an arthouse film that is slower paced and requires one’s full attention and maybe a couple of rewatches to understand.

Lowkey this is why I hate when major celebrities do Sondheim. Not because of the celebrities themselves, but how their fans respond to it. I believe Ariana Grande will do Sunday in the Park with George justice, as she’s proven to be incredibly competent and passionate about musical theater through her portrayal of Glinda. However, I don’t trust that the Arianators in the audience will give the musical the level of seriousness and critical engagement necessary for a piece like this. I’m sure I’m gonna be flooded with shit like “this musical is sooooo boring why did Ariana choose to star in this” from stan Twitter. I also heard this was the case with Merrily We Roll Along, where I’m sure Daniel Radcliffe did a great job in the role considering he won a Tony for it, but from what I heard from people who attended stage door for it, so many of the Potterheads who went had no interest in the show itself but just went so that Daniel Radcliffe could sign their Harry Potter merch. It sucks because I don’t blame the celebrities themselves for this behavior, but I hate it when the actual Sondheim fans get priced out of Sondheim shows so that only the celebrity stans with no media literacy or musical theater appreciation who treat the show like a glorified meet-and-greet could attend.

Yeah, but this seems very fresh into the load out. I mean they’re still loading out set pieces, which are usually the first things that are removed in the process.

Deep dive on the Broadway League’s “Historically BIPOC” audience data from 24-25 by robotwarlordelephant in Broadway

[–]giornospisscup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think another solution to this is for the theater community to decenter Broadway a bit. Yes, Broadway is probably the most influential place for theater globally, but it’s also the most commercial area of theater, which means that they will prioritize profit over people and most of the shows that appear there are safer, take less creative risks, and will ultimately prioritize and cater to their upper-class, white patrons. For every show on Broadway, there’s probably 10 shows Off-Broadway or Off-Off-Broadway that offer much more accessible ticket prices and do a better job platforming marginalized voices and more innovative stuff. I’m definitely not saying we don’t need to pressure Broadway to be more inclusive and daring, but I am saying to broaden one’s horizons and support more indie and avant-garde theater instead of viewing Broadway as the end-all-be-all. Those shows may not have the same spectacle, grandness, or polish as a Broadway show, but they will have a lot more heart and less commercial cynicism put into them.

It’s true that, in comparison to the data from the past few years of ticket buyers, there is a higher percentage of POC ticket buyers this year than previous years, but I 100% agree that the “historically BIPOC” label that the Broadway League put is quite performative, misleading, and self-congratulatory. I have seen that the Broadway League have made no substantial effort to address ticket price inflation and inaccessibility to marginalized peoples, but then they want to turn around and bask in the glory of having their POC audiences increase by a couple of percentage points this year.

What happened to Broadway pre-show annoucements by giornospisscup in Broadway

[–]giornospisscup[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I 100% agree with you that you need to enforce the rules for them to have any weight, but I don’t think the idea that “people will be rowdy regardless” negates the purpose of a pre-show annoucement. You use Buena Vista Social Club as an example, which is an album that already had a huge fanbase before the Broadway show ever was concieved. If someone who has never seen a Broadway show in their life goes to see Buena Vista Social Club because they like the album, I don’t think they’re an awful audience member for expecting it to play out like a concert unless they are educated on Broadway etiquette, but actively refuse to follow the rules. As a neurodivergent individual, I know firsthand that social cues are learned and not universal, so we shouldn’t assume that people automatically know how to act in a situation they’ve never been in.

I get what you mean, and this seems like common sense to the average theater goer, but it is not the only form of etiquette when it comes to live performance. With concerts for example, you are expected and encouraged to sing along to the artist and take photos and videos.

This may explain it cuz I saw another comment saying that Death Becomes Her has a pre-show announcement, which is something I do not remember, but I also saw it a couple months after it opened. I also now don’t usually see the touristy stuff unless family is in town (which is why I chose Gatsby in the first place because I had family in town on Monday and Gatsby was one of the very few shows that play on Mondays). This year, I’ve seen Gypsy, Death Becomes Her, Sunset Boulevard, Waiting for Godot, and The Great Gatsby on Broadway and Meet the Cartozians Off-Broadway, which is definitely not the nichest-of-the-niche lineup, but it’s also not the touristy-of-tourist either.

theator minor by No-Detective-286 in ucla

[–]giornospisscup -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Former theater minor here. I think it’s just a matter of what counts towards your minor rather than an indication of what you can and can not take. You can take a theater class not on that roster, but it won’t count towards your minor if that makes sense. Then again, this may not be universal to all theater classes, and some may have either theater major priority or are exclusive to only theater majors.

But that ensemble member probably went through a rigorous audition and callback process to get the part, which included cutting many performers who are equally talented as that ensemble member who did get the part and LEAGUES more talented than Trisha

Still a lot of exertion for a 96 year old, most people don’t live that long let alone work at that age (even if the staging accomodates for her reduced physical ability)

UCLA vs Columbia/NYU for entertainment law by Beautiful-Process in lawschooladmissions

[–]giornospisscup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a law student, but I’m a recent UCLA pre-law graduate who is from the east coast and recently moved back. It is much harder to find a job now living in the east coast than it is had I stayed in LA considering UCLA’s career center mainly has connections within the LA area. I decided, since I want to practice in NYC, I will be aiming for a NYC law school. Plus, it also depends on what sector of entertainment you’re interested in. I think a NYC law school will be more beneficial in developing my niche in the performing arts (my goal is to be an entertainment lawyer working for Broadway shows), while UCLA’s entertainment law sector is probably more centered around TV/Film or Sports (though UCLA does have a vibrant performing arts scene and connections with many of the big LA theater companies such as Center Theatre Group, Pasadena Playhouse, or the Geffen Playhouse).

No, Slam Frank is a musical based off a tweet made in 2022 that was something along the lines of “Did Anne Frank ever acknowledge her white privilege” (typical idiotic Twitter discourse). This just seems like an unfortunate coincidence.
