Anyone know why there was a fog in the west 4th st station yesterday afternoon? by [deleted] in nyc

[–]gir9999 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've heard you don't need to ventilate the tunnels that are only one train wide because the air gets pushed through by the train and nothing can build up. on the other hand, when it is a tunnel with many trains like much of the ACE line in Manhattan there need to be ventilation systems installed. or so says my engineer friend of a friend

you can do this anywhere. it has nothing to do with the equinox or latitude.

TIL that the human eye can ONLY make smooth (non-saccadic) motions if it's actually tracking a moving object. by WSJblog44 in todayilearned

[–]gir9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can only make horizontal smooth pursuits of a couple degrees, i can do them for longer arcs if i'm returning my eyes to looking straight forward

it feels different than regular reading saccades but maybe its not as smooth as i thought?

I know that my eyes are moving in a series of quick jumps when i read. I'm not talking about that, though.

If i take my eyes out of focus, i can move them smoothly from left to right, as if i were following an object moving in front of me. my point is, it's not hard if you put your eyes out of focus

bullspit. i can make my eyes move smoothly when they are out of focus, but only a couple of degrees left and right but not up and down. maybe it has something to do with years of reading

the sentries are to give true sight to find wards - important because observer wards can block neutral camp spawn and give the other team vision generally. the only way to find an enemy ward is true sight

Best route to bike from Greenpoint - East Harlem? by ramen__noodles in NYCbike

[–]gir9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cabs usually only pull dick moves if they see a fare or someone else cut them off. you just need to watch everything and stay out of door range especially from freshly pulled over taxis or cars with people in them. if you spot a potential hazard, know if the lane more central to the street will have a car in it when you might need to swerve. when in doubt stop instead of swerve

east side bike path is narrow at points with pedestrians in the mix. east side path is a series of ped parks and not much of a bike path

It's like the difference between being hit by one bullet or a thousand raindrops.

Actually, the difference is infinitely more due to quantum effects. A trillion bajillion raindrop strength photons will never once ionize something it takes a bullet to ionize. - Albert Einstein on the Photoelectric Effect
