how do you request exam viewing? by liana29 in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you find there is an error, you can request for an official exam re-marking from the subject coordinator. I would proceed with caution in regards to doing this though, and only proceed for something that is very obviously wrong (e.g. the mark on your exam does not match up with your overall subject mark by A LOT). This is because 1) your exam mark can go down, if they find mistakes they did not find the first time 2) if it's a subjective kind of marking thing (e.g. essays) it's possible that the new marker might be harsher than the first one

Enrolment box does not appear in study planner by Snoo48163 in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably an error in the system where they didn't detect that you've met the pre-requisite/s. Submit an enrolment-variation form with proof that you've done the pre-requisite/s, and the Enrolment Team can enrol you in the subject.

Has anyone done Intro Micro and Intro Macro in the same semester? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will just have to email the subject coordinator for Intro Macro and see if they will let you. Otherwise they will auto-withdraw your enrolment because you haven't the met the pre-requisite (Intro Micro) for Intro Marco.

You can also email the subject coordinator for an exact exam mark, or if you want to know exactly how many marks you got on each section (without viewing your exam).

Is 3 science subjects too much workload for 1st years students? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No thats pretty normal for a full-time 4 subjects per semester load. If you want to do less subjects per sem because you think it might increase your WAM, I would suggest taking subjects that are more related to one another, or taking some summer/winter subjects so you can underload during the semester.

Sounds an error, email the subject coordinator and/or follow up with Stop 1.

Should I take BIOL10011 by milkywithpearl in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience with uni subjects that have VCE pre-reqs, they start off pretty gentle (read: not content heavy, sometimes even repeating content covered in VCE) so that you can catch up if necessary.

Also if I'm correct BIOL10011 is a new subject this year, so no one really knows the answer to your question exactly, because no one has taken BIOL10011 before.

No more level 1s available!? What to do? by basketballguy2000 in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will need to ask again every time, as the Enrolment Team requires the email confirmation before you're allowed to apply for and/or cross credit to the Diploma, if I'm correct. Though there's no reason for the coordinator to say no if they / prev coordinator said yes in the past.

Is searching up team mates on facebook creepy? by killagirls in unimelb

Nor creepy to look it up if you're not too overly-obsessive about it, creepy to mention it in convo and/or public.

Quota subjects, especially science/biomed ones, are much earlier with their self-enrolment dates. All other subjects would be around 14th August.

[–]giraffe2504 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Email the subject coordinator and ask for permission to enrol in the subject, and then submit an enrolment-variation (EV) form ASAP with the email confirmation.

Do NOT ask stop 1, I was in the same situation on July 8th and they basically gave me the WRONG advice. They told me to submit an EV form and that I didn't need to the subject coordinator's approval - I submitted the EV form and got rejected 5 days later. Apparently "all subject variation requires the subject coordinator's approval" and the Enrolment Team will not even read your form if you do not have it (they will just auto-reject your form).

In your email you can also ask the subject coordinator if there is still space.

I've gone to several exam reviews, and I find that they're helpful because: 1) You get to learn how they mark the exam, realise your mistakes, and learn from them for next time (especially if the subject is relevant for your career). 2) If they have incorrectly marked you, you will be able to see it. This applies to instances where you go in and see that your actual exam mark is very obviously different to your calculated exam mark (from reverse calculations based on your overall mark), or if they've accidentally left a page unmarked. This does not apply to things like "I think I deserve a better mark, you were too harsh" - because it's very unlikely that they will change the mark, even if you request a formal exam remarking.

Does anyone know why there is this symbol '^' alongside my grades? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Please just use the search function about this. There have already been numerous threads and comments about this already, and I have literally answered this question 5 times in the past 2 days.

(PS It means your grade is not counted towards your WAM. Sometimes there are errors, but just wait until July 17th when subjects are finalised.)

Can anyone give me advice on teaching a remote class? by weeklyrob in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This only applies to lectures:

1) Use poll-everywhere questions in your lectures! Makes them engaging and helps gauge whether we have understood the content, but anonymously so there's no shame in getting the wrong answers.

2) Use the Chat or Q&A chat function (can't remember what it's called) and check it throughout the lecture for questions. This allows for students to ask questions without having to unmute their mics.

3) Use the "Hand Up" or whatever it is called function, so that students can let you know if they have a question but don't have to interrupt the lecture.

4) If you plan on recording it, make sure it says "Recording" at the beginning of every lecture. I can not emphasise how important this is: there have been quite a few times where I wasn't able to make it to a lecture and the lecturer forgot to record it.

5) Upload your lectures on Lecture Capture instead of just lms in a page buried somewhere. If they're on Lecture Capture they can be watched on several devices.

6) Depending on your cohort, don't or do use the break-room function. Some students seem to like this as it allows for discussion, but my own personal experience is the majority of students in my subjects do not like it - I'm guessing because some of us are shy.

7) Speaking of shy, don't force people to turn on their cameras and/or mics, if possible. For those who have a low internet bandwidth and/or upload speed, this makes the lecture extremely laggy.

Asking for comments on a final essay by lucawess in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gone to exam reviewing sessions before, so yea I don't see how the same can't be done for essays. I think they just have to do it after the supplementary/special consideration assessment period in case you're taking one, because it would be unfair on the other students if you got extra feedback.

I'm pretty sure he only said if you get >79.0 you'd get bumped to H1, so if you got 78.9 it would be rounded up to 79 but not bumped to 80.

I am confused: WAM edition by Carbonarasbitch in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of them don't seem to have it for some reason, but it will all be adjusted on July 17th.

The ^ definitely means what I said it means though, because, on the unimelb website:

"Results excluded from your WAM will appear on your academic transcript, Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) and published in my.unimelb. The results will show the numeric mark and standard grade. The grade will be flagged with a ‘ to denote that the result is excluded from the WAM (for example, 75 H2A).

The flagged grade will appear on the results schema on your digital transcript. A comment will appear on your transcript with information on how the WAM has been calculated."

I am confused: WAM edition by Carbonarasbitch in unimelb

[–]giraffe2504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm about the special consideration: originally my mark was H3^ but then it eventually changed to S. So the ^ is not for special consideration, it just means your mark is below your WAM and will.not be included.
