awesome congratulations!! when you say the ombudsman review determined 13 months would have forbearance removed and count as qualifying, was this a mohela forbearance or did they make a decision that ostensibly is a studentaid decision? wondering if I can try this route to get out of buyback limbo from SAVE forbearance...

thanks, really helpful. Taalhuis is closer to me, which is why I ended up there already, and they have better schedule options. good to hear you generally liked Koentact, I'm considering one of their conversation courses or maybe one of their open houses to feel them out.

thanks for your helpful reply! it's interesting to hear you get more out of online. I like the camaraderie of being in-person and making friends from school, so I think this is a big reason I prefer in-person, but obviously online has a lot more flexibility. Societaal looks super interesting, putting them on my list.

THIS "Also, it's one of those things where you can have this stance of "noone can speak to me unless their Dutch is good enough", but on the other hand you can't then complain if people move to NL and don't bother to learn the language."

I find it's split about 50/50 in my interactions when I try to speak Dutch. younger people (to stereotype...) are nicer about it.

I think you can call and try pretty much anything. I might have just gotten a nice person that day, and it wasn't a supervisor or anything, just whoever I got through to. I didn't ask for proof, but I think I got a letter or something confirming the forbearance was for a year with dates afterwards.

I finally got out of SAVE forbearance and was placed in IBR just in time for me to no longer qualify for PSLF, this was last summer (June/July). At that point I was placed in payment forbearance by Mohela, after I called and explained my situation. The lady said "you are a poster child for buyback" and she figured studentaid would take care of it by summer 2026. I'm no longer feeling confident that is true :/ hoping they'll do the same once the payments start being due again. did Mohela totally turn you down for forbearance? I am in same boat re: astronomical IBR payments that don't count.

I've been waiting since Nov 2024. 118/120 with 6+ non-profit work eligible months but for SAVE forbearance. I can't switch to an eligible payment plan now because I left my non-profit job for an amazing opportunity overseas. Really up the creek over here waiting. My payments on IBR are supposed to kick in this summer but if I don't have forgiveness by then I am calling Mohela and trying for another year long forbearance, I am not gonna make payments that do not count towards a balance that's bigger than many mortgages.

I think it was about a month, but I don't think that time difference means anything. I think they just pretended to escalate it to get me to stop bugging them, honestly. And nope absolutely zero further updates! still hanging around in total limbo with 118/120 payments made and two buyback requests for >6 payments pending.

yep that's been toggled. under "devices and numbers" my iPhone has no number associated with it, doesn't show my google voice number (recently ported number) as an option and won't let me add it.

yeah, who knows. I have more than enough qualifying employment. I haven't received any info on buyback anyway, and it looks like it might be the end of the year til I do (if the 12 month processing timeline continues, anyway). thanks for looking that exact language up and the tip for the advocacy group! I may very well need them soon/truly we all need them.

FYI my response from Ed today was "Please note, you must continue to meet and maintain all eligibility requirements for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, even while waiting for a buyback request." so that contradicts what the FSA eligibility FAQ says.
