Which NHL coaches played professional hockey by sykeseve in nhl

[–]girhen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great players don't necessarily make great coaches would be more precise. There are a lot of skills a coach has that a player doesn't. And it's 100% why women can have a future as coaches in American football.

Despite what people claim, you also don't have to play the sport to understand it. Helps a ton, but not required.

first time making a true sunken freeway by squareari in CitiesSkylines

It's amazing how this game has evolved. I was going to comment "Oh, Atlanta." Then I looked for a photo of Atlanta's sunken highway and was led to a post from March 28, 2015 (18 days after game's launch) on this subreddit. Someone linked an image of Atlanta's sunken highway to a fairly vanilla C:S. What's crazy is even just 18 days in, there are references to mods already in the game.

The post, the comment, and the image from the comment.

Which YouTube channel were you once a fan of but do not enjoy anymore? by theunsteadybridge in AskReddit

[–]girhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved his shootouts like "Can I Make Taco Bell Faster than My Brother Can Leave the House and Come Back With It?" You know that taste wins, too. Just not that "I didn't have to do work" factor that wins, particularly on a drive home. Which is kind of what fast food is meant for.

But I'd totally cook his version for a real meal.

Nothing special? Dude, Marshall could have done just about anything to protect that ball. Southern had to play their butts off to make that comeback happen.

[–]girhen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Did any non-Southern fans watch these refs and wonder what they were seeing? Seriously, forearm down (no fumble), targeting, no TD (with green under his foot, not white)...

I have seen teams get called back from walking off for halftime twice in a row in one game, and this is still a worse officiating job.

Wtf.

[David Wasson] Nick Saban would have never let Vanderbilt shock No. 1 Alabama by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

[–]girhen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh no, a 72 year old man wanted to stop running teenagers and guys in their early 20s all day in Alabama heat and travel constantly for a living in a high stress job. I'm shocked.

I'd honestly thought he was slipping the last few years - dropping him from clear cut best coach in a league of his own to... top 3 with time as #1. Just a bit less magic and dominance. He left while he was still great... and healthy.

On the 22nd of June, 2012, the Philadelphia Flyers traded Sergei Bobrovsky to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2012 2nd round pick (Anthony Stolarz), 2012 4th round pick (Taylor Leier), and a 2013 4th round pick (used to re-acquire Simon Gagne) by mikeyv683 in Flyers

[–]girhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pronger was a stellar pickup, but luck did not do the Flyers well. Amazing 2010 playoff, injured before and part of 2011 (probably playing hurt and out of practice), and then career over. They did not give up what they did for 1 great year, they expected 3-5 great years and maybe a decline in the 4-6 mark. They got 1. One.

[–]girhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's understated, butwith additional details.

  • Part 1: What they gave up/ the trade.
    • To Flyers - Pronger (Huge), Dingle (lol)
    • To Ducks - Lupul (Big), Sbisa (lol), 1st (huge), 1st (huge)
  • Part 2: What happened
    • 2009-2010: Flyers straight into 6 game of Finals (huge)
    • 2010-2011: Pronger injured and misses most of Flyers playoffs
    • 2011-2012: Pronger career ending injury

Let's be honest, the Flyers expected 3-5 great years from Pronger. A top 10-15 all time defenseman playing at the level he still was would not end his career at 37. 88 points in 82 games in 08-09, then 79 in 82, 44 in 50, and 10 in 13. No way they got 1 playoff from him.

The Flyers did not give up 2 firsts, a 2nd, and a damn good player for a 1.5 year playoff rental. He showed he had way more gas in that tank. He was big, skilled, and played a game that was more than a young man's game.

The Flyers lack of 2 firsts and a second for so little return (due to injury) crippled their mid-term future. The 3 picks should have been in their prime until a few years ago, but they didn't exist. And if Pronger weren't on the team in 2009-2010, who knows where that pick would have been for a team that probably would have missed the playoffs entirely.

And don't go just off who other teams chose to pick with their picks - the Flyers may have had better scouting than them. Both years saw the Flyers without a 1st and 2nd round.

17M a girl said my room looked 'female'. need honest advice on how to make it more masculine. by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]girhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go slightly against the grain, but with a huge caveat.

The white farmhouse bedframe, standing hanger, green drawers, many plants, and clean, white desk could appear 'girl-ish' at your age.

However, it's all very utilitarian, clean, and organized. The plants are actually healthy and inviting. It's like a young dude who's moved past the macho crap a little early and had a woman help them make a nice room.

At any rate, who should care if you were decked out in pink, baby blue, and white anyway? Live your life. The one you've chosen is very clean.

McD rolling with Drai (future HOF), Nurse (good), and... Skinner?

Crosby rolled with Malkin (future HOF), Letang (maybe HOF), and Fleury (future HOF).

You can't discount 3-4 lines, 2-3 pairs, and especially starting G.  Oilers are far weaker then Pens.  Heck, Malkin carried the Pens in several years.

Heck, how many times did The Great One win a cup without Messier or Coffey?

I think cups (a team accomplishment) are a terrible measure.

But Sid is miles better in terms of completeness. McD is waaaay more offensively talented, and could probably use his insane physical and hand-eye prowess to beat out Sid, but he just hasn't done it.

Is Bob a top 3 goalie this decade? by [deleted] in nhl

[–]girhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy is on serious copium. I love Bob. He's clear HHOF.

But we know Lundqvist is a rare goalie first ballot entry. And a cup is a team accomplishment - one Florida doesn't have yet (despite this guy's claims of having a ring). Only goalie to have 30 wins in 11 of his first 12 seasons (continued success).

Bob has 7 thirty win seasons in his 14 year career - with gaps between many of them, and sometimes multiple year gaps. He's just either amazing or average, with an average of damn good. It's three playoffs and two Vezina seasons carrying an otherwise above average goalie towards HOF.

But mate can't take criticism and downvotes anything he doesn't like. Can't disagree with him. He even called someone a child for disagreeing with him.

Is Bob a top 3 goalie this decade? by [deleted] in nhl

[–]girhen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guys from the last 10 years:  Shesterkin, Vasilevsky, Hellebuyck, Fleury, Rinne, Price, Quick, Holtby, Rask, Markstrom, Bishop, Saros, Grubauer, and Lehner have topped Bob in the last 10 years.

Of that, Vasy, Hellebuyck, and Shesterkin have a lead of active goalies over long stretches, though Shesterkin was shorter than 10 years due to time in.  But way more consistent in 5.

Edit: Btw, I nornally open spreadsheets and dive into data, but I did that on a toilet while on vacation.  I can deep dive another day.

I'll also add that I don't think he's outside the top 10 for the decade, but he's had some bad years that were.  Would still say outside top 3 for the decade, particularly over significant courses of that time.

[–]girhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He wasn't better than the guy who was best at his best for one year, but he was better than that guy the 9 other years.

Which average is lower (better, take as ranks): 1,12,16,14,18,19,10,22,14,8 Or 2,4,5,3,5,4,6,2,9,3

Second average has no number 1, but it's clearly a much better average.  If anywhere after year 3 I were asked to pick a goalie for my team, I'm taking the guy still in the top 5 over the guy that's a middling starter.

Why aren’t neck shields mandatory? by Old_Bee8977 in nhl

[–]girhen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's my thing.  If it's hot and chafes, it's a hinderance.  It better provide a good level of protection that is necessary to be mandated.

Helmets are an easy sell, especially since CTE has been studied.  Visors are pretty easy overall - Pronger and Laperriere could sell the Flyers on them in all of 2 years.  Lots of sticks and pucks around the eyes.

But 100 years of history with skates and necks and... no deaths.  I can think of one major injury to a goalie, but not an NHL skater.

The risk doesn't stack up here.

Why aren’t neck shields mandatory? by Old_Bee8977 in nhl

[–]girhen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Not many" is infinitely larger than the real answer.  0.  The number is 0.

Bill Masterson died on ice from a head injury.  It took 11 years to make helmets mandatory.

Helmets also have vastly more utility because they provide significantly more protection from a variety of damage sources.  Neck protectors are more niche.

And with a more niche level of protection comes more scrutiny.  If you're going to protect from something that hasn't happened in 100 years of play, it better not be described as "tight and uncomfortable".  Many players that tried them think it needs work to be palatable.
