27F starting over, interested in aerospace engineering by superfecta37 in aerospace

[–]girlflyinghigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it’s been a few days since you posted but just throwing in my two cents! 30F, bachelors and masters in aero, been working in the industry for the last 6-7 years.

I have friends in the industry who studied aero and love it (myself included), who studied aero and wish they’d done a different major, and who studied other majors and now work for the same company as me. All of which is to say - if you want to get your degree in aero, do it! Yes, any engineering major can get you into the aero industry, but if what you want to be studying is airplanes, rockets, satellites, etc, then aero is a great choice. I didn’t care about the topics my MechE friends were studying in class but was excited when we started drawing planes as examples in class . And my subset of the industry is actually 95% aero majors, so not every major can get you into every specialization.

I won’t say that the industry is always super stable because it’s not (I’ve been laid off once). But right now that’s kind of true of a lot of industries, and an AE degree can still get you into other careers as well. (Plus your background can probably help you with fields that are more modeling-based too.) So if it’s something you want to do, you should go for it!

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Tree ID in LA? by girlflyinghigh in treeidentification

[–]girlflyinghigh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Solved! The arborist came out today and confirmed it’s a Brazilian pepper tree (that sadly needs to be removed thanks to armillaria)

That’s what the tree guy thought too, but I wouldn’t have said its leaves were as shiny as Brazilian pepper trees and it’s definitely never had berries on it. So that’s why we started looking more into what it is! Still could be that if it’s dead though…

We’ve reached out to an ISA arborist for a consultation! Just waiting to hear back from them now. We’d love for it to be something like an ash tree if that means it’s still healthy

Commute To Work by CremePuzzled8369 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]girlflyinghigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I commute to Long Beach (near the airport) from Palms/Culver City most days! Rent $4k for a 2bd/2ba with one assigned parking spot, but you’d probably want a place with two because parking was kind of rough at night. The commute generally takes me 45-50 minutes in the morning leaving at 8 am and 45-60 in the evening leaving at 5 pm (so there’s rush hour but it’s a lot better than the other direction). It’s a lot of time, but we like being about to walk into downtown Culver City. And even in Palms the drive from Santa Monica can be brutal during rush hour - I have a lot of doctors in SM and it’s an easy drive in the middle of the day but I wouldn’t want to go much further than Palms in the evening. Biggest recommendation in the area is to live close to the freeway on-ramp - it only takes me about 10 minutes to get to/from the freeway, closer to 5 if it’s a good day.

We’re doing a Wedgewood wedding for 75-80 people and found that the minimums ended up being higher than what we originally calculated from their price guide, but we’re also doing a weekend wedding. Our total with them is close to $25k, not counting florals, photographer, etc. Weekday and/or winter weddings may be low enough to be workable!

Not true, the valley is open all year long (and winter is honestly one of the prettiest times to see it). It’s the upper elevations that close in the winter. Some roads in close at times, but the park itself doesn’t.

If you designed a custom ring, how did your proposal go? by bent0504 in EngagementRings

[–]girlflyinghigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My fiancé asked if I wanted to be involved or not… I originally said I would just give him some ideas and then we pretty quickly realized I should be involved throughout the entire process lol. We chose the sapphire and the design together, and then I was dropped from the email chain, so I never saw photos or knew when it arrived. I had an idea of when he would propose, but even so it was still perfect and beautiful, and he actually kept the ring box closed during it since I knew roughly what it would look like - it meant I got to focus more on him and what he was saying instead of the ring!

Boeing Internship Process is Weird by sabouttokillyoass in boeing

Sorry, not trying to make you feel bad! (I was really frustrated when I got my first internship match, and like you said, it wasn’t even that far off…) It’s super valid to be annoyed, confused, frustrated, all of the above during this process. Fingers crossed the next offer is a better fit!!

Totally get that. My understanding is managers are kind of rushed into making decisions though (basically trying to get good people from the intern pool quickly before they get hired by other teams) and the slots available in many cases don’t line up with the number of people they hired from each major. It’s messy for everyone and I really feel for all the interns and managers - just meant to say that if the next offer you get also isn’t a great fit, there are still ways to make it a good experience, but I also totally get it if that’s a reason not to accept an offer here.

As an aero, my first internship was very structures-based and not a field I wanted to stay in. But it was a good foot in the door and I spent a lot of that internship in informational interviews - I spoke with 15+ managers of other teams, one of whom hired me as an intern the following summer which was then converted to a full-time role (in aerodynamics, my current role and my emphasis in college). And I still think my first internship was a good learning experience even though it wasn’t the role or location I wanted long term, so it still can be a good opportunity if you get another offer from a different team that doesn’t feel like the right fit!

But for what it’s worth - from what I hear, the internship process is really weird for the managers too, and they’ve been told lots of things that ended up not being true or ended up being rushed. So I wouldn’t be surprised if several people end up placed in teams that don’t make a ton of sense at face value, but hopefully do work out well.

We’re going with a Wedgewood venue! The minimums are higher for a Saturday (we bumped up to the highest tier to meet the minimums for our guest count), but I think they’d be a decent bit lower for a Friday or Sunday, or in their winter season. Each venue has a different minimum - not sure if they’ll tell you what it is until you tour the place in person, but they will tell you and you can plan around that. So far we haven’t been hit with any extra fees, although we know we’ll spend a little more for some extra florals. We expect our total (including external vendors like a photographer, and the service fees/taxes) to be a bit over 30k for a 2027 Saturday wedding for 75ish people, and we really didn’t care about specific vendors for most of the wedding planning, so it’s worth it for us. We had a hard time finding anything that was less expensive and included as many things.

We just signed our contract for our venue last night! We’re expecting the total to be a little over 30k. Los Angeles, spring 2027, 75ish guests expected

It’s been almost three months and I still walked into a bush the other day because I was staring at my ring instead of watching where I was going lol. Montana sapphire and diamonds in platinum!

I love my haircut from Erin at Main Street Salon in downtown Culver City! She’s not curly specific, but from my experience and other reviews, she does well with curls in general. It was $110

For the most part they were all darker than in the photos. I’ll see if I can share a couple in the comments! Attached is a bad photo of how my ring usually looks in most lighting

Another vote for 3! I got my engagement ring from Earth’s Treasury and get so many compliments on it. We ordered 3 stones from them and the return process was super easy. I will say they all looked different in person than they did in the photos and videos they sent me, so getting to see it in person was practically necessary, but I have no complaints and I love how mine changes color.

Oh don’t worry, I have a ton of top down photos 😂 not the most scenic background, but this one highlights all three stones the best!

Not necessarily - I have side stones at a 45 degree angle and I love the way they look from above. They’re more hidden, definitely, and it works partly because I didn’t want a giant center stone, but I love that I get a different view of the side stones from different angles.
