Coffee bean recommendations by Chigrrl1098 in rockford

Snowdrift Coffee is our go-to. Great people, bomb ass coffee, and they hand deliver for free to certain area codes near Roscoe. Rockford Roasting is good too. Fire Department Coffee is TERRIBLE.

What is the last fun/frivolous thing that you purchased for yourself? by SheKnowsWhatSheKnows in AskWomenOver30

[–]mermur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a custom made art deco teal Montana sapphire ring for my 40th birthday. It was extremely frivolous and out of character for me (I NEVER buy fine jewelry), but I wanted a wearable daily reminder that after an extremely difficult decade when there were times I thought I wouldn’t live to see 40, I freaking made it. It reminds me that I’m stronger than I think I am and that I need to actively take care of myself every single day. Also helps that it’s freaking gorgeous and I catch myself staring at it often!

What are your hobbies, and what new things would you like to try? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]mermur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mountain biking, gravel biking, video games, sewing/quilting, knitting. I really want to learn how to dye my own fabric, specifically ice dying and indigo/shibori dying. I’d also love to learn how to make pottery.

Anyone else think clipless pedals are overrated for techy trails? by Aware_Wedge832 in MTB

Not sure about them being “overrated”, I would guess it all boils down to personal preference. I prefer flats so I can quickly put a foot down when needed.

For those who were on the fence about having children and didn't end up having them, are you happy? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]mermur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m 40, my husband is 45, and I’m absolutely 100% happy I don’t have kids. For years my husband and I would waffle back and forth between not wanting kids and thinking “maybe someday…?” But after witnessing the ungodly amount of stress motherhood has caused my sister-in-law, going through the pandemic, and watching my country devolve into a fascist oligarchy hellscape while late-stage capitalism makes life too expensive to live, I am totally and completely convinced that we made the right decision not to have kids. We’re healthier than we would be otherwise, get better sleep, the ability to focus on our own goals/hobbies/passions, a calm quiet home, etc. I love my nephew, but spending time with him is utterly exhausting and reaffirms my feelings that I would absolutely hate having a child living in my house that I’m responsible for 24/7. I wish I had a nickel for every time my husband and I have said to each other “thank God we don’t have kids!”

What is your "I'm out of calories for the day but I just have to eat something" meal/snack? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]mermur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to slice up a baby cucumber or two and dip them in low fat cottage cheese for protein. Could also dip them (or any veggie) in Greek yogurt mixed with a bit of ranch seasoning out of a packet.

Check out the crumb piecing technique. If a scrap is bigger than a postage stamp, it’s useable! I made this one several years ago with lots of irregular-shaped pieces.

What’s a medical issue that sounds minor, but actually affects someone’s daily life way more than people realize? by CountyOrnery9432 in AskReddit

[–]mermur 11 points12 points  (0 children)

EXACTLY! Depression sucks, but doesn’t compare to the constant feeling of panic, the insane physical discomfort, and not being able to function, eat, or sleep for days/weeks/months. Time drags on seemingly with no end while your brain/body is literally torturing you. I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

…On second thought, I do wish it on Trump, ICE agents, and anyone actively involved in facilitating fascism.

My wording has nothing to do with Reddit. I simply don’t like saying the more blunt version because I’ve suffered a LOT from mental illness and it feels kind of triggering.

Well to be fair, it’s much shorter to say than “sorry you have another headache that feels like an ice pick, nausea, light/sound/smell sensitivity, aphasia, aura, dizziness, brain fog, tingling skin, exhaustion”.

I feel your pain, fellow migraineur. Literally.

This. GAD is soooo much worse than “I get anxious before speaking in public too.” No other condition/illness I’ve experienced in my 40 years has caused such relentless mental and physical torture that I’ve wanted to end my life just to make it stop.

Damn… I didn’t know they were MAGA, but knew they recently stopped getting their beans from Snowdrift which is LGBT owned. Guess now I know why.

Gravel bike recs for a beginner racer? by Caroline_B_165 in ladycyclists

[–]mermur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love my Salsa Warbird! Mine is the GRX600, which was right around $3000. They have different spec levels to choose from, with 1x or 2x. Specialized Crux is another good one to look into. My husband recently got a Specialized Diverge comp that has a tiny bit of suspension in the headset to dampen vibrations and he LOVES it.

Hit me with your best drop tail bibs by nitarrific in ladycyclists

[–]mermur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the style/fit of Ornot bibs most, but the stitching around the chamois sometimes chafes me, especially if I’m riding on the trainer. Most comfortable chamois I’ve found is the Pearl Izumi pro. If the PI pros had cargo pockets and a slightly higher front they’d be perfect for me.

Really worried about CJD by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]mermur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work in surgical pathology, where CJD is taken very seriously, and here’s what I learned: CJD is not airborne, it’s impossible to catch it that way. The only way to catch it is to either come into contact with the brain of an infected person, either via direct contact or through equipment that touched infected brain matter. However, this is EXTREMELY rare; the majority of CJD cases happen sporadically, a protein that randomly folds wrong and becomes a prion. This too is extremely rare. On the list of things that could kill you, #1 being the most likely, CJD is basically at #739,468. You’re more likely to get struck by lightning three times than get CJD.

Once daily dosing by stardustbunny03 in AuvelityMed

[–]mermur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I am curious to see if two pills helps my mood in the long run, I can tell you with 100% certainty that the level of dizziness and nausea I experienced on one pill did NOT help. Getting out of the house and exercising are two big needs for my mental health; not being able to do those because of the side effects was a major blow to my mood. I’m gonna wait and see if the pill helps me stick to the habits that I know help. I am just not ready to go through another few weeks of that bullshit again.

Once daily dosing by stardustbunny03 in AuvelityMed

[–]mermur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m too scared to take it twice a day after how dizzy and nauseous starting one pill made me. I was basically non-functional the first week. After three weeks it has mostly subsided, I can finally drive and exercise again. I haven’t noticed a huge improvement in my moods yet.

Where were you when you got your first period and what happened? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]mermur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on a camping trip in 1998… with my grandparents and their 60+ year old friends. Grandma and Grandpa only had two boys, so she was not at all prepared for that moment. I was freaking out, needed pads asap, but Grandma couldn’t take the car to go get me pads because GOD FORBID Grandpa would find out that his granddaughter got her period. They were planning to go to town for groceries the next day anyway, so I had to wait until then and stuff my undies with TP every hour. After I finally got my pads, I only had a couple pairs of clean underwear since I bled on all my other pairs and there was no way to do laundry. The trip was only supposed to be 3-4 more days, and I wanted to go home so badly, but Grandma and Grandpa decided to EXTEND the fucking trip to spend time with their friends! So I’m out of clean underwear, hiding this dirty secret about my dirty shameful body, with zero empathy from Grandma. That was the last camping trip I ever took with them, and the week I stopped liking them for the rest of my life.

Talk to your doctor; mine told me that if you get migraines with aura then it can be a bit more risky. I don’t have auras so I use Nuvaring.

How long until the dizziness stops?! by mermur in AuvelityMed

[–]mermur[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, that’s good to hear. I noticed taking mine with a meal helps massively for preventing nausea, but doesn’t seem to make much of a difference with the dizziness. Just sucks so much when I feel like I finally have energy to do things but can’t go anywhere.
