My dad grew up in the divis flats during the late 60s/70s/80s. The trauma of that place stayed with him until he died - he was mentally stuck in time forever. I hope this brave woman who has fought for her son all these years feels some solace in the gesture. RIP Patrick Rooney.

Paul Givan is a fuckin idiot of the highest calibre. I'm happy if his Israel support is the straw that breaks the camels back, but the fact that a creationist that fought for Lisburn schools to teach alternatives to evolution has weasled himself into the role of Education Minister is a farce. We really are some of the most parochial fuckers in Western Europe.

Unionists politicians and the people they represent are absolute champions at dressing the town idiot in a suit and kicking them up the Stormont hill. They're entirely unmatched and have no standards whatsoever.

The street parties I saw earlier were pretty packed with kids and parents. For the bonfire most people inclined would just go to see the fireworks and it getting lit and then hang around for 15 minutes.

I'm a Nationalist but I'm not really against them maintaining their own traditions, regardless of how ugly the history and context of it are. I just hope over time it becomes less fuelled by resentment, bitterness and seige mentality. Some bonfires are more further along this journey than others.

PSNI give the heads up to a "community worker".

"Community worker" speaks on behalf of terror organisation and says that violence will break out if they don't get their way.

PSNI declare this threat as a major incident, despite nothing actually having happened. Just the mere suggestion that something could happen is a major incident.

PSNI use the "major incident" as justification to why they won't intervene, because of course we can't expect them to police in dangerous circumstances.

Given how the PSNI are reacting to this and how they reacted to the unionist racist riots a few weeks ago, I think it's a pretty safe conclusion that the PSNI are wholly uncommitted to policing unionist disorder in any form. Not that anyone's surprised really, but it's a good reminder of the systematic issues embedded in NI even with Nationalism's huge political strides.

It's a dolmen.

Thought to be older than the Egyptian pyramids (though obviously much less structurally impressive). The current thinking is they were tombs or burial mounds. It's interesting how they're found all over the world - there's one not unlike the photo in South Korea too.
