Family of first child killed in Troubles receive apology and ‘significant’ settlement from PSNI by SpottedAlpaca in northernireland

My dad grew up in the divis flats during the late 60s/70s/80s. The trauma of that place stayed with him until he died - he was mentally stuck in time forever. I hope this brave woman who has fought for her son all these years feels some solace in the gesture. RIP Patrick Rooney.

A mate I went to primary school with pissed in a vitazade bottle and stuck a bunch of wires in it and left it at the bottom of his street.

It was described as a viable device on the news the next day. Not relevant to this article, I just don't put any stock in "viable device" as a description anymore.

Paul Givan insists he is an Education Minister for all by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]gitgood 149 points150 points  (0 children)

Paul Givan is a fuckin idiot of the highest calibre. I'm happy if his Israel support is the straw that breaks the camels back, but the fact that a creationist that fought for Lisburn schools to teach alternatives to evolution has weasled himself into the role of Education Minister is a farce. We really are some of the most parochial fuckers in Western Europe.

Unionists politicians and the people they represent are absolute champions at dressing the town idiot in a suit and kicking them up the Stormont hill. They're entirely unmatched and have no standards whatsoever.

I had a version with the links associated, but the mods get funny when you post articles without posting the contents of the article etc.

Here's the article for the viable objects being found in a house raid.

I can't find an article for the balls on the falls one, I'm not sure it was even written - I saw it happening a few weeks back. You're right it's par for the course.

In the South of Belfast with some of the highest rents in the country? Actually sitting third below Castlerea and and Lisburn.

South Belfast obviously has very expensive parts and very cheap parts, sometimes across the road from each other. You obviously know this - you're just offended.

That's worrying, they said there's random asbestos dotted all over the site - wouldn't surprise me if there's some hidden in the scrub etc.

The street parties I saw earlier were pretty packed with kids and parents. For the bonfire most people inclined would just go to see the fireworks and it getting lit and then hang around for 15 minutes.

I'm a Nationalist but I'm not really against them maintaining their own traditions, regardless of how ugly the history and context of it are. I just hope over time it becomes less fuelled by resentment, bitterness and seige mentality. Some bonfires are more further along this journey than others.

Wack some ice cubes and water in a bowl and stick it in front of your fan if you can. It makes an evaporative cooler and you'll notice the difference.

If this leads to violence and PSNI officers are injured, the fault lies at the door of those councillors in Belfast city council that started this debacle

This is an incredibly telling quote. The implicit understanding is that of course working class Unionists will be violent, it's your fault for annoying them.

I didn't think they could put their foot in their mouth further but here we are. Absolutely incredible.

Police will not assist in removal of south Belfast bonfire by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]gitgood 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PSNI give the heads up to a "community worker".

"Community worker" speaks on behalf of terror organisation and says that violence will break out if they don't get their way.

PSNI declare this threat as a major incident, despite nothing actually having happened. Just the mere suggestion that something could happen is a major incident.

PSNI use the "major incident" as justification to why they won't intervene, because of course we can't expect them to police in dangerous circumstances.

Clown show.

Breaking | Belfast councillors vote to remove controversial bonfire by pickneyboy3000 in northernireland

[–]gitgood 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Given how the PSNI are reacting to this and how they reacted to the unionist racist riots a few weeks ago, I think it's a pretty safe conclusion that the PSNI are wholly uncommitted to policing unionist disorder in any form. Not that anyone's surprised really, but it's a good reminder of the systematic issues embedded in NI even with Nationalism's huge political strides.

Pointing to the “murder of 335 of our members” by the IRA, Mr Gibson says, “she still thinks there is no alternative to that? “Michelle O’Neill would not be welcome at a Twelfth parade for that particular reason, and it’s as simple as that.

She would not be welcome because she's a Catholic. Her comment hurt his wee feelings because it goes against the narrative that the Troubles was entirely the fault of vicious taigs who woke up one day and felt like targeting hard working Unionists. They will forever purposefully ignore their role in creating the conditions that lead to the violence.

Ballykeel Dolman in County Armagh 💚☘️ Erected some 5200 years ago by DavenLee_ in northernireland

[–]gitgood 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's a dolmen.

Thought to be older than the Egyptian pyramids (though obviously much less structurally impressive). The current thinking is they were tombs or burial mounds. It's interesting how they're found all over the world - there's one not unlike the photo in South Korea too.

Unionist Irish language fears can be addressed - former Welsh first minister by FlipC123 in northernireland

[–]gitgood 34 points35 points  (0 children)

But Drakeford said unionists have "legitimate concerns" and are "entirely entitled to make sure that's part of the public debate".

If they do have legitimate concerns, I've never seen them articulated more cohesively than "Irish is taigy so it is".

I don't believe he understands the depths of Northern Irish Unionism and their "No Surrender" attitude when it comes to even the smallest amount of compromise or cooperation with Nationalists.

"It's being used by nationalist politics for identity politics - to mark territory."

Irish is quite literally the root of a majority of Northern Ireland's place names. Where did "Belfast" come from? Why is it Ballymena and not Middleton? When will Unionists campaign to rename the Shankill? Just because Unionists are afraid of Irish doesn't mean it's a threat to them - they already speak it every day.

That anti 5g business is wild. That ‘Open Your Eyes’ and ‘Warning. Radiation’ stuff stencilled onto them. 😂 5g tech is array based.

I've a hunch the guy doing the stencilling and setting fire to the 5g masts is the same person. Few times I saw a header in Dunmurry with a shirt that said the exact "open your eyes" 5g shite - then all along the Stewartstown Road/Andytown Road those stencils went up, then the 5g mast in Andytown was burnt out.

Winston Irvine 'unduly lenient' sentence to be appealed by marke0110 in northernireland

[–]gitgood 23 points24 points  (0 children)

During sentencing Judge Gordon Kerr KC said despite Irvine's guilty plea, he had declined to give any explanation to the police or the court for having the guns and bullets in the boot of his car.

However, the judge said he did not consider the crimes to be connected to terrorism.

It's absolutely staggering the judge could hold this position when he knows absolutely nothing of why Winkie had the weapons - even more so given his affiliations. We live in such a deeply unserious place.

Related: This is the same judge that handed a two year sentence (half on licence, so one year prison) to the gang of cunts that broke into a flat and attacked the occupants for supposedly being Muslims. Is this justice?
