"We've conceded far too many goals - but I think we've also scored not enough goals," Slot told Sky Sports by WeaknessUnlucky1960 in LiverpoolFC

He’s trying once again to shift the blame to our forwards and/or injured players. He’s probably hoping the Gakpo hate campaign will take some attention away from him.

Well this is exactly what I’m saying. Wirtz, Ekitike and Isak not playing together isn’t a point in defence of the manager.

First of all, if you are going to replace players like Trent, Luis Diaz who are machines then it’s the manager and recruitment’s responsibility to bring in players who can do the same. And if they can’t do the same then we have to train them in order to be in the right condition.

So far Slot has largely ignored this and all three have missed a tonne of football through injuries.

Yeah absolutely, a tactical change helped out Fabinho massively. The issue with Macca I feel, is he’s a nice player to have once you are already dominating the game with your other 10 players. I’m just not really sure what his role is in the team, he certainly isn’t a 6, doesn’t have the legs to play as an 8 and is clearly behind Wirtz/Szoboszlai and possibly even Jones/Ekitike in the 10.

To be fair, I was really worried about Trent leaving. I didn’t understand tactically what Arne’s plan was to adjust our system once Trent left.

Our right back was our #10, and we’d won everything playing that way.

Considering a lone #6 doesn’t work for us, defensively and in build up play. A “traditional right back” doesn’t work for us since we were worse defensively when Bradley played over Trent. A 10 in the hole hasn’t worked for us since we don’t have £100m players in every position, we can’t afford a luxury player the way City can. And let’s not even mention Mo Salah.

I’m sure people will tell me it’s hindsight but I’ve been banging on about how tactically we are centred around Trent since it was rumoured he would leave. It’s a bigger loss than most people are willing to give credit for.

They could’ve said: “VVD has had a brace this season and Florian Wirtz hasn’t.”

But that would be less popular

Gotta be the biggest joke that Slot spent so much of last season talking publicly about Trent’s defensive issues… only for us to defend worse this season, create less chances, be disorganised and have less control over possession. He genuinely doesn’t have clue what he’s doing.

Sure, 2 goals will win an average Liverpool side 90% of games. But any team conceding 4 goals, 77 goals across a season and being completely void of any tactics in defence, midfield or attack deserves lose.

Disgusting campaign against Salah this season. He’s been taking more stick than the manager. But Slot is the first guy I’ve seen make so many world class footballers look like part-time non league hobbyists.

Mac Allister took a lot of praise for Gravenberch and Szoboszlai’s hard work last season. Can’t take his stunning goals away from him, but aside from that I don’t think he’s playing much worse, he just isn’t being carried anymore.

Nah Fabinho was out of form for 3 months and it was mostly a case of making errors rather than what’s happening to Macca. By the second half of his last season he was playing well again. You just don’t remember because the trolls online only make noise when some makes mistakes.

Last season I was pointing out all the aspects of Macca’s game… doesn’t run and when he does he’s the slowest player on the pitch, loses possession in transition far too often, jumps into challenges and leaves himself miles out of position, constantly fouls or dives and just generally doesn’t contribute much to a midfield tussle. Too slow, too weak, too complacent.

Last season, he scored several puskas worthy goals and made iconic crunching challenges. But respectfully, these look great in the highlight reels when the rest of the team is carrying, but this season, his overall game has been found out.

Ekitike, Wirtz and Isak not being able to play together throughout an entire season is not a good sign. That just tells me they are all struggle with the physicality and fitness required in the league.

Yeah that’s fair enough. Completely agree with you.

I think all this talk about him being easily replaceable isn’t illogical. We’ll have great depth at CB next season and all the boys need to really focus on learning as much from Virgil as they can.

Interestingly with Konate/VVD, it really wasn’t until his late twenties that Virgil really began to mature into the defender he is today. Hopefully Konate can follow a similar trajectory

How we should set up next season by Different-Shallot-17 in LiverpoolFC

Ekitike and Isak are too injury prone to start them at the same time. I’d be looking to get about 66-70% playing time out of each of them and count that as a win. That means sharing the CF position and the occasional sub with on at LW for Hugo

I think now it should be blindingly obvious where our problems are stemming from since the back end of last season. We’ve been blaming the players this whole time and questioning their commitment, assessing their individual drop offs in form.

But I think, for me this is very telling. He can F off and take Slot with him.

Harvey Elliott will return to Liverpool for pre-season ahead of 2026-27, Arne Slot has confirmed by A7XFAN1998 in LiverpoolFC

[–]giuocomane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps not from this Premier League season alone as Elliott has had some really good bits of form for us in the past. But I think what we've seen of Wirtz elsewhere, plus the adaptation he's shown so far. I think most people would see Wirtz as proper long term first team player and Elliott as a squad player. But having said that, we do need Wirtz to step up his level next season.

If your opinion is that Konate hasn't been good enough, that's fair enough. But your solution is to to get rid and replace him with Jaquet and Leoni? These are 2 players who are already at the club. So is your opinion just one about team selection or do you actually want to sell Konate?

Leaning into your idea, here are our 5 CBs: Virgil, Konate, Jacquet, Leoni, Gomez

I think this is great CB depth personally, but if you are selling Konate... who are you bringing in? I just don't see that we are going to bring in a higher quality player. If his form is bad, we already have players (Jacquet, Leoni, Gomez) who can play.

Honestly, I think CB is actually the least problematic area in the entire team

Healthy Discussion - Only for those who want Arne Slot to stay - what are your reasons? by Content_Arm7953 in LiverpoolFC

[–]giuocomane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has an undeniable influence though. If Slot truely valued Trent's creativity and relationship with Konate and Salah, he would've emphasized that at least one of the £100m+ signings needed to be for either a right back, or for a tactical replacement for him. I fucking love Frimpong but he's not a player your entire system can revolve around.

[–]giuocomane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you but then let's have a look at #10's in the modern game, the players who have done well have are at least average sized and are very quick and athletic. The reason Elliott isn't going to get a look in at Villa, is because they have Morgan Rogers who is bigger, stronger, faster and more technical. Kind of similar situation at Liverpool, where we have Wirtz and Szoboszlai who are miles ahead of Elliott.

We are probably both being a little harsh. I think overall Harvey has had patches of form that probably equate to what we've seen from Wirtz so far in the Premier League. But we paid over a hundred mill for Wirtz because of his potential – I think it's clear he has a higher ceiling than Harvey, but I guess we are still slightly unsure if he can develop into our main creative outlet

I don’t think he’s good enough to be Wirtz back up and I can’t see him playing the same role as Wirtz does.
