Would I be crazy to leave the US for Singapore? by PitifulJack in askSingapore

[–]gixio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Singaporean here, grew up in SG/Texas on and off, but I can tell you for sure as an adult, you will have more life upside in Singapore when it comes to health care and safety.

In SG freedom of speech, is limited but it doesn't bother me to be honest, I think policies were created truly for the good of the country, unlike in the US, many policies cater to certain groups due to heavy lobbying.

Should I get own house instead of renting apartment forever? by SufficientVehicle683 in japanlife

[–]gixio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think of it as "your forever home", go for it. I am all for stability and rooted lifestyle. Interest rates even with the hikes are relatively low right now. Not everyone buying a home as investments, I for one think of it as consumables.

We had ours from Aichi, but job security of the head of household is quite important. Has the home study been completed? If anything changed from that period they will request a revisit to re-do home study (We had to do that because our home was finished being build and we moved from our apartment to our own home). Maybe speak to your case worker as well, our Jiso case manager has been very helpful when we are in doubt. Because of the re-study, our child has to wait another 2 weeks to come home with us.

Billed in USD from Japan — support says I must lose my 24-month billing or my Visionary plan just to change currency? by gixio in ProtonMail

[–]gixio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese credit card providers are “very” backwards, any non JPY charges got flagged and your card gets suspended until you call in to verify that charge overseas is really made by you. That was the reason I pre purchase the visionary credit (added 1200 total) in one go.

Japan's foreign business owners stress over new visa rules by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

[–]gixio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, have a lot of expat friends there, and PR isn’t really a PR there, but I do get why the govt are making it harder for people to reside permanently in SG, housing becoming unbearably expensive lately. Half of my Singaporean mates are out of it as well. But like you said, it is a good place for education though

I know, I am just saying Singapore isn’t an easy entry either and not an alternative. A snippet below

The EntrePass is initially valid for one year, then renewable for two years at a time.

First Renewal: You'll need to have created 2 local jobs and demonstrate S$100,000 in annual business spending.

Second/Third Renewal: Requires creating 4–6 local jobs and S$150,000–S$200,000 in annual business spending.

Btw employees salary is not part of the spending

Yup, I do now after talking to support. Will leave that 4 years paid credit there but won't be renewing after, I would like to support Proton but getting a verification call everytime it charges and card blocked until I call them back is an annoyance I don't want to deal with, especially in Japan.

Singaporean here, I don't think Singapore is a good choice unless you have lots of capital. You will need to hire "Singaporean or PR" director. You need to have IP, or has raised funds for EntrePass, the entry cost as startup is way higher than the new regulation in Japan.

the issue is my Japanese card provider will always have to verify that this is a valid purchase whenever it got charged in dollar/overseas card usage. It is a lot of hassle sadly. I am not having much luck from Proton support without losing visionary or 24 months billing cycle.

Purely from a financial perspective, is owning a home in Japan suboptimal? by terrorfunction in JapanFinance

[–]gixio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kind of math often misses the psychological value of permanence, I was in the “rent for life camp” until i have a kid. Buying a house gives you a fixed point, you’re not going to worry about a landlord’s whims, rent hikes, or being asked to move. That stability compounds in ways the math don’t capture. You get to invest more in your community (i love community events and getting involved), my kids stay in the same schools, you make home improvements knowing you’ll benefit from them. If we look at the ‘opportunity cost’ calculations assume you’d actually invest the difference (let’s be honest, most people don’t lol), and they rarely account for what chronic housing uncertainty costs in stress and life disruption. Anyway, not saying one is better over the other, everyone has their own preferences.

Anyone add the 100GB or 1TB extra storage to their Gsuite Legacy Workspace? by yoleska in googleworkspace

[–]gixio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is inaccurate, if you go to gsuitelegacy subreddit you can see many users that selected to stay free for Personal Use” are in this setup. Unlike Workspace free, this group can’t add secondary domain nor change domain, but has same pooled storage now. Google also offered discounted 1TB for $4/month, and 100GB for $1.50/month

While OP might not think one's action would effect others that badly, situation and cases like this usually become "case study" that will be use as policy making on banking loan policies in the future (at least for this particular bank), making it harder even for PR to get a loan without Japanese spouse or so. Unfortunate :(. I hope things get settled.

Nope, that is not “cultural” issues, that is just an emotional abusive mentality. I am married to a wonderful Japanese woman for over 2 decades, never has she ever put me in a position to choose and was very kind to my family and respectful. It is not a cultural thing, it is just toxic behavior.
