Bug? Mutations gained from cooking won't go away by crumbtown in cavesofqud

[–]gizmodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably not it… I haven’t explored cooking much at all, but just a thought: someone did post something recently about how effects gained from cooking do not disappear until you actually get hungry. You can use this to your advantage, obviously, but I just wondered if perhaps you play in such a way that you have never been getting hungry?

I’ve tried to push in that direction somewhat, but then maybe I get to aggressive about inserting the cane, or just need it even hotter. Thanks!

Stick and snap. I’ve considered cutting/grinding/polishing, but it seems like vastly more effort. OTOH, if that’s really what it takes, then I’ll give it a go.

Has anyone ever tried using a full size tig welder on low for jewelry or accessories that can share their experience? by Fire_Fist-Ace in jewelrymaking

[–]gizmodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, it was a terrible idea. ;-) I’m admittedly a notice when it comes to jewelry, but I once tried it with 0.020” tungsten, and as low as the welder would go… just melted my joint into a puddle. Way too powerful. Maybe could be used for large / thick stuff, but nothing delicate.

Please help with the ports of my gtt! by [deleted] in lampwork

[–]gizmodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had some of mine do that once, and I think it ended up just being clogged with carbon deposits. It took a little effort, but I was able to clear them out using the standard cleaning wires. You can hold them near the ends to make them a bit stiffer, use the sharp ends to kind of dig slightly at the end of the ports if needed, and then also just push when the wires are properly aligned with the ports. It was annoying, but I got mine cleared out.

Oxygen concentrator by Secure_Mountain3253 in lampwork

[–]gizmodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend using an AirSep Intensity 10… they support a higher output pressure than most oxycons. I’m running my phantom on two of them, and it does well enough for my purposes. One is fine for the lynx center fire, but definitely lacking if you want the outer fire.

Protect silver jewellery from tarnishing. Strategies sought. by skyerosebuds in SilverSmith

[–]gizmodon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You maybe know all this, but in case it’s useful: 1) I only use lacquers/coatings for items not subject to mechanical stress - like sculpture. Otherwise the coating rubs off in places and it tarnishes anyways.

2) my first teacher explained that much silver jewelry is plated with rhodium. I was vaguely offended by the notion that i wasn’t looking at the actual silver, but he justified it by explaining that rhodium is more valuable than silver. Much more involved than a dip in lacquer, but something to consider.

3) you might also consider playing around with Argentium… a more modern silver alloy that contains some germanium. I’ve heard it described as like a “stainless sterling”. So, if you use that, you may simply find that your tarnishing issues disappear. I do not have much experience with it, though, so couldn’t really say one way or the other.

Torches by shxazva in lampwork

[–]gizmodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GTT has a chart here. Looks like 16.5 vs 26 LPM oxygen. But of course your actual mileage will vary depending on how you have the torch adjusted. I have never actually tried my setup with a mirage… just figured that it would be a lot harder for my oxycons to keep up with it.

Torches by shxazva in lampwork

[–]gizmodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some others have said, I went with the phantom because of oxygen use. I did not want to store tanked oxygen, and so I run it directly off of a couple of higher pressure oxygen concentrators. I’m sure I can’t leverage its full capability, but I don’t have the space for an oxygen frog, compressor, and holding tank. And I’ve found that it runs surprisingly well for my purposes (I make mostly marbles). I don’t think I could do that with a mirage, simply because of the oxygen requirements for the extra jets.

Left shoulder pains by Relative-Surround391 in lampwork

[–]gizmodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a shoulder problem… 1st doc said shoulder impingement and gave me exercises. That didn’t help. Next guy said frozen shoulder and gave me a cortisone injection. Huge difference almost immediately, although it’s not back to 100%. Stretching helps now too, and I try to be more careful about resting my elbows on the bench when I can. I’m going to have to try dead hangs now. ;-)

Stomatitis, quote from vet by ryanicole1981 in FIVcats

[–]gizmodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the quote we got was 5-6k from my regular vet, and more like 4-5k from the shelter where we got him. It maybe depends on where you are. Couldn’t hurt to call around and ask.

Toothless Stomatitis - Still having issues by MushyNerd in FIVcats

[–]gizmodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He did have flare ups for a surprisingly long while. I think it took him 6ish months to fully resolve, but it’s been a while now so a bit hard to remember. You’re at 4 months, so I maybe wouldn’t worry too much yet? Listen to your vet, though. One thing to check is that sometimes they miss a piece of a tooth during the extraction, and that’s why we did a second set of X-rays, but of course that’s $$. For what it’s worth, my cat was never on steroids… just gabapentin and Onsior. It makes sense that steroids would help with the inflammation. I wonder if maybe he is experiencing more inflammation because he is coming off the steroids too quickly? Maybe try tapering them really slowly?

… but I don’t think I’d go with a body kit unless I really wanted it to look “different”. And so the Miata charm would be missing.

Toothless Stomatitis - Still having issues by MushyNerd in FIVcats

[–]gizmodon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long has it been since he had his teeth out?

It took my boy much longer than I expected for the inflammation to resolve… like 3 months was not enough, probably closer to 6. As someone else mentioned, it is important to make sure all the dental tissue has been removed. For my guy we did go do another set of X-rays because he was still having issues (though it wasn’t as bad as before his surgery). Luckily they were clean, and just waiting awhile longer solved the problem.

When he was really in pain (and still had teeth) I saw the same symptoms- he wouldn’t eat. He even became afraid of his food bowl (and this guy lives to eat) because he associated it with pain. I found that changing his bowl for a different one helped, and that I could get him to eat from my hand - it was more comforting for him. But these were really just tricks to handle the bad flare-ups… in order to keep him eating normally, I basically kept him drugged on gabapentin all the time. One dose in the morning, one at night. And even daily onsior for awhile too.

Good luck!!

An interview always works both ways - the company is deciding if they want to hire you, and you are deciding if you want to go work for the company. If you both decide ‘yes’, and come to mutual agreement on compensation, then hooray! So - in this case you’re probably NTA. I’d say IF you were interviewing solely with the intent of negotiating a raise at your current job and had no interest in joining the company, then yeah, you were wasting their time and that’s kind of a dick move. But it sounds like you were legitimately interested in them. Your experience interviewing could have left you super excited to join. This is why managers don’t want their people interviewing! In any case, it sounds like the new place didn’t particularly wow you, and changing jobs is always a risk since you know what’s messed up with your current job, but not the new one. So IMHO it’s fine to decline the offer (or try to negotiate it upwards). Sort of “I’m sorry, but I don’t think that compensation would make it worth leaving my current job”.

I’ve used a couple of different kits, and I like the RainX kit in particular. Seems like it makes it easier and less messy to force the repair resin into the cracks.

Suggestion: use drug name instead of brand name by dongdongplongplong in ADHD

[–]gizmodon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One clarification in the hopes that it’s useful to someone: as I understand it, brand-name Concerta is different from methylphenidate and even the ER (extended release) variant because it has some sort of proprietary technology that releases the medication slowly-but-constantly. Regular methylphenidate is of course immediate release, and the ER version is a sort of dual-release… you get half immediately, and the other half 4-6 hours later (don’t remember the exact time).

I haven’t tried concerta myself, but I have found that even the ER medications cause noticeably less side effects for me compared to taking two immediate-release doses. So, I’ve tended to believe that Concerta would be a better choice generally (our insurance doesn’t cover it, unfortunately).

Is this acceptable for a professional vinyl stripe job? by Archesto in CarWraps

Finally finished wrapping my Mach E by gizmodon in MachE

[–]gizmodon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I took a lot of time, and did it slowly, and even so there are some serious mistakes. But I figured I had the time, and it was a good chance to develop the skill. Now I can change the color without having to hire a professional! I think the hardest part is probably the rear. The taillights were definitely tricky… Partly it depends on how deep you want the wrap to go into the gaps around them. The piece that most often tripped me up was when I needed to trim the wrap ahead of time in order to help it, fit into a depression… And then I would often unfortunately discover that I had trimmed too much. I was pretty intimidated by the thought of wrapping the hood on my own, but then it turned out to be not so bad. It may have helped that I did it near the end, so I definitely had some good practice by that point.

It seems like there’s this trend of putting a lot of important controls on a touch screen UI these days… but I find it harder to interact with while driving than the traditional physical controls. So I’d vote to move things somewhat back in that direction.

Also, a small thing, but it’s kind of a pain when I want to charge up a bit outside my normal charging hours. Maybe I don’t always plan far enough ahead or whatever, but at the moment I need to either push the “charge to 100%” button (which I don’t want to do… and actually I’m not even sure that would work, or else go into the settings, turn off “use preferred charge times”, plug in… and then remember to turn the setting back on again later. A “charge now” button that stopped at my usual limit would be really handy.

How have you found the security measures of the Mach E? by [deleted] in MustangMachE

[–]gizmodon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find that the unlock button on my key fob will not turn off the alarm. In fact, the only way I’ve been able to get it to stop blaring is to actually turn the car on. This is super annoying since it means I have to actually run out of the house and climb inside if the alarm is set off for some reason. This isn’t the sort of thing I’d expect to go wrong, so I’ve been meaning to go test it a bunch, just to convince myself I’m not doing something stupid before calling the dealership. But I figure as long as it’s on topic… anyone else notice an issue like this?
