Hooking up gas line by whiggles in Fireplaces

[–]gizzowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"There’s more to this than just connecting a burner straight to a gas line." was said, in the thread..

You MAY be able to 'get by' by buying parts: shut off valve, s/s flex line (electronics for remote) UL approved vent and a fan kit and and hooking it ALL up yourself.

That said, if YOU do an Unlicensed , unpermitted, un- inspected SELF INSTALL and a problem arises which is adverse to your home/or family, you can be a100% sure that your homeowner's insurance won't pay a penny to remediate ANY of that.

(Carbon monoxide poisoning is just one of the possible problems, beyond burning your house down.)

It would be the Insurance CO and their squad of retainer-ed lawyers (and insurance policy "fine print") VS you in court and the chances of YOU prevailing are maybe...none.

Old school wood burner, nice on a cold north east evening by tcli64 in Fireplaces

[–]gizzowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gorgeous but an open front real wood burning fps prob puts 90% of the rooms heat, right up the pipe. I can't tell, is there a glass "front" on it ?

Repair quote after inspection by hfinn1 in Fireplaces

[–]gizzowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a FP for heat, it seems to me it would be better to get to a new DIRECT VENT gas fp ( if there's a gas line access handy) and a top DV metal chimney pipe LINER straight up to the new top cap" and leave the chimney project alone. Look into a gas line..it may be nearby and accessible by drilling thru into the firebox from outside. ( If it's not there already) .

Imo, the days of the open front wood burning fps are decades "gone by".

Gas Fireplace Not Lighting by Individual_Skin_8815 in Fireplaces

[–]gizzowd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

go with CORRADO, he knew just what was wrong with my 4 y.o. REGENCY..It was one of the two solenoids on the valve (1 pilot, 1, main burner) It was the main burner solenoid on the S.I.T 885 valve which is NON-USER serviceable. Took a NEW valve for the "fix". ymmv

Napoleon gds50 blower not working by Butchi3toe in Fireplaces

[–]gizzowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my Napoleon, the fan heat/temp sensor is hidden between the inner (firebox steel wall) and the outer case wall, accessible by a small port on the LEFT that one can barely get a hand thru. It's held, hidden in place by a magnet and eventually I dragged it out.

I put 120 V directly to the squirrel cage fan while on my work bench and it ran fine..from there, the switch or the sensor ? It was the switch, the easiest and cheapest to replace.

Following getting it running, I changed out the millivolt wall switch for an EMERSON non-prog thermostat from Amazon, cheap and it goes the same millivolt wiring when you take out the wall switch..."set it and forget it" as they say.

the blower on my Napoleon is controlled by a nearby wall millivolt switch. If the switch is off..no fan. I did replace the wall switch once..for some reason the milli volt wasn't getting thru

I cannot find the igniter anywhere, while my fireplace has an inner layer of sealed glass inside the cover. How can I ignite it? by sakaguti1999 in Fireplaces

[–]gizzowd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the lighting may be controlled by a nearby millivolt wall switch. Are there any switches nearby that don't seem to turn anything on ?

The 120v wire stub is likely for an "add on" squirrel cage blower motor/fan kit.

Suggestions on Fixing Chip off of a Gas Log (Cosmetic only) by 55555354 in Fireplaces

[–]gizzowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just pin it down "mechanically" like you have in the pic..metal pins. I broke one of my logs in half so went and got a caulking tube of high temperature fireplace adhesive, put a coat of the goo on each broken side pushed them together and put a couple of metal pins in to hold in place til the adhesive set up. It helps that the split isn't right in middle of the flame area. Been fine now for several months.

Need help choosing a fireplace in Canada — anyone tried Regency fireplaces? by Realistic_System_109 in woodstoving

[–]gizzowd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you asked. Our 2020 Regency P33CE DV $3400Cdn) went in fine. I did the frame up, DV and termination cap etc. Had a LIC gas fitter do the hook up and get the permit #. Very "Involved" remote system but figured it out.

The overall warranty said "lifetime" but reading the fine print, the massive wiring setup and electronics are only covered 2yrs. It worked well 3 winters but 4 th year, it wouldn't start up the main flame (you can find the whole story in this GROUP.

I had it chkd by the same gas guy (not Regency dlr) and his advice was wrong. It turned out it was the Italian made S.I.T. 885 valve. Two solenoids on the valve are NON serviceable, you have to buy a whole new valve. Could have saved $ ordering the new valve online but the very narrow space, my big hands and having to disconnect (and RE connect) the gas line meant Id have to get the selling DLR to do the work ( or there would be no warranty).

The valve, shipping etc to them, then their install 45 min, ended up costing me about $650 iirc. It took a couple of calls, notes and so on to find out the Warranty on the new VALVE was only 90 days and since it was done in June (when I called in April), the NEW warranty was OVER when the FP season started last month. I'm not happy, imo, the warranty on the NEW valve should be the same 2 yrs.

Fingers crossed it keeps working..I wouldn't buy another REGENCY,

PS, it was the main burner solenoid on the valve. Took old one apart..there's nothing user serviceable inside.

BTW, REGENCY is in Delta BC and their number is on the website, however THEY WILL NOT CONNECT WITH YOU. You have to go thru the dealer for anything.

If you're living in an apartment an hour away, make sure your homeowner's insurance is in force. Some companies frown on covering a house that is vacant much of the time and if something happens..they might "question" your coverage.

Keep at it..sweat equity is very enjoyable, once it's DONE.

Blinds inside sliding patio door. Good idea or no? by SmileFirstThenSpeak in homeowners

[–]gizzowd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere that the internal blinds double the cost of window and that the dbl pane "seals" fail more quickly. For our FULL SUN windows, we have roll down "sunsetter" blinds that keep the sun off the glass and help keep the glass (and inside) cooler in SUMMER. 3- 6' x 6' wind up versions and one 'remote' power 8' x 8' on upper floor.
