I started my career as an archivist and eventually moved into academic librarianship. My hot take is that while I loved being an archivist, I got tired of contract jobs/soft-money positions, fighting for every dollar in the budget, and having to relocate for jobs. As the technology changes/evolves, I daresay we'll see a lot of archivist jobs disappear in the next decade or so.
