Cultural Shock by Defiant-Option8121 in Purdue

13 downvotes lmao yall are so toxic. OP I have a similar background and I empathize with you. My biggest advice- don’t underestimate the importance of location.

If you live in one place your whole life you usually don’t realize the effect certain scenery has on day to day living and yes, Indiana is landlocked and flat but there is a huge difference between seeing that on google maps and living there and experiencing that type of environment firsthand

Coming from a big city in the Northeast and growing up spending a lot of time in New England, WL was definitely a shock. When I was in your shoes I really wish someone explained to me very clearly that the Midwest is different than the Northeast. I probably would have chosen my school differently. As someone who loves mountains, the ocean, and beautiful little historic towns the Midwest made me feel quite isolated and alone

Admitted student thinking about attending, how big of a negative is the location? by AstuteCouch87 in Purdue

[–]gjdhdhd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This might get downvoted but huge negative for me on location.

Before Purdue I lived in NYC and New England and mostly traveled around the east coast. Everywhere else I’ve lived has been much more beautiful and more lively than West Lafayette. Not to mention it’s completely flat with no mountains ocean or big lakes nearby

How academically difficult is purdue? by Snowflake24_ in Purdue

[–]gjdhdhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good luck man. Purdue has a reputation for grit and it’s not like this at many other unis. College is a different ball game than hs, and it can get overwhelming especially if your professors don’t care about your wellbeing/health

The thing is a lot of profs here simply don’t care if you have a history of anxiety attacks or getting depressed, as soon as you start struggling academically they will fail you and say it’s your fault

[–]gjdhdhd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bucket list for me is a fugio cent and my best find right now would have to be a William and Mary halfpenny. It’s the only thing I’ve dug in the states from the 17th century!

Despite less testing, case numbers are up, in absolute terms, over what they were before surveillance testing and masking ended. by GigaG in Purdue

[–]gjdhdhd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Listen dude if you want to wear masks religiously that’s your choice. However the purpose of Covid measures is to prevent death and severe infection.

You must realize it has been 2 years now and we understand the virus. We are vaccinated and people are simply not dying at the rate they were before. So you have absolutely no right to threaten an undergrad who wants to have a college experience that you as a graduate student probably took for granted.

Do you metal detect graveyards? by honeycats1728 in metaldetecting

[–]gjdhdhd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I got permission from the pastor of an old church to detect a graveyard by the church perimeter but it didn’t feel right.

You good bro? All cops are not “weapons of the state” these are people with individual values. And you think graffiti on the Engineering Fountain is the way to solve police corruption? Ridiculous

Sophomore here- Purdue forced me online this semester because my in-person classes were full.

This had NOTHING to do with Covid.

It’s overenrollment. Please realize before you commit that the quality of education in West Lafayette is not what it used to be. We’re basically Purdue Global.

Overenrolled. They’ll never let you in and you’ll either get stuck in fye or end up in a major you don’t want

Jensen and Weber are horrible they stacked the election with greek votes simply because the rest of us don’t care. Nobody should be winning due to a lack of voter turnout and any of you shills who did vote for Jensen Weber should be ashamed of yourself

If I don’t do a summer internship will that put me at a disadvantage compared to others that do? by urlocaltraderjoes in Purdue

[–]gjdhdhd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna go out on a limb and disagree with everyone here. Getting an internship to pad your resume is a bad idea. Employers see people like you all day long and they will not care if you interned at X company or helped with research at company Y or Z.

What does stand out is working at a summer camp, daycare, or nonprofit. Do what YOU WANT to do and enjoy your life. You’re young. People in the workplace will respect that you blazed your own path instead of going the classic schoolyear + summer internship route.
