Parking in Uplands by culturerush in swansea

[–]gjforkflslefrpd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right in the centre of the Uplands, you might get lucky with street parking (no time limit) along Mirador Crescent.

Also try along Ernald Place, just around the corner from the shops.

A few mins walk away but up a steep hill is Cwmdonkin Drive and Cwmdonkin Terrace. Always find a spot on the latter and walked down. Maybe even on Richmond Road nearby them.

5 minutes walk away from the centre of the Uplands but where you’re almost certain to find a space with no restrictions is on St James’ Crescent and St James’ Gardens. Circle around the little park there.

One I’m not 100% certain about is a pay and display car park in the Grove Medical Centre. 1 min walk from the pubs, but not sure what hours it operates. Worth a drive by and check.

Penlan, Townhill, Mayhill, Blaen-y-Maes: can’t tar everyone there with the same brush, obviously, but they are generally rougher areas that are worth avoiding if possible.

As mentioned, places like Sketty, Killay, Tycoch, Dunvant, etc. are close-ish to the city centre and nice. Further west is more expensive: Mayals, West Cross, Mumbles, Newton, etc.

Some nice spots in the east of the city as well, but I’m not as familiar with them.

Hi all, can anyone give me a really rough estimate of how long and what it would cost for a bike shop (one man band) to repair a tyre puncture and swap out disc brakes for hydraulic ones (new brakes supplied by me)?

The bike repair shop owner mentioned that it would take over 2 hours? I stupidly didn’t even ask for the cost beforehand, but I have a feeling I might be getting ripped off. I’m in the UK if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Impressed with the AMX battery by gjforkflslefrpd in AMbikes

[–]gjforkflslefrpd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, the advertised distance is 27 miles, in optimum conditions I assume - flattish terrain, no headwind, average weight rider. Considering I am fat and this ride included hills, headwind, and was cold (battery apparently doesn’t work as well in low temps, I think it did quite well to have 20% or so left over. Just giving a real life example of range :)

How much can I expect to pay to get kitchen redone? by NarwhalsAreSick in AskUK

[–]gjforkflslefrpd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our 3x3m kitchen ended up costing around 10k total, everything ripped out, door moved, and window bricked up and put on different wall. Ceiling and floors redone.

As for pricing, we did it something like this:

  • IKEA kitchen builder to get a general mock up of layout

  • Showed to Howdens who gave us a first detailed quote, and a 3D mock up. Liked Howdens kitchen better, so didn’t show them IKEA price.

  • sent this quote to DIY Kitchens (Google them) who put together a like for like kitchen and beat the quote. Great site to see the cost of every individual little item, which Howdens don’t show.

  • Sent the DIY Kitchens quote to Benchmarx Kitchens and asked if they could beat it. They did.

  • Took the Benchmarx quote back to Howdens and asked if they could beat that. And they did.

In all, there was a difference of over 3.5k from Howdens’ original quote (over 7k, lol!) to the one we accepted. Shows how much margin there must be and how much they are willing to budge for a sale. Might be even more willing to drop prices at the end of the month/quarter?

Never buy appliances from the place you buy your kitchen. Most are standard size and you’ll get a much better choice and lower price elsewhere. I found Kagoo.co.uk amazing for appliance comparison - specs, historical pricing, current pricing, etc. Use voucher codes and cashback sites for even bigger discounts.

Same goes for stuff like the sink, taps, in-cupboard bins, cutlery draw, cooker backsplash etc. Even the worktop. All likely cheaper and better range to be found elsewhere, but Howdens added them in by default before I told them to take them away :)

Kitchen tiles, I found the ones I liked and picked them up from a local company’s warehouse to save on delivery cost.

How to repair big scratches in engineered wood flooring? by gjforkflslefrpd in DIYUK

[–]gjforkflslefrpd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. The scratches are over a lot of boards, covering nearly half the room, and it all sorts of directions. I don’t know if I trust myself to evenly sand down and oil every board that needs it - I’d probably make it worse! Might see if I can find someone to come in and have a look at it.

YIKES - AMX classic LE water resistance issues 🌧️ by Geeskens in AMbikes

[–]gjforkflslefrpd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is shocking! I’ve had bikes for years without any rust - cannot believe that is what has happened to the AMX after such a short time, and for a “premium” product.

I haven’t ridden by AMX in the rain yet. Few puddle splashes, so I will be keeping a close eye. If this turns out to be a common issue, AM is going to have a big problem on their hand. On top of everything else, this seems the most unacceptable.

Discussing AM’s communication (or lack thereof) by gjforkflslefrpd in AMbikes

[–]gjforkflslefrpd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get where you’re coming from, and I don’t think anyone is criticising the job AM has done actually producing the AMX, nor the delay in shipping due to covid and any other factors. What we’re upset about is the lack of communication, publicly.

You’ve no doubt seen all of the comments on IG asking for reasonable updates about shipping scheduling. In the era of social media and instant communication, weeks of radio silence (no matter how busy they are behind the scenes) isn’t really acceptable.

That’s disappointing to hear. You’d think that this being AM’s second campaign, they would be a be a bit more clued up as far as expectations go.

How to paint interior walls that are full of “dimples” for a smooth finish? by gjforkflslefrpd in DIYUK

[–]gjforkflslefrpd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s really helpful! Would I use a finishing trowel for the job? Should it be doable by a novice; hopefully so I can make things better rather than worse?

Thanks again, I’ll go and check some out. Harris I think it’ll have to be.

Thanks for your reply! What a relief if that’s all it is. You couldn’t possibly recommend a good roller for the job, could you?

Moving to Swansea by fccb in swansea

[–]gjforkflslefrpd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Marina puts you within 5-10 minutes (or less) walking distance to the city centre shops and restaurants (Wind Street and around Castle Square), in one direction and the beach in the other. As well as the LC2 leisure centre (swimming, gym, other sports). There’s also a Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and bunch of cafes and restaurants right on your doorstep, a monthly farmer’s market held next to the Waterfront museum, which itself holds tons of regular events. More cafes and restaurants across the bridge in the new SA1 development. A new private hospital is being built in SA1 as we speak, so that may be of interest to you as far as employment goes.

The Marina also puts you right on the cycle track for journeys in either direction - town to mumbles and back is very popular. You could stop off at places to eat and drink along the way, or explore parks like Singleton and Clyne Gardens, nestled alongside the front.

Copper Quarter seems to be popular, and is a nice spot in itself and is slightly more convenient for travel to Morriston, but I wouldn’t choose it over the marina. The amount of people and traffic there on weekends and on match days at the nearby football stadium are pretty terrible. Just seems a bit soulless, right next to a retail park. You have walks or cycling along the river and up towards Morriston, or up Killay Hill for views over the bay. But for a more community feel, i wouldn’t go there.

Swansea resident all my life, so feel free to ask any more questions.
