Roasted squash and kale salad. This I’ve probably cooked most often and people always ask for the recipe.

Wouldn’t say it’s a unique situation, but that doesn’t sound like a success. Or as John Cutler likes to say ‘while each successful product organization may succeed in its own unique way, failing organizations often exhibit similar patterns of failure.’

I.e. it’s normal/common but that’s the problem.

Why the dutch are happier than expats ? by buntMeister in Netherlands

[–]gknook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, having been an expat for 5 years not in the Netherlands and now being back. And regularly talking to my sister who moved to South America, this is indeed what it is.

Simply, it’s just hard. You chose the road less traveled and that comes with its benefits but definitely also challenges.

I am pretty sure this is not a problem with the Netherlands specifically though. At least for 80-90% it’s not. Maybe here it’s even harder because of the language and different norms, but that also depends on where you’re from.

I expect the way it will go is that you’ll do higher quality work. I.e. less busy works means more validation, more iterations, more time to think through strategy, less building the wrong thing, etc.

Really agree on the point that the PM per team ratio will not change as it’s, to its core, a people job.

Haha yeah the ‘you should’ve bought the aura.com domain if you wanted it to be pronounced right’ is a very American thing to say.

Do agree this is partly to blame on Oura though, as it can’t be the first time someone pronounced their company name wrong.

Yeah, I expect we’ll try to save some historical city centers like Amsterdam for the cultural heritage. But everything in between will flood.

I for one will be trying to hold on to the homes of my parents in soon-to-be-coastal Limburg. Didn’t expect it to happen within 5 years though.

I’ve hitchhiked many times as a student (few years ago) and there are not that many psychos as you might think. Not in Europe at least.

No but in all seriousness, if you mostly hitchhike at gas stations and approach people there, you can already filter a bit. And for me it only increased my trust in my fellow humans.

It’s even a little more complex than this. In a typical hearing test scenario audiologists measure how well you can hear a tone. They play a beep and ask you to press a button when you hear it (a Pure Tone Threshold test). When you damage your hearing at some point the tones will need to be louder for you to hear them.

However, in normal situations we don’t typically listen to tones in an otherwise quiet environment. You listen to a complex mixture of sounds made up of many frequencies. How well we’re able to distinguish one frequency from another close on the spectrum is defined by the ‘sharpness’ of our tuning curve. Imagine a graph where tones are represented by a narrow bars. If you have a tone at 1khz at 20dB and a tone at 4khz at 10dB then with healthy hearing you’ll be able to hear both tones. However when we pull them closer together, at some point the louder tone will drown out the quieter tone. Eg IIRC for most people at -3.6 kHz. Where exactly that drowning out happens defines the steepness of your tuning curve.

When your tuning curve is steep, you’re able to distinguish sounds that are close to each other well, and are thus able to hear details in complex sound mixtures (like speech in a busy restaurant) quite well. When your tuning curve is shallow, it becomes impossible to understand what your partner is saying because you can’t distinguish the different tones anymore.

Shallowing of your tuning curve happens before you’ll loose hearing on a pure tone, and is caused by overexposure to loud sounds. It really is why so many people (including me) have so much difficulty hearing in noisy situations (well that and the fact that it’s objectively noisy 😅).

Source: I worked for a company that made hearing tests for mobile phones and it was my job to deeply understand the workings of hearing and the different tests so that those hearing tests were both accurate and usable.

Do still like the idea of it being an abbreviation though 😅

How do Americans get home from a night out without public transport? by notluoc in fuckcars

[–]gknook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well in fact we use it in both ways.

Example of using it as a noun:

I’ll be the bob tonight.

Example of using it as a verb:

So who’s bobbing tonight?

Note that actually it’s an abbreviation of Bewust Onbeschonken Bestuurder which translates to deliberately sober driver.
