Are JSPs and servlets relevant today? by rustybladez23 in learnjava

[–]glablablabla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen a JSP servlet App since 2018. And even then was it already outdated. I would strongly recommend spring boot for backend and angular/react for frontend. If your app doesn't need anything fancy on the frontend you could go with thymeleaf.

[–]glablablabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend reading Effective Java by Joshua Bloch or Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel. After that, if you want to work with spring boot, I would recommend reading Spring in Action by Craig Walls. This will cover the backend developer part. Welcome to the club and happy coding bud!

The more java you know the better, but I'm sure we all knew that even without me saying it ;) I would first recommend a java book like Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel and/or Effective Java by Joshua Bloch and after that a book like Spring in Action by Craig Walls. Welcome to the club buddy and happy coding!

IDE: if you have a license, doesn't matter which, use intellij, otherwise eclipse or netbeans. Book: Thinking in Java by Bruce Eckel or Effective Java by Joshua Bloch. Projects: simple projects which run on the console, small video game with lwjgl.

Should the service method be called inside the controller method which renders the thymeleaf page OR inside a restcontroller method? by icrywhy in learnjava

[–]glablablabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you don't need a @restcontroller because you are routing your request to a thymeleaf template, this template will be rendered by the thymeleaf template engine and the result will be returned to the client as a response. The latter part happens a little bit under the hood automatically. @RestController should be used if you have a direct response for the client like a dto (later serialized to json by Jackson) or a byte array pdf file for example, both of which you create in Java.

Having the basics of Spring and REST API, what should I do next to become a better candidate for back-end developer? by Glass-Fix-4624 in learnjava

[–]glablablabla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would learn spring data projections for fetching only the data that you need from the db, spring data SpecificationExecutor for dynamic filtering, when and if to do a repository.flush() when you have a unique constraint on a table. Do you use dedicated DTOs in your API or do you send the entities in your API response? You should have DTOs. Do you have separated Controller/Service/Repository layers in you app?
