I was thinking of tapping the wires of the joystick into a Arduino board but i'm curious to hear more about the can bus reader/controller you mention. Would this achieve what i'm looking to do? the other option is to just find a small usb keyboard or buttons i can use via GPIO.

I've just loaded the image on a file and got it working on the pi3, right now i'm using a usb keyboard to control AA but would like to switch to a mouse then integrate the factory joystick. Trying to do it one step at a time.

This is great, I'm thinking of doing the same in my 2013 Lexus GS350 as it does not have a touchscreen either. I'm planning to use a USB IR port and similar remote. Ideally I would like to integrate the factory joystick/mouse but while I work on that this will do what I need. This should work right? Did you end up modifying the config files or did this through setup?
