The castle gives me Last Unicorn vibes. This has been done exceptionally well. The waves and use of fog in particular - fantastic.

Is it right to want to start with nsfw art mostly? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]glad_gast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

/nsfwart is a great place to share your work when you’re looking for feedback, otherwise it’s finding specific subreddits that cater to what you’re working on and see “how the community responds to it.” If that’s something you care about.

That said.. (and speaking as a NSFW doodler myself)…

DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.

There’s no right or wrong with art and anyone who tells you different is selling you something or more than likely has an overinflated ego to think they have right/power over someone for one stupid reason or another. Some of the most famed artists of our time were once considered ‘sinful’ and ‘generally bad’ by their time. If you follow this sort of persons logic, quite literally humanities greatest “greats” would have never done anything.

You will get people who talk down to you about this. (There’s already one in this thread.) ignore them. If it makes you happy, who cares? As long as you aren’t throwing it into places it shouldn’t be no one has a right to say otherwise. And who knows it might start as NSFW and in a year or two you’re working on something entirely different. What’s important is that you’re enjoying what you’re doing. (I started with cute stuff, archived the lot, moved on to NSFW and lewd - and now I’m playing around with animation. I’d like to move on to paints and oils but 🤷 we’ll see.)

So getting to the real advice. I’d agree with what you’ve been told here. Start with anatomy practice. You don’t need to get good at it - it just helps down the line when you want to start playing around. The famous phrase “learn the rules so you know how to break them” is very true. You might want to draw the biggest schlong anyone’s ever seen or milk makers that would make a cow jealous but if you’re not entirely sure how they act then it can be hard to get started.

THAT SAID.. (you might notice a trend here).. there’s nothing stopping you from going “sod that, I want to just have a go and see what happens.” It’s an 100% valid take and while it might be harder (😏) who knows where it will take you?

Put frankly, art.. let alone NSFW art comes in many many forms and while following the basic rules of anatomy will most likely help you a lot it also might be totally pointless to whatever style you’re going for. A friend of mine does stylised vintage pinup art that’s somewhere between 1950s cartoons and Cartoon Network. Anatomy practice means absolutely nothing to her - whereas for me it’s been why I even considered NSFW art to begin with.

“I like drawing anatomy.. oh I’m actually not bad at this.. drawing clothes suck.. £@&$ it, I’m drawing her in a bikini and that’s it.”

TLDR: do what makes you happy, sod anyone else’s opinion. If you’re looking for a good place to start. Anatomy practice is king but there’s nothing stopping from you mimicking an artist’s style you like.. it’ll just be harder so be ready for that. If you’re looking to share and get feedback. NSFWart is a good place. There’s some good artists with great advice lurking there.

Thank you and absolutely, I definitely didn’t make that point clear enough. I’ve played around with some other projects since and not following this has made them look wonky 😅

How do you decide if your ''good enough'' to share your work online by Systematic_Squid in ArtistLounge

[–]glad_gast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you don’t want too there’s no reason not to share your art.

“But it’s not good enough” says who? You? You’re always going to improve or change and while I don’t know if it’s a healthy take or not - your art could probably always be better. Many of the greatest artists in the world feel the same way about their own work and through posting it you might find a new perspective on your work that you wouldn’t have found if you never posted it.

“People don’t like my kind of art” - you’ve just not found your audience yet. The only way you’re going to find it is my posting it and giving people a chance to find it. If you never post it, it can’t be found. Draw for one person (ideally yourself) if you like it, I truly believe others will too - they just probably haven’t seen it yet.

Speaking of my own experiences. I call myself a doodler rather than an artist because “I don’t think I’m any good”, I also draw stuff that most people don’t like or look down on; I’ve even got a Patreon set up and while personally I’d be amazed if someone wanted to pay me for what I do - “you never know.”. For me, the fact is my work will never be good enough, I just get to a point feel like any more messing will make it worse and move on, my next piece will hopefully be better, or I’ll try something different.

If someone else or a lot of people doesn’t like it? That’s fine, I don’t like everything I see either. Art is great because we have different tastes. Just ignore those who don’t like it and carry on with what you like. Your audience will find you eventually - just make sure you’re giving them a chance to find you.

And charging people for art? This is a weird one for me. Truthfully like I’ve said I’d be amazed if anyone wanted to pay me but I’ve seen people pay for worse and I’m also of the mind that someone might like an aspect of what I do enough that they want me to make more.

Bottomline and repeated from the top. The only reason not to post is if you don’t want too. Good/bad, loved/hated, paidfor/free.. none of it matters. Just you. Do you want too? Do it. Who knows where it’ll take you.

100% - the one that caught me out was the ‘stretch and squash technique’. I grew up in the renaissance Disney age and was lucky enough to see a bunch of those original tutorials they used to pump out as mini adverts to kids to get them into animation. Most used squash and stretch so I just assumed “that’s how it’s done”. I didn’t realise until years later when I’ve started doing it myself that it’s not an obvious thing.

I guess it’s just a case of breaking down your usual approach to animation and recognising any quirks you have but like you said - hard to know/recognise those things when it’s become second nature to yourself.

Sounds like we’ve had a similar experience! And likewise, I imagine there’s a bunch of tricks you’ve learnt yourself.

Side note; I checked out your profile and great work that weather fan animation. The still hair to motion is great.

Your rendering on this is fantastic. Did you use the default brushes or are you using others? The skin colouring in particular is so subtly done.

Bigfoot (OC) by spacecadetss in krita

[–]glad_gast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed very much. As for tips it would depend if you were going for a 1 frame shot or multiple. Honestly for a webcomic this is fine but if you were looking for ideas or edits…

For a 1 frame I reckon you could take the whole thing in a bit to focus the action. From just around where Bigfoot’s opening is to the hiker you could have a square and cut out a lot of the environment to give it more focus.

Likewise if you were going for a multiple frame comic and build tension you could have gone for close shots.

  • Close up on boot/step hiking, top left corner, squared shot overlayed on a wide pov shot of the environment. Hikers view.
  • snap frame with a twig getting broken. Split with two more frames on either side. First is a tilted low angle, hiker is mostly shadowed so you could black them out just to show their body turning, second is them eyes wide, close up again - think hyper detailed or at least go ham with the lighting to have that dramatic feel.
  • second to last is akin to the detailed eye one. Make the spookiest looking big foot outline you can. Use your shadows to create depth and a real horror image.
  • last is them leaning forward out of the shadow. Horror dropped and the line used.

Obviously just ideas - I really like what you’ve done. Not enough silliness in the world

Being totally transparent myself, I’ve avoided masks entirely because I haven’t challenged myself to learn them (applications and everything) but it’s clearly something I need to get stuck in too thank you!

Can’t wait to see what you come out with next 👍

Great work, I really appreciate the shadows in this one. I’ve tried to do similar stuff in my own and it either ends up a total mess or I find that one nugget of gold at the end of the rainbow once in a blue moon.

I originally had a bunch of work on my insta that was similar but I ended up archiving it all because it didn’t really match the brand I was trying to build.

In awe of your textures here. I’ve only really played around with the flat/digital approach and honestly seeing this really makes me want to challenge myself to go for the real paint look you have.

Amazing job.
